Vermillion

Perfect straight lines come to Vermillion!

The long awaited ruler is here! As part of the hand stabilizer, you can now create perfect straight lines to aid you in your painting endeavours. On top of that, there's an alternate wrist support mode, which acts as a "mahlstick" (you might have to look that one up 😅). Looking forward to seeing what you make with these new tools!

Export & other fixes

  • Adjusted exports, mostly the neutral export now gives a 100% clean output.
  • Updated from Unity 2021.2 to 2021.3, hopefully nothing breaks 🤞🏻
  • Fixed several exceptions.

Workshop support coming soon!

I'm currently working on adding Steam Workshop support for custom environments, and I figured I'd give you all a heads up in case you want to start chipping away on a personal studio or even outdoor environment you'd want to paint in. You will just have to deliver the environment as a single .glb file, in which all the models and textures are defined. You will also be able to supply your own skybox and ambience. Just modelling & texturing in Blender, and exporting as a .glb, will work perfectly. Be sure to bake the lighting as well, as there is no real time lighting in Vermillion.

You can get the template file here which shows where the easel goes and which direction it's facing.

Fix teleport

Fixed the teleport having an incorrect offset. Sorry!

Small fixes

  • Fixed controllers not tracking in some cases
  • Fixed easel not rotating correctly if it was already rotated from a previous sessions
  • Fixed mixing tray not being cleaned fully by slider brush
  • Fixed paint thinner not being removed by beating the devil out of the brush
  • Stands can now be moved to either side of the easel, so both stands can be on the same side

Fixed Vermillion not running in background

Unity has this annoying tendency of turning this checkbox off after making an Android build... Sorry for the inconvenience!

Smoother blending / dry brushing

I've smoothed the dry brushing more, so it's less scratchy and more blendy. Let me know what you think!

Small bugfixes

  • Fixed canvas mixing sensitivity slider not working.
  • Ambience no longer starts from the beginning when changing studios.
  • Mixing tray slider brush now fully clears the sides as well.

The Big Update

The big update is live! These are all the changes I've been working on the past months for the Quest release.

  • The painting mechanics have been improved, removing common artifacts while painting.
  • The paint thinner has been improved. Note that paint can no longer be thickened up again by adding opaque paint on the palette, to make it easier to maintain a constant opacity. You can add more thinner by loading more thinner from the bucket and going back to the palette.
  • There's a completely new easel, which is far more flexible. It can be folded flat so you can rest your hand on a table, or even turned upside down so you can paint lying down.
  • The brushes, brush and palette stand had a makeover.
  • There's two new brushes: a dagger brush with bristles (both smooth and rough), and a silicone dagger color shaper, both scalable. Try using the latter to move paint around on the canvas!
  • The short flat brushes are now fully scalable.
  • The rag now has a single tip, and has pressure based wiping. Dip the rag in paint thinner to fully erase paint.
  • The palette knife now needs to be tilted to create the stipple pattern, rather than it being pressure based.
  • Added a lamp on the easel, with which you can turn off the glare on the canvas.
  • The Manor studio has been refurbished.
  • A new studio has been added, a whitewall loft.
  • Vermillion is now localized in German, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
  • You now have 20 canvas undos instead of 5. The undos are also a lot more granular, happening after every slight change instead of grouping several daubs together.
  • The palette and mixing tray are saved alongside the painting, so you can always get back to painting without having to remix colors.
  • Paint on the palette is glossier, removing the glare, and looking quite shiny at the right angle.
  • New web browser.

Bug fixes:

  • The correct OpenXR runtime is now chosen behind the scenes, instead of making you do it.
  • Fixed LIV not teleporting correctly.
  • Made it easier to beat the devil out of the brushes.

Since this is a major update, it's not unlikely that there's some issues. Let me know on the forums or on Discord if you run into any issues! https://vermillion-vr.com/discord

My apologies for the handling of this situation. The EULA has been updated to lift restrictions on commercial usage.
