Under a Desert Sun a0.602 - Bloodsplatter!

A small but fun update. I've added bloodspatter to the camera. In the older builds you would only see a red fading screen. So I think this is allot better!

Have fun and I'd love to hear what people think.

Kind regards,
Ray

Under a Desert Sun A0.601 - new animations!

I've taken the time to revamp the animation system a bit. This allows me to add new animations and more animation variaty. As of now you'll notice zombies having a bit more animations. Especially the creepers in survive waves behave quite differently.

Kind regards,
Raymond

Release UDS Alpha 0.6

Under a Desert Sun: Alpha 0.6!

And we're here! It took a while but i've finally been able to deliver on the promise of adding allot of cool stuff including a first look at the singleplayer puzzlemap and realistic reloading.

It's been a long road(1,5 years and counting people!) but I hope everyone enjoys the progress that has been made since the first release. UDS has gone from a weird wave shooter where you had one gun and one enemy type to a game with quite a few more guns, enemy types and now it's first signs of a singleplayer element. I'm proud of the progress and happy that people are still along for the ride.

This update contains:
- Alpha version of single-player map. Walk towards the pyramid
try some puzzles (and give some feedback!),
- Realistic reload mechanics, you can now bolt bullets, in fact you have to,
- Numerous performance improvements

for more details on what has been released see the trelloboard: https://trello.com/b/CEDvwMAb/under-a-desert-sun

Thanks for being along for the ride, and as always, check the tutorial table if you're new.

Kind regards,
Ray

A5.99 Realistic reloading and performance improvements

Hi there,

This update is a final push pefore the a0.6 release. In this small release I've added quite a big change. Namely that some of the larger weapons now have more compled reloading behaviour.

Gun changes:
The following weapons have changed:
- Thompson
- MP40
- STG44
- BAR

If you're not sure which ones those are, you'll notice once you can't shoot without bolting the first bullet ;) So I do recommend you try them before you enter a map.

With this new behaviour I am trying to keep true to the early acces promise of realistic weapon behaviour. I plan on refining this further in the coming updates. All comments are welcome to improve realism.

With some VR games I have noticed that not everyone is happy with more complex reloading mechanics. I am curious to know wether people would like an "easy mode". If so, please do leave a comment.

Performance
I've made numerous performance improvements. These should be quite noticable in the framerate. I'm very curious to hear if the increase in performance is as high as on my rig. This seems to differ per machine so please do tell me your experience!

As always, if this is your first time please try the tutorial at the gun table!

Kind regards,
Ray

Upcoming stuff

Hi!

I figured i'd write a small update before people think I'm dead or something.
Currently I am still working on cleaning up the puzzle level. This is the last big thing I promised for Alpha 0.6. And yeah..it's taking more time then I thought.

Also, i've been experimenting with more realistic reloading methods. So, the upcoming update will also allow you to bolt bullets in the chamber of guns before they allow you to shoot. The one exception in this are the handguns, i've chosen to keep those simple as the slider of these guns ends in the far back position when they are out of bullets by default. I did not feel it added anything if you'd have to touch the slider before it shoots back in this case.

I've noticed with other games that having complete bolt action on guns is a bit of a debate thing. I'd love to hear what people think and if you would like an "easy" mode for guns that keeps reloading as it is now.

Kind regards,
Ray

Small fixes update a0.59

Hi everyone,

I've just uploaded a small update with some polish and fixes. In particular you'll notice that during the " endure" waves at the end of the wave the creepy skeletons will all fade out. Before they just dissappeared and this just looked weird and unfinished.

Furthermore I noticed that shooting at certain spaces (for example the sky) would cause guns not to fire/show muzzle flashes etc..This has been fixed as well.

Kind regards,
Ray

Alpha 0.595 - new controls and tutorial fix

Hi there,
A review and forum post had me concerned so I checked out the tutorial text and controls. Dave had a very good point when he mentioned that many players might get confused by the tutorial.

I've improved the following:
- I've added the trigger button as a valid "pick things up" button
for items in the world and your inventory. This is something most
VR games use. Grab will still be the only "drop things in the world" button.
Also, grabbing arrows from your back will also still be only grab.

- I also changed the text of the tutorial to make things a bit easier.
A more fleshed out and better tutorial will take a bit more time.
I hope that in the meantime this improvement helps!

- Lastly I'll did a quick sweep of the maps adjusting the player rig height so you won't get locked out of picking up objects because of the floors.

I do believe these changes will already make a big difference and I hope it improves the enjoyment of the game.

Small note: There are still two experimental grabbing options in the menu(Touch grab and touchpad grab). I plan on removing these in the future unless there are active players using them. So please let me know in the forums if you use them!!!

Bowfix implemented in a0.59

Hi everyone,

I just pushed a small fix that makes the bow usable again in game. The bug made arrows bounce off enemies doing zero damage. That ofcourse makes it a bit hard fighting of the hordes of creeps the game sends at you.

With this fix, the bow, the most powerfull but also slowest weapon in the game is back!

Kind regards,
Ray

Alpha 0.59 - new enemies and more!

Hi there,
This update contains allot of new things under the hood as well as some things everyone will immediately notice. Under the hood i've done allot of bugfixing and adjusting.

New things:
- I've added a new wave type for both the mummy maps(Not the airfield one) here you will now have a special wave with fast enemies every 3 rounds.
- I've added new enemies and i've made sure that all mummy enemies have more diversity visually
- I've added post processing effects that make fire, gunfire, bright objects and such look better.
- --Furthermore antialiasing makes the overal image
a bit smoother.

Bugfixes
I hope that many will find that the guns behave more stable and that many bugs related to the guns have been resolved. Some major issues that should not occur anymore are:
- You can no longer accidentilly get items stuck to your hand
- You can no longer hold two guns in the same hand
- You no longer have problems with walking when shooting certain weapons.
- Grabbing items should no longer be troublesome in some specific situations

Other fixed bugs
- Some hand and arm animations were wrong. This is now fixed.
- The waves would not always properly set difficulty. This is now fixed, you can expect the waves To become somewhat harder over time.

As always, if you're new please go to the table and read the tutorial!
Kind regards,
Ray!
