Foundations 2.0

Legates,

After a tumultuous month, and nearly all of last week spent constructing IKEA furniture, I am finally back in action with the much anticipated Foundations major update!

As the name of this update suggests, the primary focus is paving the road for future additions. Now, the in-game Legion is modular, expandable, and more interactive. To do this, much of the underlying organization was modified. In the coming major updates, this will simplify the coding task, so I can focus on crafting high quality content.

In addition, this update adds new Formation control options. Before, only the position of troops in a Century could be adjusted with Marching and Battle mode. Now, higher level control over Century positions in the overall Formation is possible with layouts. This was also made fully expandable, so new Formation layouts and modes can be added with ease.

Speaking of new Formation modes, Testudo has also been introduced in this update. Although it may not be entirely useful just yet, further down the road, archers will make it a life-saving necessity…

In the coming month, I plan on introducing some additional improvements and new features to the experience. This will lead into the Auxiliaries major update, which I may combine with elements of another part of the Roadmap. If/when this happens, a new edition of the Roadmap will be published. For now, things are on course with the original plan.

I am looking forward to this Fall and Winter. Thank you all for your patience and support!

Update Log:

  • Added support for more Formation modes
  • Added support for Formation layouts
  • Added Testudo mode (in addition to Marching and Battle)
  • Added new Testudo mode shield animations for units in rear ranks
  • Added 1 column and 2 column Marching layouts

  • Added new “Foundations” music track
  • Added ability to mouse-over and see unit info in the Legion menu
  • Added ability to click on units in Legion menu to upgrade and promote
  • Added ability to transfer units via the Legion menu
  • Added new unit icon colors in Legion menu, default is Soldier and Officer, orange is Guard, red is Worker
  • Added individual Call to Arms toggles to each Century in Legion menu
  • Added Soldier and Guard/Worker sliders to each Century in Legion menu
  • Added support for new unit types in future updates
  • Added support for generic groups (includes officers, positions, modes, etc), which could apply to the Britons in future updates
  • Added Hold Pila toggle (H)
  • Changed Tesserarius and Optio to be counted as Officers, can no longer guard or work

For quick reference, here is the Roadmap. Warlord Britannia is now heading towards the Auxiliaries update!

Update 1.32

Update 1.31

Legates,

This is just a small patch which fixes bugs introduced in the 1.3 update!

Update Log:

  • Player respawns at base if below the terrain
  • Formation sets to Hold when warping back to camp after all Romans are wiped out
  • Build tool now sets (Use Preset) as default when relocating camp
  • Fixed AI weapons not disarming in their scabbards. Will not hit bodies on the ground anymore
  • Fixed friendly fire hitting legs
  • Fixed guards losing their post when spoken to by the player
  • Fixed timber refunds for a few structures

Update 1.3

Legates,

This update focuses on making base defense more fun and useful. Before, a fully enclosed camp could protect you from the barbarian horde… At least until you ran out of ammunition. Now, you and your Legionaries will be resupplied frequently, allowing for sustained defense from the battlements and towers. However, enemies will try to tear down walls and obstacles in their way, giving you a limited amount of time and making fortification systems more important.

With this new change, base construction on the march has been made incredibly streamlined. Now, when packing up and relocating camp, your old layout will be automatically placed down as blueprints. Simply assign workers and watch them rebuild your camp exactly how you left it.

This should be the final content update before the highly anticipated Foundations update makes its way out. As usual, please use Discord to submit bug reports!

Update Log:

  • Barbarians can now damage and destroy camp structures
  • Camp structures are repaired after a raid is defeated
  • Legionaries and player regain ammo every 20 seconds when under attack at camp
  • Pila now ignore parts of watchtowers and battlements to make defense easier
  • Trees now have different wood amounts
  • Guards now have a minimum Pila throw distance of 1m
  • Legionaries now carry Furca when Relocating camp
  • Formation now teleports back to camp if all Legionaries are dead
  • Melee and projectile hits now interact with dead bodies and apply a force
  • Added saved camp preset feature. Structures and points within 150m of the flag will be saved when relocating. May be selected off with the scroll wheel to start a fresh camp
  • Added Sudis stakes structure. Cheaper to build but weaker than palisades. Best used to keep enemies away from the walls while engaging them with projectiles
  • Added more cancel/clear buttons in Manage menu
  • Added Legionary deaths in stats panel
  • Removed guard/patrol point - player/AI collision
  • Removed pathfinding for the formation. Now uses custom movement solution to eliminate terrain issues
  • Removed pathfinding for mobile groups. Eliminates possibility of them getting stuck and never despawning
  • Fixed guard and patrol point placement glitchiness
  • Fixed projectiles not hitting legs
  • Fixed Veni Vidi Vici quest not unlocking if some settlements were desolated
  • Improved Legionary pila throwing, does not account for target lead or drop yet
  • Improved enemy reaction speed, interrupts wait time when attacked
  • Improved pathfinding on battlements and watchtowers

Update 1.2

Legates,

The Emperor has been pleased with your progress. However, he expressed great concern with the security of your marching camps. Raids and Convoys have been a constant malady. Too many Roman lives have been lost.

In order to bolster your defensive capabilities, I was authorized to expedite the delivery of a number of structures originally planned for a much later update. In addition, your stationary Guards will now hold their ground and cast Pila at incoming enemies.

In addition to these new elements, a number of bugs have been fixed, and Quality of Life improvements made. There is still more work to do on the road to the Foundations update, but things are heading in the right direction. As usual, please use the Discord to submit reports, those are critical. I appreciate your patience while I work to fix bugs...

To Climb Ladders, get adjacent, and repeatedly press space to climb while looking at them. I am aware they are a little tricky, and working on a new system.

Update Log:

  • Added Watchtower structure, for now be sure to remove all items and points before removing. I am working on a failsafe to prevent removal if legionaries are still inside
  • Added Gate structures, press E to use

  • Added a Dismiss button to Promotion menu

  • Added Date to Camp Tab menu

  • Fixed formation officer count to include command staff
  • Fixed guards crowding around patrol points when enemies nearby
  • Fixed Keybinds not saving between sessions
  • Fixed weird movement when opening TAB menu

  • Expanded Call to Arms and Disband radius to 100 meters (from 60m)
  • Increased Marching formation speed
  • Decreased Battle formation speed to half of marching speed
  • Increased convoy destination-reached distance to 50 meters (from 15m), should help with lingering convoys that got stuck on a fence and could not despawn
  • Bound command tool guard/patrol point rotation to build tool rotation keybind
  • Local unrest is now lowers slightly after successfully defeating a Raid
  • Gave starting troops random days in service 0-2, does not apply to new recruits
  • Recruitment now allowed only if at camp
  • Guards manning stationary Guard points will stand their ground and throw Pila at incoming enemies
  • Trooper leg collider now ignores the terrain when alive. Hopefully this alleviates the stuck on hills glitch
  • Raids now begin on July the 15th, giving a couple full days of leeway when starting a new game. Small ambushes and Night attacks can still occur

Update 1.12

Legates,

This is a very small patch designed to alleviate two problems. One, not being able to respawn when killed/overrun at your camp. And two, troopers going MIA.

Much more to come next week on the road to the Foundations major update!

  • Player can now respawn even when the homebase flag is missing, adding a failsafe to a potential saving/loading bug
  • Soldiers warp to a random loiter point (tents and the homebase flag) on game load
  • Shrunk contubernium and officer tent navigation obstacle, which should cut down on "traffic jams"
  • Added Steam DRM to game executable. Pirates, ye be warned!

Update 1.11

Legates,

This is just a small fixes/QOL patch, to pave the road for Update 1.2, which is coming up fast.

I finally tracked down what had been causing your settings to not save. It was the Steam Cloud all along! And a bug of my own making... Settings should now save and operate correctly. However, they have been reset to default settings, so make sure to go in and adjust/save as needed.

Also, those who had the issue where the game was invisible on launch, now it starts in Windowed mode. Hopefully that resolves it. Other than that, I might have fixed the steep terrain bug where troops get permanently stuck.

  • Fixed options not saving, disabled Steam Cloud save for the preferences file. Your settings have been reset to default values, please reset them as desired and save
  • Added max framerate slider
  • Added mouse sensitivity slider
  • Added atmosphere volume slider
  • Convoy spawn area now scales reasonably (square root) with enemy amounts
  • Added Kills to the unit mouseover
  • Fixed upgrade cost mouseover readout
  • Fixed barbarian decapitation sound not playing
  • Adjusted trooper feet collider to help steep terrain bug

Update 1.1

Legates,

This update is the first of many designed to fine tune the balance and pace of the game, as well as address some issues brought to my attention. I have a running list of TODO fixes and improvements, which are well on the way, and will be taken care of before work on the Foundations update commences.

The main gameplay changes to look out for are Service Requirements for officer promotions, and the ability to transfer troops between centuries (to help facilitate the new requirement). Now more than ever, keeping your veteran troops alive is critical.

Update Log:

  • Added volume sliders for Master, Effects, and Interface sounds
  • Added override to screen setting to launch in windowed mode, multiple users reported an issue with the fullscreen launch default. Known issue: Fullscreen may not save over to the next session, working on a fix for this.
  • Added blood toggle in options menu, I heard report of a father wanting to play the game with his son, but the blood was too extreme
  • Workers will stop harvesting when no storage, and just stand and wait, lets save the trees
  • Added cancel all harvest jobs button in manage menu
  • Relocate camp now removes all build/harvest jobs, and guard and patrol points
  • Set default screen mode as windowed, this may help those with first-time startup issues
  • Added kills tracker to each legionary
  • Added Days in Service requirement for most officers. This is designed to slow down the mid-late game, which would have the player immediately replenishing their army if they had enough money. Now, you will need to keep at least some of your troops alive for a decent amount of time, so they can accumulate Days in Service enough for promotions
  • Added ability to Transfer a legionary into another Century. This is designed to allow players to quickly move around their troops with many days in service, instead of recruiting fresh troops and having to wait on promotions
  • Formation UI men and officers count now updates when a unit is killed
  • Doubled First Steps and First Contact silver reward. You will not be able to fully staff the first Century until day 2 now, so keep your troops alive with the best armor possible
  • Decreased gold and silver taxation income
  • Increased taxation unrest penalties
  • Decreased VIP convoy to normal convoy ratio
  • Increased combined raid enemy spawn speed
  • Capped the combined raid to 250 enemies, before it could potentially spawn 400
  • Increased minimum convoy activity distance
  • Increased Noble gathering spawn distance from player
  • Lowered enemy amount and enemy prosperity (armor rating) in convoys slightly
  • Increased Notification text contrast
  • Increased palisade terrain angle limit, can now be placed on slopes
  • Increased build tool rotation speed
  • Fixed infinite jumping glitch with shield
  • Lowered passive unrest reduction
  • Increased promotion costs slightly
  • Lowered night raid chance slightly
  • Increased plate and veteran armor costs
