Afterthought Games Is Closing!

This Halloween has claimed another victim, Afterthought Games. Yes, we are closing down forever. That means this is your last chance to buy Cornflower Corbin, or Unreal Estate before they are out of stores for good.

Valve has re-assured us that those whom have purchased the games and those that purchase the games before our studio closes will continue to be able to install and play them into the future. There are no worries there. We are sad that our income, personal lives, and financials make it not financially viable to keep running. We love making games and love it that many people have been entertained by them.

This all started as a dream, and we achieved so much with your support. Thank you for all the good times and experiences. Pick up the games this Halloween before they are gone forever, Rest in Peace Afterthought Games, it's been fun.

Unreal Estate Update 1.0.17

We've been hard at work on our bigger title for a while now, and I changed jobs a few months ago, so that has been an undertaking, but we wanted to get a little something out for the Summer Sale coming up. So we did a quick pass on some animation updates. The change is subtle but we think it makes the game look a little nicer. We have no plans for more updates at this time, but we randomly think of things from time to time, so who knows.

As for the studio we are working a larger title now. It's going to be a rts/rpg like game. We don't want to talk too much about it, but we are excited. Hopefully we'll have more news about this in the coming months. We are also slowly but surely upgrading the animations in our side scrolling shooter Cornflower Corbin. That one is more of a passion project, so when the coding and designing isn't hot for our new title, drawing up some fun shark and whale animations is what Larry is doing. Overall it's been a really busy year so far and it doesn't look like it's going to slow down any time soon. Thanks for hanging in with us.

Unreal Estate Update 1.0.16

We've spent the last 10 months or so working out that we are not going to do one of the projects we had on our plate. After that we started to spin up another one. It's going to be a big game, probably bigger than a 2-man studio should take on, but we are excited to work on it. Plus, we made the switch from Monogame to SDL. Much more to come on that project later. In the meantime, we are taking a little bit of time each month to come back to our games we already released to put a little something into them if we can.

We have also spent more time than we would like to, telling people that we are not the Afterthought LLC that made The Isle. I get why people are making the mistake, but we feel bad not responding to people that are looking for that company. So, if you need something regarding that game, it isn't us.

This iteration for Unreal Estate upgraded the version of Monogame we had used to clear up a bug that we had no control over. The game should now exit properly and not keep playing the music after you exit. We also tried to listen to our feature requests and though I don't think everything being asked is in the cards, one thing we were able to do was to put in a stat window. You'll see that on the main page now. We've been tracking stats the whole time, just hadn't done anything with them, so you will see that populate right away when you launch the game.

Hopefully in the next few months we will have an update on our new project, so stay tuned and thanks for hanging in with this little studio.

Cornflower Corbin - Getting Full Hand Drawn Animation Art Pass

We are putting some time into Cornflower Corbin and updating the art for all the sea creatures. We feel that it will take on a better life and look that matches the fun game-play if we hand animate all the sea life that Corbin is fighting through to save the day.

The one complaint we have received about the game has been the look and feel. So we made the decision to slowly update it to what we think will make it fantastic. What we are doing is hand drawing framed animations for all creatures in the game. This means we are learning to hand animate while doing this.

This is a entertaining undertaking as we have never done this before. We are used to using something like Spriter Pro to do something like a paper doll animation. This allowed us to move parts by rotating etc, but the animations don't look as alive as they could with a hand drawn animation.

Hand animation takes time and effort and we are a two man crew that is also creating a new game at the same time as this artistic pass on Corbin. So the progress will be slower, but done with care and love.

Here's a small preview of the new shark that will hunt Corbin as he swims to save his girl.

This should allow us to have more character in the game. Each creature will have multiple animations and have more feeling to them. We want this game to look like how fun and entertaining it truly is.

This is all in the early stages. Our plan is to slowly work through all the creatures currently in the game and release each level as they get done. Once the art is all finished, most likely, the price of the game will rise to reflect the amount of time and effort that went into the art pass. So now is a great time to pick the game up here at the store page

Expect at least one update per month on the Art here as things progress. Thank you for supporting our tiny little indie company, Afterthought Games, and we look forward to your input as the art begins to come together.

Update 1.0.13

Hey everyone,

We've been hard at work on some new things in Unreal Estate. The bulk of which revolve around improving the single player experience. We are working on the Multiplayer experience but we've been running into a lot of hardware limitation with what we can afford vs what will be efficient enough to handle a new multiplayer platform. Life of an Indie studio, right!

So, since that is taking so long we wanted to get an update out for the single player experience and something that fixes a few lingering issues we have seen. Here's what is changing in this build.

Feature Updates

  • Added easy single player level
  • Added hard single player level
  • Option menu redone
  • Added windowed mode
  • Added two new achievements

Bug fixes/Small changes

  • Zoomed in on cards now will stay on top even when another player scores
  • AI players will not have duplicate names anymore
  • Added more AI player names
  • Found a spot where a sound would play when all sound was muted

If Larry ever figures out our hardware issues we will get a multiplayer update out too. In the meantime we hope you enjoy these changes and please let us know if you see any bugs or want to see any other features in the forums.

Thanks a ton
Phil (Viedt)

Still working through some issues

The new multiplayer server isn't handling load like we hoped so we are working on some things to optimize it more. We are planning on using this for an upcoming game we have in the pipeline so we want to make sure it works well for this game and more. Along the way we cleaned up the options menu to be more usable, got rid of the mobile like icons and put actual buttons with words on it. It's much cleaner now. Hopefully we will have the update out in a couple weeks. I swear we really are working to get this thing done.

Multiplayer Update Getting Close

The rewrite is taking longer than we thought it would. Ran into some hiccups along the way, but it's coming along. We're in the first stage of testing now, which will likely yield bugs that will need to be fixed, but just want to let everyone know that we are still on top of the update.

You will also see a couple small changes when the update comes out. Here's the list

  • Windowed Mode
  • More error logging to track down anything that happens
  • Multiplayer rewrite
  • Lobby screen simplified to show current status only
  • Lobby screen will also give the number of people in the lobby so players can decide if they want to stick around for a game
  • Anygame added to the options for multiplayer games to make it easier to find a game when only a few people are online.

This should all be done by the end of the month, as long as we don't run into too many issue, but we are, of course, the greatest programmers alive, so that is never an issue. ːsteamfacepalmː

Multiplayer Update

We are working on a multiplayer update to hopefully make it easier to find a game. We know that it has to do with the volume of players we have currently so we are creating a "find any game" button that doesn't worry about how many players it can find. So if there are 4 on, it will match all 4 into a 4 player game. But if there are only 2 on, it will match those 2 and let you start playing right away. Hopefully this update will be done by mid November.

Violent Sol Kickstarter

We are happy to announce that our next project is now on Kickstarter. It's a much bigger game that will be heavily moddable with nice long story line. Get more information on Kickstarter now!
