Demo is live to celebrate Tiny Teams Indie Festival!
We're proud to bring you the news that Unto The End is one of the game's featured in the Tiny Teams Indie Festival, which gets underway today!
To see what the Tiny Teams festival has to offer, head to: https://store.steampowered.com/publisher/yogscastgames/sale/tinyteamsfestival/#TinyTeams20
Organised and hosted by Yogscast, Tiny Teams is a celebration of indie micro-studios. As you know, Unto The End is developed by 2 Ton Studios, which is comprised of husband and wife team, Sara Kitamura and Stephen Danton, so definitely falls under the micro-studio category :)
We're making the Unto The End demo live for the duration of Tiny Teams (9-15 August), and you'll have another chance to catch the demo gameplay stream with developer commentary, which will be broadcast from our Store page while the event is running.
Be sure to check out the Tiny Teams festival – there are plenty of very cool-looking projects coming from other game-making collectives with a minimal head count!

Unto The End demo is back for a limited time!
Good news everyone – the Unto The End demo is back and available to play right now! You can download it from the game's Steam page. The demo has been rolled out again as part of the Steam Festival and will be removed when the event ends on Monday 22nd June at 10AM PDT, so don't hang about if you want to play it!
The demo has been updated with a few tweaks Stephen and Sara made based on feedback from its previous outing as part of the Digital Dragons showcase hosted on Steam last month. You can read more about those changes in our previous post.
As part of the festival, 2 Ton Studios' husband and wife team, Stephen Danton and Sara Kitamura, feature in Steam's 'Developer Spotlight' interviews. The pair share memories of their real-life travels that helped to shape Unto The End, and they also reveal how Punch-Out!! has been a major influence in designing the game's deep, 2D combat system. You can watch the whole interview here:
First off, massive thanks to everyone who downloaded and played the recent Unto The End demo as part of the Digital Dragons showcase. And extra massive thanks to everyone who took the time to share feedback with us. Special shouts to Aya (@Aya08176976) and Roy (@SerRoyim) for their help tracking down some particularly nasty bugs.
Us trying to fix a bug without the help of Aya and Roy
We thought we’d provide a quick update about changes we’ve made to the game based on the feedback we’ve received, and from watching videos of folks playing the demo.
Roll refinement
Rolling into an opponent now causes knockback Enemies are now aggressively intolerant of roll spammers
But if you do a roll attack, roll now ‘cancels’ immediately when you collide with an opponent A deadly attack cunningly disguised as a harmless forward roll
There’s also now more of a grace period for rolling around jump attacks A better option than trying to block a jump attack, which can knock the sword clean out your hand
Rolling into a wall now causes knockback and a small amount of damage A perfect example of the old saying: 'only fools roll into walls'
Lastly, if you do two rolls consecutively, the second roll will have a longer 'tired' recovery. This also applies to jump.
General fixes/adjustments
D-pad can now be used for movement and blocking (can still use left-stick)
Torch radius is about 15% larger
Ambush trigger fixed on the flower shrine – both enemies now spawn at the same time
Added a lever to the lift, like the one that’s used to call it
AI tuned for opponents’ learning speed for stab, bash, fake and distract
Tuned interactions and audio with herbs and tonic when bleeding
Fixed issues with dying on the bridge within the trigger area for the Woad Captain’s ‘truce emote’
Updated descriptions on some items
Added a conditional ‘training wall' to the right-side of the training area
Various tweaks to lighting and foreground
The demo has been taken down for the time being, but – good news! – it will be making a return soon. We’ll post an update to let you know when to expect it, but if you ‘Follow’ Unto from the Store page you should receive an alert when the demo goes live.
In the meantime, you can always catch up with some of the fantastic demo playthroughs that have been posted, including this one from Alpha Beta Gamer:
Yes, you read that right – there's an Unto The End demo and it's available to download from the game's Steam page right now: get the demo here! We're super excited as it's the first time Unto The End has been publicly playable outside a showfloor event – it's been released as part of the three-day Digital Dragons 'Indie Celebration' showcase currently being hosted on Steam.
The demo lets you begin your mastery of the game's bespoke combat system as you encounter and fight creatures through perilous caves and a blood-soaked winter forest. If you need some guidance, be sure to check out the demo playthrough video with commentary from developer 2 Ton Studios, aka husband and wife team, Stephen Danton and Sara Kitamura. The vid will be streaming on the game's Steam page over the course of the Indie Celebration.
Unto The End is one of 50 indie games selected for the Indie Celebration event by a panel of industry figures, including representatives from Eurogamer, Destructoid, and Frostpunk developer, 11 Bit Studios. We're in great company, so be sure to check out the full line-up of showcased games at the Digital Dragons Indie Celebration page on Steam.
In addition to the demo, there's also a chance to get an early listen to some of the game's music. To coincide with the start of the Indie Celebration, anyone who joins the Big Sugar (i.e. the publisher of Unto The End) mailing list will receive – completely gratis – two tracks from the Unto The End OST, composed by Francesco Ameglio and Johnny Knittle. You can add your name here: https://mailchi.mp/bigsugargames/untotheend.
Anyway, enough chatter, go and play the Unto The End demo! If you're impressed, be sure to add the game to your Wishlist (which you can do now by hitting the widget below).
Xbox has released a video series shining a spotlight on the games that were going to be part of its GDC plans, and I'm delighted to say that Unto The End is one of the featured indies. As well as offering a glimpse at some never-seen-before areas with new gameplay footage, the video is narrated by Stephen and Sara, so you can hear them talking about Unto in their own words:
[previewyoutube="w1Q_E4QE0bo;full"] Would highly recommend you give all the videos a watch as there's an array of quality-looking indies to check out. You can find the whole series here: ID@Xbox Spotlight Series
