Treachery in Beatdown City

Nominate Treachery in Beatdown City for Labor of Love - Steam Awards 2023!

Hey y'all,

Shawn here. As you probably know, we launched Treachery in Beatdown City straight into the pandemic! This was after 8 years of development post working at Rockstar Games, and it was 2 of us working on it "full time". Over the course of development we had family members die, gained and lost funding, and picked up new jobs just to keep going.

Everyone who played Treachery in Beatdown City in 2020 made our struggles worth it, and everyone who is still playing it now is amazing. I hope everyone who has Treachery in Beatdown City has been enjoying the Ultra Remix update! Over the last 3 years we tried to figure out how to best bring y'all the new update, and even though we missed a few launch dates, it was for the best!

Much of what we added was quality of life improvements, like rumble, updated in game art, more music, and better labeling, on top of Ultra Remix adding double the content, with over 80 new enemies, a few more weapons, some new costumes, a bunch more music, several new stages, etc. etc.

We grew our team a bit to finish off the game, and for many folks this was their first game credit. Everyone who has worked on Treachery in Beatdown City would be honored if you'd nominate us for Labor of Love.

Peace,
-Shawn

Minor Update, but fixes some nagging and potentially BIG bugs.

Thanks everyone for reporting your issues! We've double and triple checked, so we hope they have been addressed in this patch.

Cloud saves are fixed. We believe there was a conflict with when they were initially set up, and the current update that added achievements. Steam achievements require a different setup than previously accounted for, since we're counting how many counters/knife defeats/items you've used/etc. Bouncing between platforms should not be an issue.

Quick saves are fixed, and no one should lose their save anymore. This was *usually* caused by a confluence of issues. Still somewhat related to steam achievements.

BTW, saves are in Documents/TreacheryinBeatdownCity. You can back it up by copying/renaming it.

Runners/Cyclists not dying when going to 0 HP with quick strikes should also be fixed. There was an issue that was VERY specific to Brad where defeating a runner with quick strikes wouldn't put them in their full "death" animation. We checked it before, and hadn't seen it in a long, long time, but then it came back. So this seemed to slip through the cracks.

Sorry for any issues this caused, and if you have any issues with your saves, or what have you, please hit us up in the Discord! The Steam forums are of course ok, as well, but the Discord is just easier.

2.0 Patch - BIGGER, BETTER, MORE BEAT ‘EM UPPER

Hey y’all,

The new Patch is LIVE. This patch officially rolls the game into 2.0 territory. We also dropped trading cards in the game, so you can start collecting and getting your badge crafting on!

Now, we have SO MANY patch notes, but I wanted to drop my fav of the bunch. You can find all of them below the following list.

Also, there's a Mac build now. For all you Mac heads, please give it a whirl and let us know what you think! We only have one Mac for testing, and it's a Mac Mini, which we tested on extensively, so hopefully it's all good.

Now, our top 10 patch notes!

1. In MOST fights, when the player loses, they will be able to continue as another player.
Previously you only had the option to Restart (from the fights beginning) or quit, and reset the fight. Now, you can use any available heroes to tag in. This is a huge feature we intended in the game from the start, but we couldn’t quite figure it out all those years ago, and we had a game to ship.
Now,

2. Hitting objects (news paper holders, garbage cans, benches) via the menu will count toward COMBO counter, giving you bonus FP.

This might not seem exciting, but this makes your first moments in a fight much more meaningful. We were once asked, why should I not break open the garbage can/mailbox/bench/etc. first, and this answers that question. Some well placed hits at the beginning of a fight can be invaluable.

3. Lisa and Brad now have moves that add “Grapple Up” to improve Grapple ability. This will make it so enemies will counter less. Also, as an aside, CT Punk's counter has been nerfed tremendously. Doesn't mean he won't EVER counter, but you're a lot safer grappling him now.

4. Weapons are reworked - Weapons were too powerful previously, which kinda broke the game, and limited how we could use them. They now have health, and will die after a certain number of uses/drops, which allows us to add them to more fights.

This might seem like a bummer, but to be honest, it was a bummer to us how broken the weapons were, so we stopped putting them in fights. Now we were encouraged to add them back in.

5. New map songs added to Maps 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 and 1-5.
I’m not sure why, but we only had one map song for maps 1-1 - 1-5. I mean, I like the song,
Now, we have 4 extra songs, and I love each of them dearly. Honestly, a highlight that makes going back through the game even better!

Here's one of the new tracks, for 1-2

6. Force Feedback has been added. I love rumble, vibration, or whatever you call it, and
it’s built into the zoom of the game. My only issue is the Steam Deck doesn’t have the
best vibration.

7. Map music continues when you return from a fight! Again, another mundane seeming update, but the map tracks are short, but often interrupted by battle. This will allow you to hear all the map music in full.

8. Fixed an engine physics bug that caused hits to occasionally drop and miss
players/enemies with no feedback. This one was STUPID, and very unclear how we were going to fix it. But, a new programmer took some time and found out what it was.

9. Cutscene art has been updated. I was sick of some of this art. Ugly John was the very first enemy I made, and his hair ... well, whatever his hair was doing was not good. So he's got better hair, and now yellow teeth.

Left, old. Right, new!

Top, new.
Bottom, old.

10. Context sensitive prompts on map 1-1. These will help guide new folks from the game, but are also unintrusive - they don't pause the game, they just give you some helpful info.

Now, the rest of the notes! Let us know what you're most hyped for!

Fights

  • In MOST fights, when the player loses, they will be able to continue as another player.
  • Weapons are reworked - Weapons were too powerful previously, which kinda broke the game, and limited how we could use them. They now have health, and will die after a certain number of uses/drops, which allows us to add them to more fights.
  • Added the chain whip weapon into the game
  • Hitting objects (news paper holders, garbage cans, benches) via the menu will count toward COMBO counter, giving you bonus FP
  • Hitting multiple enemies + objects at a time multiplies your COMBO count - So hit 2 enemies + 1 trash can (aka 3 things) 3 times = 9 hits = MORE FP!
  • Fight progression feels faster
  • Counter Attacks, Finishers, and specific strikes/grapples will now leave enemies on the ground longer to allow you to regroup, and improve your strategy
  • Fixed a few soft locks in combat stemming from counters
  • Fixed an engine physics bug that caused hits to occasionally drop and miss players/enemies with no feedback
  • Lisa and Brad now have moves that add “Grapple Up” to improve Grapple ability
  • Certain enemies have been tweaked to counter less
  • There are new tutorials added for Grapples, Back Grapples, REVENGE attacks, and the Tenshin move
  • COMBO mode now has a text label to show you that you started a COMBO
  • BURN, SHOCK, and FREEZE show proper status labels
  • New opening tutorial
  • Mercedez’s battle sprite has a new face
  • Generally improved Zoom/Screen shake
  • Cyclists and joggers have larger hit boxes, making them more annoying/threatening
  • Added more context prompts to the attack menu to let players know why they can’t do a thing at any given time
  • Added context sensitive prompts to Map 1-1
  • New CRIT indicators: Regular CRIT attacks now show up as orange, while double + CRIT attacks show up as red.

Controls/Options

  • Force Feedback has been added (It is off by default on old saves, so make sure to turn it on!)
  • Ability to turn on/off Force Feedback has been added
  • Improved controller support (controllers generally feel better)
  • Vsync option added - Please turn OFF Vsync if you can’t run the game at 60FPS because of monitor limitations or the game will run at half speed (like if your card can’t output 60FPS at 4K)
  • Improved resolution support
  • Options menu is clearer
  • Build number added to the lower left corner of Options menu

Maps

  • New map songs added to Maps 1-2, 1-3, 1-4 and 1-5
  • Holding a direction will cause the player to keep walking (previously the player would snap to each node)
  • Map music continues when you return from a fight
  • Jitter from map camera scrolling has been eliminated

Cutscenes/NPCs

  • Several enemy/ally cutscene images have been enhanced - Abbey, Ugly John, Farooq’s among others
  • Bruce’s cutscene images have been enhanced - He’s got waves, y’all
  • You can advance text quicker by pressing the D (keyboard)/B (controller)
  • Text is sharper
  • Text boxes for enemies, item boxes, and tutorial boxes are all the same size

Misc:

  • All new title screen logo

And, I think that's it! See y'all next week for the Ultra Remix drop!

We Got a Release Date, Y'all

Hey, what’s up everyone,

First off, wanted to say THANK YOU for your patience. Getting this game out has been an immense amount of work. Case in point, in the last few weeks you may have seen our latest trailer on the MIX or elsewhere, and it unfortunately had a release date that we had to push back. We swore we had it locked, but game development often has other factors that don’t have anything to do with the game proper that can hold it up!

But we are FINALLY LOCKED IN. October 4th, 2023. That is when the Ultra Remix DLC will be made available, and, if you own the game, you will gain access to it for FREE. It would still be super excellent if you threw a wishlist our way anyway. (and maybe tell some friends?) The DLC will be priced at $9.99 for anyone who picks up the game after the initial release.

However, you will also see a patch update soon. That is to make sure the game is ready for the update. With it you will see a SLEW of updates in the patch notes. These will affect anyone with the game right now (in a good way!) We will also be looking at getting MAC support ready and out the door.

When the patch goes live, I'll be back with another Steam update. Also, we have a funky free bit of content coming out to EVERYONE that will be hitting in October as well... If you were at PAX West, you got a taste of it.

Some last things before we go - I'm updating the achievements, so you may start seeing the icons go live. There's a bunch of achievements you'll be able to get once this patch goes live.

Most of our achievements have a music reference, so here's a playlist of songs that are directly referenced and/or are just good songs to fight to.

And again, if you could throw a wishlist our way, it let's the algo know they like us !

Thanks again !

Some news on the Ultra Remix update!

Peace to all the fans of Beatdown City, current, past and future!

As you probably know, we unfortunately had to push back the Ultra Remix update. This wasn't done lightly as there were a bunch of reasons why we had to. Mostly exciting, some mundane. As we’ve mentioned before, the update is DOUBLE the size of the original game and most of the dev work has happened in the last year (vs. the many more years for the base game.)

The Ultra Remix update is so big, I consider it Treachery in Beatdown City 2.0. And still everyone who owns the game on PC/Switch is getting that update for free as a thank you for rocking with us these last few years.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2288590/Treachery_in_Beatdown_City_Ultra_Remix/

This will also be the first time that Xbox and Mac (native) fans will get the game. We’re hoping to announce the other console maker, but can’t yet, for… reasons.

We’re currently polishing everything up, and we will announce a new date when we are in/through Xbox/Switch console cert. It shouldn’t be much longer now, but I don’t want to announce another date that needs pushing again.

There’s so much stuff coming (including a dope new trailer, with a REMIXED track), but for now, here’s 6-ish dope things to look forward to:

Gameplay Updates

1. NEW DEFENSIVE MOVES

Based on feedback and our own wants, we're including new Defense moves including Rolls and Parries.

  • Rolls give you a way to avoid frontal attacks completely and counter attack!

  • Parries give you a way to reduce damage, while building REVENGE meter faster

2. NEW ATTACKS!

  • Including On the Ground attacks.
These are exciting ways to end fights quicker.

  • Oh and some cool attacks like this that really change the whole game!

3. NEW ENEMY TYPES!

Enemies will be showing up with lots of new attack types. Like this spinning lariat attack.

4. NEW MUSIC!

We've got a ton of new music coming.
We're even adding new music to old levels. Here’s a new track for map 1-2.
We used to have one song for all 5 maps. Now we have a song for each!

5. TUTORIALS!

With the update adding so much, we realized we needed to add some tutorials. And while we were at it, we started adding new tutorials for the early parts of the game as well.
It's not the coolest thing to show but TRUST US it's worth it.
Do YOU know how Bruce's Hidden Techniques work? Most don't!

6. QUALITY OF LIFE!

We've worked on making the whole game feel/present better.
We can’t really SHOW you how much better the game feels, but here’s one thing we can show - Attack/AUTO COMBO Previews
Instead of telling you what’s in an AUTO COMBO you can see it!

That’s just a tiny fraction of what’s coming up.

If you can add the Ultra Remix DLC to your Steam wishlist that would rule - https://bit.ly/ultrabeatdown - it helps the robot overlords know that people like us.

Thanks for reading, and if you want to keep up to date - we’re getting more active in the Discord. https://discord.gg/tibc and on the unfortunate trash fire that is twitter https://twitter.com/beatdown_City/. Between the 2, we’re going to be doing some giveaways that you won’t want to miss!

Otherwise our next *BIG* update will be when we have a release date for Ultra Remix!

Get ready for the Ultra Remix update!

Hello, residents of Beatdown City!

Earlier this week at the New York Game Awards, we announced that Treachery in Beatdown City Ultra Remix, our huge new DLC update, will be released for FREE on April 27th to existing owners on PC and Nintendo Switch.

Check out the new trailer

You can hear me talking about our journey to make this update at the New York Games Awards here.

The update is significant and will add three times the amount of content, with six to eight hours of new gameplay. This includes, but is not limited to, ~eight new maps, >80 new enemies from rich tourists and hipster cyclists to musical mascots and even the ninja terrorists (FINALLY), all new attack moves (on the ground attacks+more!) and defense gameplay mechanics (rolls, anyone?), and lots more new music (for old maps, too!) and no more cliffhangers(?!).

All of these changes are being added because of your passionate feedback and suggestions. Thank you for playing and believing in us as a team, we hope you love the new update when it is released in just a few months!

Thanks for rocking with us,
Shawn & the NuChallenger Team

If you can throw a wishlist toward the DLC - it's over here - https://bit.ly/ultrabeatdown it helps the algorithm know that people like us.

The Good, The Bad, And a Silver Lining

Hello, residents of Beatdown City!

As y'all know, we've been working on our update for a minute and this year we were convinced it would be out in 2022. Sadly, that's just not in the cards.

BUT.

This update ended up being much bigger than we ever anticipated. We’re not going to put a number on exactly how much bigger just yet, but what we can say right now is we had to expand the team (by a bunch), we had to massively upscale what we were building (by a bunch) and it’s added so much extra to the game that we’re truly surprised by it (again, by a bunch). In short, besides adding a bunch of stuff, the whole game is getting an update which is very cool. And we're confident that we're almost done.

We know this comes as a disappointment, and for that we do apologize, but the end result is going to be truly enormous and we're excited to share it with you.

More on it soon.

Thanks for rocking with us,
Shawn & the NuChallenger Team

5 new languages! 50% off! + Some news on future updates!

Hey y’all,

I know it’s been a long time, but we’ve been working away on getting this important update out (and future updates!)

TL;DR

  • 5 new languages
  • Refined options screen
  • Fixed some bugs
  • Worked on Resolution options

This latest update for Treachery in Beatdown City brings 5 extra languages. Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, and Russian.

So why the long time? Localizing the 16,000 word script took some time, but also took some review on our end. In general, it was an in depth process that took us longer to take care of than we expected. Adding languages meant we had to update our UI and we actually had to update our saving system to make sure the changes would stick when you’d pick your language (and say, didn't save your choice.)

You’ll notice the options menu is a little slicker, we reorganized it to make it easier to navigate.

We also did some extra tweaking to fix some bugs, like one fight (the REVENGE fight on the 3rd map in particular) which had some issues, and we had to redesign the fight to avoid a freeze.

We also dove in and worked to improve the resolution options, and that was a little tricky. But I can confirm, at least 4K now works reliably.

Now what’s up with future updates? We’re working on the huge update, and that’s basically all I can say. More story, more enemies, more music, more of everything. I don’t want to over promise, but trust us, there will be some cool stuff in store.

We are also working on achievements, and trading cards - will be getting some new art for those.

Also you’ll get to fight Dave Lang (of Iron Galaxy) so that should excite some people out there.
