OpenXR & Major Improvements Update

Welcome Back Hunters!



Long wait is over and the OpenXR update is here! This massive VR overhaul brings support for the majority of the headsets with better performance and smoother inputs. Just make sure that the right OpenXR runtime is set active before launching the game. We have pinned instructions on how to do this in the forums!

The update also includes a lot of changes, improvements, long awaited bug fixes and much, much more! To highlight a few there are visual changes to the Bulgaria map with more texture variations, surrounding mountains, faster terrain rendering with new shaders, herd idles to all animals, improved animal idle and flee behavior and improved audio.




  • Support for majority of the headsets with OpenXR
  • Reworked all inputs and interactions to support OpenXR
  • Updated Unity engine and all related plugins and assets
  • Vive cosmos and controllers should work now but needs confirmation



  • Added herd idles to all animals. This means that animals will stop as a group for longer periods of time. This breaks their constant walking, makes their behavior more natural and helps players catch up to them while tracking.
  • Improved animal idle behavior by adding more variation
  • Animals will catch up to their herd by trotting if they fall too behind
  • Improved general herd movement and behavior
  • Improved animal flee behavior. Animals' flee direction has more variation and they won’t flee directly away from the player anymore. They can also change direction while fleeing
  • Higher bleed rate will leave more blood tracks
  • Reworked Red Deer’s piebald fur textures
  • Reworked animal footprints
  • Animal footprints scale based on the animals weight
  • Improved deer air sniffing animation to be more clear
  • Improved wild boar’s trott animation
  • Decreased Hares and Pheasants walking audio volumes
  • Improved highlight visibility of animal’s tracks by adding more consistent outline to it
  • Improved animal pathfinding to prevent them from getting stuck
  • Decreased the pheasants health slightly
  • Adjusted animal hearing values (mostly lowered so players can sneak up to animals easier without them spooking from far away)



  • Replaced Oculus Audio with Steam Audio to improve audio spatialization, quality and performance
  • Improved and added more terrain texture variation in Bulgaria map
  • Replaced terrain rendering shader with better and faster one
  • Added surround mountains to the Bulgaria map
  • Added branches, leaf piles and moss patches to the biomes
  • Added distance shadows to the trees
  • Shadows off setting will now completely disable shadows in the game
  • Reworked all highlights in the game (items, tracks, animal highlights etc)
  • Books will now open when they are grabbed
  • You can grab the top of the ladder to help climbing
  • Adjusted binoculars sharpness to match the scopes
  • Removed footstep sounds when the player is falling
  • Improved the .223 rifles bolt’s grab area
  • Reworked the 3D deer target
  • Changed audio to start at 0% volume when opening the game
  • Lowered the rangefinders price
  • Bullet path thickness on x-ray view and targets are now based on the bullets diameter
  • Several adjustments to the fog during daytime, early mornings and general improvements
  • Reworked all ammo boxes with new design and look
  • Added a visible bullet when chambering a round with the rifles
  • Ammoboxes will close when the weapon your holding is full and opens if they are not



  • Adjusted terrain to reflect light properly when looking towards the sun instead of being completely black
  • Removed an outline from several vegetation when looking against fog or other light background
  • Improved optics stabilization
  • Added more moss to the mountain biome
  • Added a sound effect when walking over branches
  • Improved audio spatialization when walking through vegetation
  • Added sounds to few plants when walking through them
  • Improved animal tracking by decreasing the distance when animals leave tracks and with herd idle players should have an easier time catching up to them.
  • Improved locking check of bolts and sliders in rifles to prevent empty shots if bolt wasn’t fully down



  • Fixed a major issue where animals could hear the player beyond their hearing range after getting spooked
  • Fixed a major issue where animals would by default walk towards the north and over time move almost all animals to the northern parts of the map
  • Fixed an issue where shotgun barrel switch rotated around wrong pivot point
  • Fixed an issue where you can drop ammo from your hand with Valve Index controllers
  • Fixed an issue where wrong info board would open when purchasing the 3-9x50 scope
  • Fixed an issue where the arrow wasn’t pointing to the right save slot button
  • Fixed an issue where pheasants gave full integrity with rifles when shot on the ground
  • Fixed an issue where fireplace sound was heard far away
  • Fixed a major issue where animals left too little blood tracks
  • Fixed an issue where an animal could stop leaving blood tracks even if it was still bleeding
  • Fixed an issue where several rocks and objects didn’t have colliders
  • Fixed an issue where item highlight would stay on after touching the item
  • Fixed an issue where the map could get stuck on the left hand when dropping it
  • Fixed an issue where trophy mounts were placed slightly inside the fireplace (You have to move them to place them correctly if they currently are misplaced)
  • Fixed an issue where game audio could be really low after loading to the Bulgaria map
  • Fixed an issue where animals would flee very short distance if player was far enough
  • Fixed several issues with animals idle animations and behavior
  • Fixed an issue where the stick in pheasants mount poses would disappear
  • Fixed an issue where game audio was on while loading
  • Fixed and issue where player would spawn inside the outpost in the tutorial and fade would turn off before player was moved to the right position outside
  • Fixed an issue where animals would not continue looking around if it was stopped once
  • Fixed an issue where players could move during load times
  • Fixed an issue where you couldn’t place a scope back on the weapon
  • Fixed an issue where you could grab a weapon from the backpack on your back after first loading in to the game
  • Fixed an issue where pheasants had super hearing

Red Fox &.223 Rifle Update | Fixes And Changes #2

Hello Hunters!



This small update includes a few small changes and fixes. Finally you can hear the wooden floor under your feet in the lodges and all surfaces should use the proper walking sounds. Animals stance check change should help to keep them more predictable. The next update will most likely be the big OpenXR update which will take us a moment to finalize. This is the biggest backend change to the game and it will benefit everyone when it goes live. But it takes a ton of work and testing to get it right.





  • Changed animals to check the player's stance more frequently.*
  • Added wood floor surface to the lodge’s loft
  • Adjusted binoculars sharpness to match the scopes




  • Fixed an issue where players visibility was set to 0 by default
  • Fixed an issue where players footsteps didn’t match the surface they are walking on
  • Fixed hunting stands misaligned ladder highlights

* We’ve had reports where spooked animals will sometimes spook again from very far away even if the player was still and prone in a good wind. This change can help with this and we need your reports on it! Please let us know if spooked animals are still fleeing again from much further than they are supposed to.

Red Fox &.223 Rifle Update | Fixes And Changes #1

Greetings Hunters!



We received feedback how our new optics and magnifications were not correct and they were too small. Thank you for that! After testing and diving deeper into this, we realized that the calculations we used were not correct and magnifications were all over the place. To fix this, we completely reworked them by measuring their magnifications by hand based on real life metrics instead of relying on Unity’s camera FOV and different calculations. All optics now and in the future will use this system and are as true to life as possible.



  • Reworked all optics magnifications based on real life metrics instead of relying on different calculations to ensure they are correct.
  • Adjusted male fox spawn rates (they spawned way less than designed)
  • Adjusted predator callers position in the inventory



  • Fixed an issue where 3-9x50 scopes zoom operation was inverted when used with the left hand

Red Fox & .223 Varmint Rifle | New update


Happy New Year Hunters!



We have a new update to kick this year off! And this is an exciting one. A brand new species, red fox, has been introduced to the game. It can be found across the whole reserve and comes with six different fur variations including several rares! To help you hunt the fox, the update also adds a new rifle, .223 Varmint and a new 3-9x50 scope with adjustable zoom and high quality optics. And as always there are other changes and fixes to improve the game.

  • All optics in the game have been adjusted to their proper magnification. They were all wrongly set to 12x before. New zoom levels are:

    • Rangefinder: 6x
    • Binoculars: 8x
    • Default scope: 7x

  • Changed default scope’s clarity to medium
  • Scope’s zeroing will now work with yards
  • Lowered small table mount prices by 150
  • Improved fireplace’s visuals
  • Improved hunting stand’s visuals
  • Animal books weights are now also written in pounds
  • Updated Pheasant’s info book image
  • Updated several equipment and weapon info texts in the store
  • Info in the players stats book was split into two pages
  • Updated .44 ammobox in the store
  • Slightly increased morning ambient light brightness
  • Made roads less shiny
  • Aligned hunting stands ladder highlights better



  • Fixed an issue where table and floor mounts size indicator box didn’t scale properly
  • Fixed an issue where harvest screen would display ammo as “B-Name” in the shot information
  • Fixed an issue where black 12ga shotgun didn’t have spatialized audio
  • Fixed an issue where ambient audio would mute in certain part of the mountains
  • Fixed an issue where video overlaps the text in .44 magnums info board
  • Fixed an issue where chambered ammo was rotated the wrong way in .303 when taken from the store wall

Virtual Hunter's Anniversary And Development Update

Greetings Hunters!



Exactly one year ago today, we released Virtual Hunter for early access. It was exciting to finally put out our game that we had been working on for so long. We also knew that this was just the beginning and our real work was just starting. Through the year we have added several new species, tons of features, fixed issues reported by players and improved the graphics and performance. Our biggest update has been animal taxidermy and trophy mounts, which was well received and gave players freedom to show off their most treasured trophies in the lodge. It’s been an amazing journey so far and we want to take this time to thank everyone who has played. We have read every comment, appreciated all feedback and enjoyed the discussions in our Discord community. Our goal is to create the best VR hunting experience and chose early access so we can do so with the players. The game would not be what it is today without all of you. Cheers to all of you virtual hunters!

We'd like to also give you an update on what is going on with Virtual Hunter’s development since our last update. We started a big process of moving the game from SteamVR to OpenXR and updating our engine and tools to newer versions. This way we future proof the game for other platforms, improve useability and performance for headsets on Steam that doesn’t use SteamVR and simplify the process on our end to work on different versions of the game. This is a massive task and requires us to completely rewrite big parts of the game regarding interactions and rendering. Good news is that we are making good progress but it will take us sometime to get it fully done and ready for you guys. This is necessary for us to do because it gives us more flexibility, more tools and features to work on the upcoming content faster!

Even though we are mainly working on this big change, we have a content update planned in between. You can expect teasers of it when we are getting closer to it as always! I’m sure you'll like it :)

Deer Species Animation Rework Update

Greetings Hunters!



Ready your gear since it’s time for another update! This time we have a complete rework for our deer species with new animations, new behaviors and much more! This rework focused on bringing more life to the deer species and to give players more cues how aware they are of their surroundings. You can spot them stomping the ground if they know something is wrong, sniff the air when you are badly positioned and a wounded deer slowly walks with its head down, making it easier to spot from the group. They also have a chance to quickly drop down when shot at with a bow, so take this into account in your shot placement and aim lower, so you won’t shoot over the deer!

The update also includes several improvements, especially to animal footsteps and call spatialization. This makes locating animal sounds a lot easier and accurate in game.


Deer Species Animation Rework



  • Reworked all deer species animations to be more realistic
  • Added new animations for animal feeding, resting and idling to give them more variety
  • Added hurt behavior and hurt walk animation when a deer is lethally wounded
  • Added a dodge behavior when shooting a deer within bow’s spook distance. This is random but the chance is higher the more aware of the player the animal is.
  • Added ground stomp animation when deer is aware of the player
  • Added random ear twitching to deer species and european hare


Animal Changes



  • Increased deer species running speed to match new animations
  • Added audio cues when animals spook in the forest
  • Added variation for spook time for all animals
  • Added smoother animation transitions for all animals
  • Lowered footstep sound distance to improve performance
  • Changed pheasants integrity check to pass if animal was shot 2.5m (2.73yd) or higher above the ground with the correct ammo
  • Added a minimum run distance to animals before they start trotting when spooked

Improvements



  • Improved 3D audio spatialization for animal calls and footsteps
  • Improved animal performance when out of view
  • RAM optimization

Changes



  • Increased weapons spook radius from 300m (328yd) to 400m (437yd)
  • Increased bows spook radius from 20m (14,4yd) to 35m (38,2yd)
  • Adjusted small rocks, objects and vegetation in several biomes
  • Added more big rocks to several biomes

Fixes



  • Fixed several issues with sliding animals
  • Fixed an issue where trophy images weren’t displayed in the harvest screen
  • Fixed an issue where mobile tracker could pick up an animal call that you couldn’t hear
  • Fixed an issue where clouds were moving too fast in tutorial and lodge
  • Fixed an issue where small trees were missing in leaf tree forests
  • Fixed an issue where volumetric lights were on even if they were turned off
  • Fixed an issue where volumetric clouds were on even if they were turned off
  • Fixed an issue where falling leaves would render behind the clouds
  • Fixed an issue where trees were missing colliders
  • Fixed an issue where vegetation didn’t react to player
  • Fixed an issue where several objects and vegetation rotation didn’t follow the terrain
  • Fixed an issue where hunting stands roof would disappear from view in the distance
