Vernal Edge

Vernal's Customization - Spells

One of the most important parts of Vernal's kit is her ability to cast SPELLS. These are found throughout the game in disks, and help you define your playstyle as well as stay alive. But pick carefully, you only have four potential slots to fill at any given time.

Casting a spell requires you to set an input for it, so once you get a new one, you can go to the SPELLS subscreen from the pause menu. Here, you can set any spell to one of four different directional inputs.

There are lots of spells in the game that you can equip too, heres an example of a few:

Barrage:

Hurls sparks of flame over a long distance.

Chasers:

Fires homing projectiles.

Flame spiral:

Summon orbiting flames.

This is just a fraction of Spells that you'll find as you play the game when it launches! Until then, if you want to learn more about Vernal Edge, Follow us on socials & Wishlist the game!

Alstroemeria - A rival

The Alstroemeria is a flower that symbolizes devotion and friendship. Unfortunately neither of these qualities describe Alstroemeria herself.

Alstroemeria is a mysterious woman working for Asphodel with superhuman strength and an equally powerful attitude. She seems to have the ability to channel magic current without a ring catalyst. Even without this skill, staying out of her way would be the smart thing to do.

For some reason, the mere sight of Vernal pisses her off, in fact, most things seem to piss her off? She's a very angry person, and takes this anger out on everything around her… whenever Asphodel lets her, anyway.

Making style more practical - Part II

Remember what we said last time? We take steps to combat this and make players close to the skill floor of the game still feel like they can fight stylishly. Let's break down one of those steps:

One step we've taken to encourage more stylish play is providing a mechanical incentive to juggle enemies. Assuming you know how to stun an enemy in Vernal Edge (you can play the demo for free if you don't know), then you have likely seen that enemies will recover from their stun after a short period of time. Observant players will quickly notice that enemies recover from stuns more quickly when left on the ground, and subsequently recover more slowly when in the air. This is to encourage players to juggle enemies, since keeping an enemy in the air keeps them from attacking you, allowing you to deal damage more safely.

We've taken additional steps as well; like launching enemies into each other, Charged Attacks being useful for stunning enemies, everything about Pulse, etc. The end result is a fun combat loop where you consistently have reasons to try different moves and make creative choices while fighting. If you want to give it a try now, there is a free demo available, and you can look forward to the full version of Vernal Edge releasing in the next few months!

Making style more practical - Part I

In this post we're going to talk a bit about style meters, why Vernal Edge opts to not include them, and how we go about trying to more naturally encourage you to play stylishly on your own.

To start, a style meter is usually a letter grade you can see while in combat that helps you evaluate how "stylish" your combat performance is. What exactly constitutes stylish gameplay varies from game to game, but most games look for two things. That you don't use the same moves repeatedly, and that you don't get hit.

As for ourselves, we prefer to keep your decisions in combat practical (extrinsic motivation for you designers). Being efficient in character action games can sometimes result in gameplay that is far removed from the style the game sets out to achieve. Repeating single actions, using items that lower your style score, etc. We take steps to combat this and make players close to the skill floor of the game still feel like they can fight stylishly.

Haricot, a Kingdom in disarray

Hey everyone, let's take a deeper look at the Kingdom of Haricot to scratch your lore itch!

Decades ago, the Kingdom of Haricot was torn from the earth in a catastrophic rubble of land and buildings. Over time the masses of rock have settled, and life carries on in the sky. In recent years however, strange storms have started to appear, and strange monsters have begun to roam the islands. What little peace was to be found now seems unstable...

Amidst this instability, the Church of Aloe has appeared. With a never ending quest for power, it rose to power and is now ruling with an iron fist on the Kingdom of Haricot and its people. Previously an old and insignificant organization, new technology has granted the Church of Aloe influence in the current world. Utilizing their airships and forces, the people of Haricot are forced into their hands, unable to fend for themselves.

Uncover the mysteries brewing in the mysterious floating islands where a power hungry church rules and vicious monsters roam. If you want to get all the updates about Vernal Edge, follow and wishlist the game!

Chervil - The amnesiac automaton

Today is character reveal day so let us introduce Chervil, the amnesiac automaton!

In this world, magical energy flows around and through us constantly like a current. With rings, one can channel this current into a usable form, allowing people to record their memories, abilities, and possibly even the soul into a form that can then be replicated… or at least that’s Chervil's working theory.

Chervil is a man in a machine, with little memory of who he once was. He’s a brilliant scientist and engineer who was once hungry for knowledge to a fault. Nowadays he’s much more reserved, but few can blame him after what he’s been through.

Chervil has his own history with Vernal’s father, and joins her on her quest to find him. Also he’s the only one who knows how to fly the ship, so that helps.
