The Warhorn - Devlog #7

Dear adventurers!
We are pleased to announce that with every update, released in regular timelines, we are
adding new mechanics and features to the experimental version of The Warhorn, that is
running on Unreal Engine 5. In the last few updates there have been multiple features added
to The Warhorn. Remember that this is just the beginning, as our roadmap contains many more changes that you will see in the nearest future. As in the last update we have added the mechanic of first mini game – Capture The Flag - we will organize several events that will be using it, testing also other network features, strictly connected with multiplayer mechanisms.

How we stopped worrying and learned to love the sticks

In Unreal Engine 5 player gear progression will have more layers than in UE4 (default
version) Warhorn - as you can see, in one of the first updates we have introduced tier 0 or
so-called ‘caveman gear’.

Stone & stick tools are easy to make, cheap and don’t break too easily, but damage-wise
they will be the worst choice of weapons in the game. As a result, every tool after this first
step will be much sturdier. After crafting your first set of tools you should look for some
metals. And speaking of metals...

The Copper Age

Copper tools and weapons will be the foundation of early game gathering and combat. Also,
you will not be forced to settle down before crafting your first set of tools.

No, you wouldn't be able to smelt every ore in the game without settling down, but there will
be no need to sacrifice too much if you want to explore and find your perfect spot. You will be
able to craft copper tools, go to a good place to build a base and start gathering resources.

Introducing…pig

In the last published roadmap we have promised that deer will be the first introduced animal,
but due to the need of redesigning some aspects of The Warhorn’s hunting mechanics and
ranged combat we finally decided that you will see pigs at a much earlier stage.

As you remember, in UE4 pigs were one of basic huntable animals and this will not change
in the new version of the game, but hunting will be much easier and more immersive. Yeah,
this chonker will be easy to catch but getting better animal based materials will require a
more serious hunting..

Early map expansion and building mechanics

In the default version of The Warhorn you will soon see large chunks added to the map at
the north-west and south-east. We are preparing building spaces and realizing the first
phase of expansion of the green biome. Before implementation of the next biome we want to
polish, expand and refine the main highland area. Previous map from UE4 version had one,
most important problem - it was big enough, but a large part of features was stretched
around various corners and hard to reach.

In the experimental (UE5) version, the map will be open for exploration like in default
Warhorn (UE4) but in new version we have a new philosophy - ‘quality over quantity’. There
will be no filler plains, never-ending roads or other features typical for too large open worlds.

Social Media growth and diversification

We are also happy to announce that our community is constantly growing – our social
medias are now more active, so if you want to see new materials created actually in The
Warhorn, so as be up to date with news (not only about updates, but also events, sales and
giveways), there are more ways to achieve it. As The Warhorn had it official channels on
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, we have started adding regular videos on our Tiktok and
created our official subreddit. You can also join our Discord, where you can ask our dev team
directly about in-game features. All social medias channels are being fulfilled with materials
and discussions about the game – check and join r/TheWarhornGame

The Warhorn - Critical crash fix

Hello everyone,
We come today with good news for a large part of the players, a new version of the game has just been released, which includes an important fix. It fixes a critical bug that caused the game crash after a few seconds/minutes of gameplay, making it impossible to play completely.

This problem has affected many people who have Intel processors of the 10th generation and newer.
Recently, we have received more and more reports of this problem, and the specifications of players' computers were similar, which helped us a lot in finding the cause and fixing the issue.

If you are interested in the exact cause and solution of this problem, then please visit the intel's official website, where everything is well described.

We want to thank everyone very much for their help and support, and at the same time apologize to those affected.

The Warhorn - Devlog #6

Hello adventurers!
This time we have prepared more details about the roadmap and patch notes for the experimental version. Below you will read about what we plan to add in the coming months, as well as where you can find information about newest patch notes.

Roadmap - Experimental Version

Development of the experimental version looks very good, every day we develop more and more things. The inventory and crafting systems have already been implemented, in the coming weeks we will add the system for using tools and extracting resources. The version is becoming more playable and you will soon be able to enjoy it. We work hard to make the game better so we introduce many modifications that will improve and enhance the gameplay.
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/660920/view/3405311447044190135
Below you can take a look at the roadmap for the next 6 months.

January - February

  • Inventory System
  • Crafting System
  • Chest system
  • Using tools
  • Resource extraction
  • New creatures: Pig, Entling
  • Swimming and crouch system
  • In-game messages
  • Sound effects and music

March - April

  • Building system - Functional buildings
  • Map system
  • Torch system
  • New creature: Deer
  • Creature loot and spawn system

May - June

  • Armor system
  • Building system - Custom buildings
  • New creatures: Wolf and Clay Warrior

These 6 months are very important and crucial for us, because this roadmap contains most of the mechanics that are the main core of the game. Once they are implemented, the development of the game will enter a higher level and adding new things will be much faster and easier.

Patch notes

In the last month, updates to the experimental version have been released regularly several times a week, this way we want to make sure that all the changes we make to the game code do not cause any problems. This way we are able to catch the critical bugs or even the smallest ones very quickly.

We use our own build system, which automates the entire build and deployment process, so you get updates with every change we make. Patch notes usually contain one to several entries, but they are released very frequently, almost daily.

In the coming days, the list of changes will also be made available on the public Discord channel (patch-notes), so you will be kept informed of what changes are being made in the experimental version. Additionally for those who are not members of the discord server, every three weeks we will publish an announcement on steam, which will contain a summary of the latest updates.

The Warhorn - Devlog #5

Multiplayer and stability in experimental version

After the stress test from 5 November and another round of internal network tests we
needed to fix some stuff and now we have good resultats-basic foundations of UE5 multiplayer are working as intended. No desync problems, random lags or weird crashes.

Also we have potentially fixed some niche problems with some hardware and software
configurations so UE5 will be more stable than UE4.

Return of the Bag

In the UE5 version the inventory system is partially rewritten from a technical standpoint and
we are getting much better results. Overall, the inventory system will run smoothly and be
slightly less janky.

New standard for the largest stack will be 120 units in one inventory slot and the smallest
one will be possibly somewhere around 15-30. Tools and weapons will not be stackable but
overall they will last longer than in the UE4 version so going to dunegons with more than 3
swords will be a thing of the past.

Cold iron shall be the master of you all..

In UE5 we are overhauling the entire crafting system so magic can appear later in
development. The Warhorn needed some changes to stay fresh and some old systems were
requiring extra attention.

Firstly, early in the UE5 lifecycle we will introduce cooper and stone as resources for crafting
tools. This step was hotly debated inside our team but after one month of analysis we
decided that iron will no longer be the first and only tier of tools. Yeah, this means that you
will get iron tools slightly later.

But don’t worry, this change does not mean that you will dig copper with tools made of mud
and later dig iron with something that breaks if your character sneezes in the wrong
direction. Tools in future updates will be more durable and resource gathering will be more
satisfying.

On Early Access

As you understand The Warhorn is still in early access and we're working on future updates.
Experimental version usually gets updated more than two times in a week and with every
week we are moving forward with production of graphic assets, code and animations.

Updates of UE5 version are small and numerous so we are not writing path notes for every
bug or code fix. It would mean that you would get community post every 2-4 days or even
every day.

Unreal Engine 4 version was getting larger updates to the main branch and smaller updates
to the developer branch, it’s normal thing in game development. Visible updates were often
sum of smaller ones-we are not informing about the gap between x.x.47 and x.x.49 because
you are only interested in changes between x.1.x and x.2.x.

Overall change to update frequency doesn't mean that we ,,do less stuff”. We only
decreased amount of patch notes that we are publishing on steam. This will soon change,
and we will start sharing regular patch notes from the experimental version.

Message from Krawiec (Game designer)

Hi, today I want to touch on one specific topic-difference between planned content from
devlogs and things that I currently have on the drawing board or project documentation.

Firstly, on devlogs we are often informing the community about incoming work-in-progress
features. If you see a model, animation or element of terrain this often means that we are
working on it. If something is on concept art-we are planning to soon start work on it or we
are currently working on this asset.

Second category is stuff from internal project documentation (such as GDD) or designer’s
drawing board. Currently in my spare time I'm working on game design and mechanics of
undead biome, polearms, two handed weapons and capybara mount.
This doesn't mean that we can or should talk about or promise those features. Yes, we can
do that and actions like this could increase the amount of copies sold but really…it would
end someday and unethical business practices often lead to downfall.

If you need technical support or have any questions about Warhorn’s development you can
always ask on our discord server. https://discord.gg/SbsRXMM

Play the experimental version now!

Hello adventurers!
We are pleased to announce that the experimental version is now available in the steam beta system!
You can play the new version if you have The Warhorn game on your account. Feel free to play and try the game on the new Unreal Engine 5. Let us know your impressions of the beta version of the game.

Before you play

Remember that the experimental version is still work in progress, doesn’t have many of the main mechanics - the mechanics in the experimental version have been heavily reduced. The visual part of the game is also not the final result - it has many bugs and glitches, which are constantly corrected and optimized. If you get stuck somewhere, use /spawn command in the chat (Y key) to teleport to the starting village.

Why is there a new version?

We want you to see with us how The Warhorn world is created and how it changes for the better with your help. The experimental version aims to improve the quality of the game, optimize it and provide even more enjoyment. With the experimental version, the developers receive feedback from players at an early stage of development, so we are able to improve or fix the current mechanics faster and easier.
We are open to your suggestions and ideas, so if you would like to share one, please visit our discord or steam discussions.

Read more about experimental version in the previous news!

How to play a beta version

If you have The Warhorn game on your account you can switch between release version and beta version. To do this go to your Steam Library and find The Warhorn game in the list, then go to properties.

In the Betas tab you can select the version you want to play, None - means the official release version (you can always switch back). If you want to try a new version, choose experimental - UE5 version.

When you select a new version, steam will download the version automatically.

The Warhorn - experimental version is coming!

After many weeks of work, unhealthy amounts of energy drinks and serious exposure to UE5
we can now announce the Experimental Version of UE5 update.

Experimental Version will be stripped from most of Warhorn’s game mechanics-everything is
work in progress and we are working on the re-implantation of core mechanics but the first
alpha test will be focused on network code and graphic optimization.

New engine, new challenges

Games in early access can be janky, poorly optimized or even not work at all. Well, even
some AAA games can crash at specific conditions…so we decided that giving a possibility to
test graphical settings and other aspects of experimental build to players would be a good
idea.

Yes, you don’t need to wait for the full beta release to check if the UE5 version will work on
your PC!

Multiplayer not from day one..but before day one

Experimental version even without a large chunk will have a multiplayer gamemode. In
future all quests, locations and other adventures will be avabile in fully supported
multiplayer-coop and PVP.

Network code will receive further improvments, so in the UE5 version you will be able to just
call your squad, open a can of soda and have a good Friday evening with The Warhorn.

Network test

With the release of the Experimental version we will start a new event-open multiplayer test
for everyone interested in supporting Warhorn’s development. We need your help to optimize
network code and provide lag-free experience in future updates.

FAQ

1.Will the new UE5 version replace the current Warhorn?
No, Experimental UE5 version will be a beta branch and updating to UE5 will require
manually changing to the beta branch via steam.

In the future after the release of the UE5 upgrade Unreal Engine 4 version (current one) of
the Warhorn will be available as a beta branch. We are not taking a game that you bought
from you and if you will prefer an old Warhorn-you will be able to return to the old version.

2.Who can participate in an open multiplayer test?
Open multiplayer test….well, everyone with a legally purchased copy of Warhorn and
working internet connection. We don’t require a ,,tester” rank in our discord server for this
test.

3.When UE5 will receive full implenentation of gameplay mechanics?
Experimental version should be considered a benchmark for the UE5 version and game
mechanics are currently revised, reimagined, fixed or reworked. Most basic (such as
inventory) ones will return soon.

The Warhorn in UE4 version had a problem with source code that had some elements
backing to first builds from…2018. Yes, some scripts were 4 years old and others…were
somewhat creepy.

Example-UE4 version has a strange script that reduces damage in PvP, nobody knows when
it was written and where it comes from and how it works. Another one is a short code without
connection to other parts of the game and The Warhorn brutally crashes without it..

As you understand, we really need to revisit some elements of the Warhorn source code and
remove weird (or possibly extraterrestrial in origin…) scripts. It will be much shorter than
starting from scrap but we need some time.

4.Upgrade to UE5 will be a paid DLC?
No, you paid for The Warhorn once and supported us with your wallet. We are not planning
to charge you for an update.

Also to get access to the experimental branch you will need to manually change to beta
version via steam-UE5 version will not appear as dlc.

5.Wait….UE5 version has a new map?
Yes, with the UE5 upgrade we are implementing a new map with new content. Most of the
game mechanics will also be revamped.

Old map was big but…had a lot of problems with implantation and optimization. Map from
the experimental build is planned as a small part of a much larger world that will run
smoother and will be larger than the old map.
