Those Who Remain

Those Who Remain Devblog - Edward

Hello everyone!

Hope you are keeping well and looking after yourselves!

The Those Who Remain launch is just around the corner, and we thought we'd give you all a little bit of an insight into the town of Dormont, the characters within, and a little behind the scenes information to get you ready for your trip into the darkness.

The main character of Those Who Remain is Edward Turner, and whilst we don't initially know much about him - we quickly come to the realisation that whilst he may be an ordinary man, he is definitely not of the standard hero mould.

When we are first introduced to Edward, he is home alone, slouched over a desk and suffering from a depressive episode brought on by his life choices up til that point.
On the one side we see a picture of him and his wife, on the other, a loaded gun - and a bottle that is way emptier than it has any right to be.

We quickly learn that he has been unfaithful to his wife, repeatedly. To the point he has a full blown affair going on the side with a woman known only to us as Diane, and find him musing the choice between taking a quick way out of responsibility via a bullet, or confronting his mistress and attempting to undo the harm that his choices have brought into his life.

Edward is not a perfect guy. Far from being the classic hero of video-games, he has his flaws and his inner demons, we made him this way to feel more believable.

Luckily for us Edward decides to arrange a meeting with Diane at a local motel, with the intent of breaking the whole thing off and claiming some control back over his conscience and rebuild his life - and it is at the start of this journey, that our story begins.

When the game starts, even as things begin to get strange he's not particularly interested in anything or overly shocked by his experiences.
Far from a display of bravado or confidence, Edward feels almost like it's deserved - withdrawn into his own mind and 'going with the flow' despite the mounting horror and responsibility on his shoulders.

Edwards past and whether a sin or action can ever be truly redeemed in the eyes of those that it harmed is a recurring touchpoint on both Edwards story and the tragedy in Dormont that he finds himself embroiled in.

We all have our flaws, we're all human - and we can all relate to someone who makes human if not entirely morally correct choices in the face of situations that are not entirely black and white.

Over the course of the game the player will learn about Edwards decisions and actions in the past, as they seek the same information around the other characters of Dormont, giving context and potentially salvation in the eyes of the player for his life path.

Even though this game is far from a 'Noir' type investigation - Edward was heavily inspired by noir characters: he’s conflicted, flawed, disillusioned and with a past.
This comes through in his dialogue, his reasoning and interactions with others, and his constant will to move forward and see things through despite the albatross around his own neck - and the conflicting judgement calls between his own actions - brought out brilliantly by the voice actor (Joe Bianco)

As a bonus small piece of trivia: the character reference that we gave to the American voice actor (Joe Bianco) who plays Edward, was Detective Hartigan from Sin City!

We hope you enjoy getting to know Edward, and try not to be too hard on him on May 28th!

Those Who Remain Release Date Update

Hello everyone

There have been a couple of changes brought about in light of the current pandemic situation and we wanted to keep you all informed.

The COVID-19 pandemic is an extraordinary situation. As a team our primary concerns are with our players, team members, developers, and our friends in retail around the world, in what is a challenging time for everyone involved.

As a result of these challenges, Those Who Remain will now launch later in June 2020 both digitally on PC, in addition to our PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launch. This will enable us to ensure the game is able to be released to all territories on time without disappointment.

We appreciate that for many people this will be disappointing, and want to emphasise that we have not made this decision lightly - we are eager to get you onto the streets of Dormont as soon as possible!

We'll continue to communicate any updates and changes as they develop.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Our Discord Doors are open!

Those Who Remain has a Discord - and you're invited!

Hello there everybody!

We are back from PAX East and refreshed and absolutely enthralled with all the enthusiasm we've seen since people got hands on with the game! That being said, we do have a couple of small updates for you.

Rezzed

First of all, with the organisers decision to postpone EGX Rezzed at the end of the month, we will unfortunately be unable to attend and give the UK audience a chance to see the game.

Whilst we share the disappointment of the organisers and general gaming community in this, we stand by their decision as the right thing to do given the circumstances, and instead will point you towards our Publishers Twitch page for any pre-release events, coverage and developer talks in the run up to launch!

Wired Productions Twitch

Discord

Secondly, we have our own Discord, and its doors have been opened to the public!

Click here to get an invite and meet other horror fans!

Whether you want to keep up to date with the game, get in touch with the developers,
or simply chill out and talk shop about horror games and share spooks with other like-minded gamers - this is the place to be!

We are getting awfully close to launch time, and will have plenty of exciting pre-release coverage and updates lined up for you along the way!

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us so far!

And stay in the light....

Release date!

Those Who Remain started with a very simple premise. We wanted to create a game where we could play around with lights and darkness; where the player would die if he stepped into the dark. It all started with this simple idea.

It sounded great on paper, but when we built a prototype to test the mechanics... it just didn't work. Light gets gradually dark, so it's impossible to visually explain to the player where it's safe and where it's dangerous.
So we scrapped the original plan, but kept working on the same idea, a game where darkness would be dangerous.

But we added so much more: dimensional portals; moral choices; different endings;
and the game grew and grew and three years later, here we are now, announcing with great excitement that the game will release on May 15th.

So, very soon you'll be able to play as Edward and visit the accursed Dormont and find out what the hell is going on with that place.
Why is Edward in Dormont? Why is everything dark? What are these strange portals?
Too many questions, but if you get what it takes to get to the end, you'll get the answers.

It's been a lot of work, and it wouldn't have been possible to have the game as it is today without the help of our great partners: Wired Productions and Whisper Games.

The countdown starts - we hope to see you in Dormont.

Sending our love from PAX East!

Those Who Remain @ PAX East

That's right.
As the light at the end of the tunnel (AKA release) approaches, so does the time to show to the public what we've been up to for the last 3 years.

We couldn't be more excited about it - we're going to PAX East, and we're bringing all the dark shadows from Dormont with us.

We'll be at our publisher's booth, so all you need to do is search for some strange immaterial darkness in the show, we'll be there.
You can also listen to the dark whispers and follow the voices, they'll take you to us.

Or you can just search for the Wired Productions' booth, that'll work too.

And last but not least - are you following the game on Twitter?
It's easy to find:
