Under a Desert Sun

Keeping everyone posted!

Hi everyone,

I wanted to make sure everyone knows I am not dead and development is ongoing. As some of you already know our(Defne and me) Marriage is coming up soon. Did you know marriage is a pretty big project? I sure do now ;)

After the “love” project I will continue to finish up the flight alpha so people can try it as well as other improvements I promised.

To finish up here are the gifs in chronological order on the flight progress:
Flight mechanics with a very unfinished plane model:

Correct model, no animations yet:

Fully animated:

Under a Desert Sun Alpha 0.631 - NO REALLY THIS TIME!

Hi Everyone,

So yeah this took a while ;)

This update is the same as the last one minus the crash bug in unity. So:

New stuff:
- New Muzzleflashes for all weapons
- Many objects now make a sound when they collide, just listen to those bullet shells dropping..cling..clung..clong..
- Small bugfixes on weapons
- Updated the starting area
- Update of the unity engine
- You can now exit the game via the menu

Next up. Flight. I am thinking about releasing a map where you can simply test the flight mechanics. There won't be much else to do then fly since I've not gotten near ready to implement flying enemies yet. Just wondering if people would like to test this in an early state.

Kind regards,
Ray

[Reverted :( ] Under a Desert Sun - A0.631

--- Unfortunatly I have had to revert this update. There currently is a bug in the unity engine causing the game to randomly crash. This is a known bug and the people at unity are working on it, so no worries. Really sorry people, but in the mean time I'll keep working on the bigger update. As soon as the fix arrives I'll rebuild this update and push it out! ---

Under a Desert Sun Alpha 0.631

Hi Everyone and happy new year!
This update is small in content but it carries many of the mechanics for flight that will be in the later bigger update.

New stuff:
- New Muzzleflashes for all weapons
- Small bugfixes on weapons
- Updated the starting area
- Update of the unity engine

The larger update where you'll be able to fly a plane is underway but will take some more time. If you're interested in the progress please look at the steampage(updates).

Kind regards,
Ray

Under a Desert Sun - Flight progress 2

As you can see I've added more to the flight model part of UDS. The model now animates more realistically when you fly the airplane. Ailerons and Elevators move according to stick behaviour

Furthermore I've worked on some optimisation(See image above). I plan on making the flight maps fairly large. This means that you run into some interesting problems concerning memory as well as floating point accuracy. I've mostly solved this now by using a smart system to turn on/off parts of the map. Furthermore I've tried to created a moving origin system to avoid any objects to be more than 5000 units away from 0,0,0. This avoids objects starting to shake because you lose float accuracy.

For those of you who's brains just totally turned off when reading that last bit. Trust me when I say I've made sure things stay smooth and FPS stay high during flight. Here's one more pretty picture that always makes me happy!

I'll keep everyone posted on the progress and hope you like it!

Ray

Under a Desert Sun - Flight Progress!

Hi everyone!

As you can see in the gif above I've been making progress on the flight mechanics. There's also a more realistic airplane showing some realistic behaviour the prop engine.

Next steps will be to further optimise this. For example the flaps etc don't move accordingly yet. I also still have to work on world loading. Flying over a much larger map comes with it's own hurdles if you want to keep descent fps in VR.

I hope you all like the progress. If you have any ideas that would be cool let me know!

Kind regards,
Ray

Under a desert sun A0.7 - Flight!

See that!? Thats me flying a really awefull airplane model through one of the maps..but it's flying, controlled by a vivewand. And the basics work!

This is still far from being demo/playable. But one of the bigger things I'd like to add for alpha 0.7 is flight and flight combat. You didn't think I started out with an airbase map for nothing did you?

Hope everyone likes the slow but sure progress. I'll post again soon when i've got a more clean flight setup ready.

Kind regards,
Ray

Under a Desert Sun A0.63 - menu update!

I've made changes so that left handed people have an easier time to play. You can now set with which controller you would like to move. This applies for teleport movement as well as trackpad movement.

Furthermore you can set on which side of your body you prefer to have ammo. Both are needed to be able to play well with either main hand.

I also added some highlighting on the bolts of weapons that need to be bolted before you can shoot. This way you get an indication when your hand is close enough to grab on.

Lastly I removed the experimental grabbing options.

Hope it helps,
Kind regards,
Ray

Power to the lefties!

Small thing I am working on is making the game more configurable. For example.

Currently you cannot change the hand with which you control movement. Meaning that if you teleport or trackpad move, you always have to use the same vivewand. In future updates I'll add some extra menu options where you can configure such things. This way you can set up what way you'd like to play.

Other things I'll add are, configurable main ammo left/right etc and turning on/off graphics options. You get the drift.

Kind regards,
Ray

Send in the bugs!

Hey there,

I'd like to get some more feedback on usage and bugs. SO if you found any please do post them here in the comments.

For example, I noticed that there maybe a bug where machine guns don't always keep firing since the last update. I would like to make sure that this is actually happening and that it's not my controller being faulty ;)

Hope to hear from people!

Kind regards,
Ray

Slow Burn

Hi everyone,

So, the summer months are coming and these will be a bit more busy for me in my daytime job and other commitments. Like last year I expect to bring out less updates during this time.

I thought I'd post this ahead of time to avoid people thinking my project is dead or something. I am and will stay fully committed.

I will keep building small improvements like the bloodsplatter I released a few weeks ago. But the bigger things will have to wait a bit. For example the next big update alpha 0.7, I expect to start this somewhere end of september.

Kind regards,
Ray
