Nemesis Air Assault Preview #2 - NATO
Hello!
We are back with the second preview of our upcoming Nemesis: Air Assault DLC. Today’s spotlight will be shone on NATO’s U.S. 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
We also have some good news on the Nemesis DLC’s launch, which you can read at the end of this DevBlog.
Just a quick reminder: Nemesis: Air Assault follows the popular Steel Division 2Nemesis DLC concept. Each mini-expansion is themed, bringing two new divisions plus new weapons, units, and models. The idea is simple: for each Nemesis we present three options, and afterward, you get to vote on which Nemesis DLC should be developed next.
In Nemesis: Air Assault’s case, we already made the choice ahead of time to speed up development. Future Nemesis DLC will run the public gauntlet as advertised above. In last week’s DevBlog, we took a good look at the Warsaw Pact’s Soviet 56-ya O.G. DShB or the 56th Separate Guards Air Assault, which forms one part of the two-division Nemesis DLC.
Now, without further ado, the U.S. 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
U.S. 101st Airborne Division’s History
Much like its sister formation, the 82nd Airborne Division, the U.S. 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) had a distinguished World War II career. Activated during this conflict as a paratrooper formation, it famously saw action during D-Day, Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. Commander Richard “Dick” Winters, of Band of Brothers fame, fought in the division during the war.
After World War II, the 101st Airborne would be deployed in the Vietnam War, where it participated in the Battle of Hamburger Hill in 1969. Around this time, the formation was reorganized, following the structure and equipment of an airmobile division. This meant a goodbye to aircraft and parachute training and a closer integration with helicopters. However, one of its brigades kept its parachute jump training, while the other two were reformed as air assault formations.
Interestingly enough, much of the late Cold War saw limited deployment of the “Screaming Eagles” even as part of the US Army’s quick reaction force, the XVIII Airborne Corps (which led to some snide remarks from the more “battle-experienced” 82nd Airborne, see further below).
U.S. 101st Airborne Division Detailed
The 101st Airborne was reorganized as a light infantry division (much like its counterparts the 9th Motorized, 10th Mountain and already present 82nd Airborne Division). The infantry battalions were formed around the newly introduced Humvee, but unlike other divisions, the 101st Airborne had more airmobile and air support power. This did mean that there was no armored battalion (or even armored vehicles) associated with the division!
Not having a single armored vehicle is a bit too much, so we returned part of the armored detachments of the 194th Armored Brigade (which were previously seconded to the 82nd Airborne Division in WARNO’s Early Access, but which we removed before the game’s official launch). Another attachment to the 101st Airborne will be the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), the US special forces’ helicopter wing.
By the end of the Cold War, the ”Chicken Men” (a nickname given to the 101st Airborne troopers while serving in Vietnam as their Screaming Eagle patch was mistaken for a chicken) were mocked by their 82nd Airborne paratrooper counterparts for not being “true” airborne anymore. Only a minority of the division’s soldiers had parachute training, while the division as a whole couldn’t count on the same amount of combat experience as its sister division, having not taken part in the Grenada and Panama operations.
Still, in terms of training and preparedness, the division was still above the regular divisions in the US Army. This is why additional Veterancy experience and Shock trait, like other airborne divisions, have been kept for the 101st Airborne troopers.
The U.S. 101st Airborne Division Air Assault in WARNO
So, what can you expect of the American paratroopers in Nemesis: Air Assault? Note that some of the following is still a work in progress.
Don’t forget, units bolded and italic are new!
LOG - an average category for this division, bringing it closer to a typical infantry battlegroup, with a fair number of slots but only light unit options.
No Forward Operating Base and only very light ground supply vehicles (the new M274 SUPPLY MULE and M561 SUPPLY GOAT).
The 101st Airborne will rely heavily on UH-60A SUPPLY and CH-47C SUPPLY as its logistical foundation.
Command vehicles are either HUMVEE, OH-58C or UH-60A helicopters.
INF - as expected, an excellent category.
Much like their Soviet counterparts, the 101st Airborne’s AERO infantry are like the 82nd Airborne’s AIRBORNE squads but lack the Forward Deployment ability.
Rifle squads will see the deployment of the new AERO-RIFLES, which is a new unit created to fit the 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne’s doctrine. Existing units in other divisions will be renamed AIR CAV TROOPERS.
Other new unit variants include the self-explanatory AERO-RIFLES (DRAGON) and AERO-RIFLES (AT-4). This last unit, again like its Soviet counterpart, is a “half-platoon,” almost 50% bigger compared to a regular squad with more men, one extra machine gun, and more anti-tank ammo. This unit can only deploy with the CHINOOK as transport.
Furthermore, the AERO-RIFLE LDR., already featured in 82nd Airborne, have been reworked with airborne models and the Shock trait.
In real life, the 101st Airborne only had enough airlifting assets to make one of its three brigades fully airmobile. The rest had to do with HUMVEE transports, and as such, are featured as the new AERO. FIRE TEAM LDR., AERO. FIRE TEAM (AT-4) and AERO. FIRE TEAM (DRAGPON).
Two other new units are the AERO. ENGINEERS LDR., a 12-man squad fielding the M202 Flash, and the AERO. ENGINEERS with explosives.
The battlegroup will also be able to call on the usual array of MP squads, TOW-2, M60 and M2HB weapon teams.
The division’s transports include HUMVEE, BLACKHAWK, and CHINOOK helicopters, plus one newcomer, the quirky GAMA GOAT replacing M35 trucks (though the latter will still be available for heavier towed artillery).
A new unit is the old (but first-ever in WARNO) M274 MULE M40A1, deployable as a mobile fire support recoilless rifle.
One special feature of the division will include several special forces’ GREEN BERETS LDR. and new GREEN BERETS (ODA) squads. Green Berets’ companies aren’t structured into typical platoons and squads, but into intermediary Operational Detachment Alpha (or ODA… and if anyone ever wondered where the “A” came from in “A-Team” this is it; they were all former ODA members from the Vietnam War!). These latter squads are 14-man strong special forces veterans being brought to the battlefield in modified new MH-47D CHINOOK, equipped with a side-door Gatling gun plus extra ECM.
Another unique feature is that this squad will have a fourth weapon slot: M16A2, M249 SAW, M21 Sniper Rifle, and AT-4. This was made possible thanks to a UI rework.
Note that this feature will not be unique for too long; we will make a pass through all the nations of WARNO and add a 4th weapon slot where fitting. This update will be detailed in a future DevBlog!
ART - average with primarily light artillery options, all being towed pieces.
The new AERO. M252 82mm (a light mortar with more range than the self-propelled 82mm example mounted in a M125) plus AERO. M30 107mm mortars.
M102 105mm and M198 155mm howitzers.
While all artillery units are towed, and none self-propelled, all except for the M198 can be airlifted onto the battlefield.
TANK - somewhat lacking, with few slots and all being expensive. Not many options either.
As we mentioned above, the 101st Airborne didn’t actually have any armor at all in reality. It counts on a large number of M1025 HUMWEE TOW instead.
Though with the addition of the 194th Armored Brigade, a few cards of “vanilla” and command variants of the M1IP will be made available.
A new unit is another member of the Mechanical Mule family of vehicles: the cheap M274 MULE I-TOW carrier.
RECO - a pretty decent category for the division, though only foot and helicopter units are available. The recon vehicles that are present act as transports.
The new AERO. SCOUTS and AERO. SCOUTS (GSR), which both are large 10-man recon squads. SNIPER teams are also present. These units can be deployed in transport helicopters or armed HUMVEES.
Recon rotorcraft include the OH-58D KIOWA and OH-58D KIOWA WARRIOR, as well as the electronic warfare-dedicated unit, the EH-60A QUICK FIX II.
And the cherry on the cake: DELTA operators as 6-man veteran special forces squads. They will field 3x Colt Commando, 2x M249 SAW, and an M24 sniper rifle (not just DMR). The dedicated and cool-looking M998 HUMWEE DELTA, itself a recon transport with the Special Forces trait, will act as the squad’s mode of transportation.
AA - disappointing, with only a few options, mostly light ones, and all being expensive.
The classic AERO. STINGER and OH-58C/S helicopter.
The division relies on Vulcans for close anti-air protection but does feature the AERO. M167A2 PIVADS variant, which is more accurate and has more range than the A1 one. It can also be airlifted.
The 194th Armored Brigade, providing some much-needed anti-air support, gets to add a single card of M48A1 CHAPARRAL.
Another member of the Mechanical Mule family makes its appearance as the M274 MULE M2HB, a cheap transport and anti-air vehicle for Stinger teams.
HELO - very good, as can be expected from an airmobile division.
Access to all COBRA variants except for the ATAS and C-NITE.
Access to all APACHE versions, including a new AH-64A APACHE ATAS variant, with 8x Hellfire and 4x Stinger missiles.
The 160th SOAR provides a contingent of the AH-6F LITTLE BIRD, but also the new AH-6H LITTLE BIRD featuring the same airframe but more heavily armed.
Another unit provided by this squadron is the MH-60A DAP, which is a gunship variant of the Blackhawk with a 30mm Chaingun, a 19-rocket pod, and two M134 Miniguns. These helicopters will come with the Special Forces trait.
AIR - nothing too spectacular.
With enough helicopter support, the US Air Force contributes by providing overwatch and air superiority in the form of F-15C EAGLE [AA2] and F-4E PHANTOM II [AA].
Dedicated close air support planes are the F-4E PHANTOM II in HE and NPLM role, plus one F-111F [HE].
The electronic warfare EF-111A RAVEN will also be found in this category. This plane is currently only available to the 8th Infantry Division.
While a much lighter division compared to the Soviet 56th Separate Guards Air Assault, the 101st Airborne instead counts on an excellent arsenal of infantry and helicopters for its offensive power. This allows it to strike fast, accurately, and hard.
We hope you are well. The upcoming Nemesis: Air Assault DLC takes center stage in today’s DevBlog. We’ll look at the new mini-expansion to grace WARNO, highlighting one of the two new divisions (and the new units the airmobile formation brings).
Let’s put the spotlight on the hardy veterans of the Soviet 56-ya O.G. DShB or the 56th Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade.
Nemesis: Air Assault
Nemesis: Air Assault will be the very first of the Nemesis DLC to make its way to WARNO. The Nemesis mini-expansion, each with two divisions and bringing new weapons, units, and models, is a concept we introduced in Steel Division 2 - where it has proven to be very popular. The idea is simple: out of three options, you get to vote on which Nemesis DLC should be developed next.
Be prepared for some furious propaganda battles, as we will prepare three separate themed Nemesis options. After showcasing each pair, the ballot opens, and whichever pair of divisions wins will get trucked over to Eugen’s workshop for a release on a later date. The other divisions will go on the shelf (perhaps even to be dusted off at a future date).
Much like Steel Division 2, the debut Nemesis DLC we have decided already ahead of time. This is chiefly for ease of development and to allow the divisions to be ready quicker.
In WARNO’s case, this will be Nemesis: Air Assault, focusing on two airmobile divisions, featuring the Soviet 56-ya O.G. DShB or the 56th Separate Guards Air Assault and the U.S. 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
56th Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade’s History
The Soviet 56th Separate Guards Air Assault’s history is closely tied to the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s. The particular formation was created from several independent or disbanded Soviet airborne units. Only two months after its creation, the brigade took part in the initial invasion of Afghanistan, securing key mountain passes and allowing the 40th Army to advance throughout the country quickly. For almost ten years, the 56th Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade would remain in Afghanistan, producing some of the most hardened Soviet airborne veterans of this conflict.
Although the brigade’s air assault troops would initially ride their helicopters from peak to pass or strike in the heart of the enemy territory, things changed after the introduction of Stinger MANPADS into Mujadheen's hands. From the mid-80s onwards, helicopter and gunship losses mounted, putting prominence on the “Stinger Scare” and forcing the reorganization of the Soviet brigade.
This meant that the 56th Separate Guards Air Assault became closer to a mechanized infantry formation, transported to battle in much safer BMP-2s and getting some additional organic firepower in the form of T-62 main battle tanks.
In real life, the brigade returned to the USSR in June 1989 as part of the overall Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan. However, in WARNO’s timeline, the Afghan-Soviet War is still ongoing, with the Soviet Union never retreating from the Central Asian country. The 56th Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade is transferred just in time for the Warsaw Pact’s invasion of West Germany in the summer of 1989. Soviet high command envisioned a much better use for the brigade’s hardy air assault forces fighting Americans and West Germans instead of getting bogged down in hunting hard-to-defeat guerillas.
56th Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade’s Detailed
How will the 56th Separate Guards Air Assault look like in Nemesis: Air Assault? Note that most of the following is still very much work in progress. Units bolded and italic are new!
Most of the brigade’s infantry units will be roughly similar to the current 35th Guards Air Assault Brigade, although there are some historical and gameplay differences. We also found a way to introduce a host of new units.
We have duplicated all the ”DESANT” units and created a ”DSh.” variant. While using the same model and sharing the Veterancy and Shock trait, the main difference is that the DSh. versions lack the Forward Deployment trait.
Furthermore, some specific infantry units will use different weapons, mostly older small arms and armaments, including the new RPO Rys (shorter range but bigger caliber than the existing RPO A) and RPG-16 (more range but less AP compared to RPG-7).
Lastly, no UAZ jeep, but instead the new LuAZ amphibious jeep used in a corresponding role.
Although nominally an air assault unit, the 56th Separate Guards Air Assault has been reorganized with heavier mechanized equipment. This means only part of its infantry can use helicopter transport. For the same reason, the battlegroup will have fewer HELO slots open compared to their American Nemesis: Air Assault counterpart, but in turn, count on a bigger TANK category.
The 56th Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade Detailed
So, what can you expect?
LOG - more generous than existing WARNO airborne divisions. Like other airborne battlegroups, the brigade will not be able to deploy any Forward Operating Base.
New units include the Mi-6 heavy (although not as much as the Mi-26) supply helicopter and the CHAIKA, a dedicated but unarmed command variant of the BTR-60.
INF - the battlegroup’s main strength thanks to:
The new DSh. infantry coming in a variety of shapes and sizes, including one with the RPG-7VL, another with the RPG-16, a PULEMETCHIKI flavor, METIS and a unit with the RPG-22. The latter supersized unit is particularly special, representing half a platoon (so a 1.5 squad) with 50% more men, machine guns, and AT ammo, but only deployable in a Mi-8. With the large capacity of a Mi-8, it felt more than fitting to cramp some extra troops into the hold. Note that the U.S. 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) will have a similar counterpart infantry unit.
A few elite DSh. AFGANTSY squads, with the RPO A.
”Flame” DSh. SAPERI using the older (and new weapon) RPO Rys.
The lightly armedOKHRANA units were used for securing and demining roads (an endless chore in Afghanistan).
The usual array of PG-9, FAGOT, KONKURS, NSV, AGS (model redone) and KOMENDATURA squads.
Transport for the infantry is one area where the 56th Separate Guards Air Assault shows its variety and unit diversity:
The infantry’s main transport is the BMP-2D, which is an up-armored and non-amphibious BMP-2 (already featured in-game).
The main wheeled APC will be the new BTR-70D, also up-armored and non-amphibious. This vehicle proved the favored platform for Soviet battlefield modifications by bolting extra weapons on top of the turret. These include the new BTR-70 AGS with an extra grenade launcher.
One of the most unusual (and most famous) Afghan Frankenstein APCs are, without a doubt, the BTR-70 S-5 and BTR-70 S-8, respectively featuring a 16x57mm and 20x80mm rocket pod sourced from a helicopter for extra ground-based fire support!
Added to that, the BTR-70 RYS with four RPO Rys packed together, Flash-like, bolted-on, and used as assault engineers’ vehicles.
The BMD and BTR-D proved unsuitable for the harsh environment in Afghanistan, too light to withstand the often-encountered mines. These vehicles were quickly discarded for the more unusual GM-TU, basically an MT-LB cut in half. These come in several variants: the unarmed GT-MU-1D and the battlefield-modified weapon-carrying GT-MU-1D AGS, GT-MU-1D SPG-9 and GT-MU-1D ZU-23-2.
For the same reason, the GAZ-66B trucks weren’t liked due to their cabin being unprotected from mines. This is why the brigade favors the heavier URAL-4320.
Of course, for an airmobile brigade, armed variants of the Mi-8 will be available for some infantry squads, as well as the Mi-24D DESANT for the veteran DSh. AFGANTSY.
The new OKHRANA security squads will have their own transport, the URAL-4320 METLA, an “A-Team”-like up-armored truck with a BRDM-2 turret and S-5 rocket pod stuck on top. This truck will be a troop transport for security troops and will likewise come with the Security trait.
ART - an average category in a number of slots with light options.
These include 82mm and 120mm mortars, as well as a few MT-LB VASILEK and NONA-S self-propelled units.
Further backed by D-30 towed and 2S1 GVOZDIKA self-propelled 122mm howitzers.
Plus BM-21 and BM-21V MLRS.
The heaviest artillery unit on hand isn’t a howitzer but a mortar, the relatively rare (and new unit) M-240 240mm coming in separate HE and CLU variants.
TANK - a stronger category compared to other airborne divisions.
A new unit includes the LuAZ-967M FAGOT amphibious jeep.
Furthermore, one card each of the new T-62MDK (command), T-62MD1 (without ATGM) and T-62MD (with ATGM) main battle tanks. The “MD” variant features extra side and rear "cope cage" armor compared to the “M” version.
RECO - another strong category, featuring units such as:
DSh. RAZVEDKA, a 4-man team deployable in either LuAZ jeeps, Mi-8 or Mi-24D DESANT, as well as heavier 8-man DSh. MOT. RAZVEDKA with access to RAZV. BTR-60PB or RAZV. BMP-2D.
The venerable BRDM-2 armored car.
The Mi-8PPA recon jammer helicopter. This variant is older than the Mi-8MTPI already in the game, and features less ECM.
The only member of the BMD family kept in service in the air assault brigade is the REOSTAT radar recon unit.
A more unusual radar recon unit is the ZSU-23-4M2 (PSNR), which is a Shilka SPAAG with a PSNR ground radar bolted on the turret. Very useful to spot Mujahedins on the move - even at night - this vehicle has turned into a pure fire support recon vehicle, unable to engage planes anymore.
SPETSNAZ GRU (Stinger) are wily special forces recon troops operating deep behind enemy lines. This particular squad has pilfered an enemy weapon cache, using captured (early) Stinger Basic MANPADs against their previous owners.
AA - a mere brigade, the 56th Separate Guards Air Assault doesn’t have access to any heavy or long-range AA systems. On the other hand, what it does do well is protection at close range.
The main MANPAD available (aside from the Spetznaz carrying looted Stingers) will be carried by DSh. IGLA teams.
SPAAG units include the ZSU-23-4M2 AFGHANSKII (which we first introduced in reference to this real-life brigade) and the battlefield-modified URAL-4320 ZPU-4 and URAL-4320 ZU-23-2, used in equal measure as ground fire support vehicles and for short-range anti-air warfare.
The only SAM system available is the MT-LB STRELA-10M.
HELO - helicopters are well represented with far-ranging access to armed Mi-8 and Mi-24V andMi-24P (but not the Mi-24VP variant).
A new helicopter available only to this battlegroup is a Mi-24P [AA] with two R-60M missiles.
AIR - a rather average category.
You can count on a mix of MiG-23MLD air cover and MiG-27 and Su-25 close air support aircraft.
Two new MiG-27 variants are featured: the MiG-27K [AT1] and MiG-27K [AT2], respectively with 2x (new) KH-29L AGM plus 80mm rockets, and 2x KH-29T AGM with R-60M A2A missiles.
The 56th Separate Guards Air Assault will prove to be a versatile division, being half airmobile, half mechanized, with plenty of veteran soldiers. A host of jury-rigged and battlefield-modified vehicles will give the battlegroup’s arsenal a colorful twist.
Until next week
That’s all for this very first Nemesis: Air Assault preview. We’ll be back next week to detail the DLC’s NATO counterpart, the elite U.S. 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
We hope you are well. In today’s DevBlog, we’ll give a sneak peek at the first freeReinforcement Pack, a new map coming to WARNO: Urban Frontlines.
Let’s go!
Bigger and Better
We are pretty stoked to show you our latest map for WARNO: Urban Frontlines. This one is inspired by the West German “railway” city of Lehrte in Lower Saxony. We took extra care to ratchet up the intensity of this particular battlefield, requiring the best of our commanders in terms of tactics and strategy.
One of the things we managed to do differently is our back-end optimization and performance, even on smaller configurations. That has allowed us to create a denser urban city than ever before.
Until now, we always had to position our urban maps on 2x2 grids. Urban Frontlines is, however, using a 3x3 grid, covering approximately 9 km² which is similar in size to popular maps like Airport, Twin Cities, and Rocks. This new scale will allow for even more destructive and all-encompassing urban combat.
Mechanized Infantry
The city’s design has been geared towards letting both infantry and mechanized units duke it out. You can see this with some of the open areas in the city's heart, allowing units to benefit from decent lines of sight. The infantry will, however, excel in the numerous covered zones scattered throughout the town, providing endless opportunities for ambushes and heroic last-stand defenses.
One element that makes Urban Frontlines unique is that it's crisscrossed by several railway lines, reflecting the real-life Lehrte inspiration. This allowed us also to introduce a new railway wagon asset - ta-daa! These can block lines of sight depending on their location.
Until next week
Do you like the new Urban Frontlines map? Let us know what you think!
It’s good to be back! We hope that the dust has settled a bit after WARNO’s official launch out of Early Access and our “lessons learned” roll-out of the deluxe Gold and Expansion variant. There are many great things to look forward to.
In today’s DevBlog, we take an initial stab at the upcoming Nemesis: Airborne Assault DLC coming in the near future.
As part of this helicopter-heavy DLC, we want to rework a rather Cold War-iconic Soviet gunship: the fearsome-looking Mil Mi-24 Hind.
The Devil’s Chariot
So, what’s the deal with improving the “Devil’s Chariot,” aka the Mi-24 Hind? We wanted to update the Hind’s in-game models, which we found to be incorrect and lacking in certain areas, especially the Mi-24D variant.
Thanks to expert research and work from WARNO’s very own Strike Team, the Soviet gunship will shine like new (or old, depending on World War III usage).
Let’s detail each of the variants currently in WARNO, including some sexy new images showing all the latest fine-tuning that has gone into the helicopter’s models.
A Little Renovation
The Mi-24 is the epitome of a “scary Red attack helicopter.” Though it might look crude, its aggressive lines are a sight to behold, putting the living fear into the hearts of combat soldiers and sandal-wearing insurgents alike.
The Soviet attack helicopter is actually a small wonder of aerodynamics, being one of the fastest helicopters in operation in 1989 with a surprising amount of agility. This was achieved with some unconventional design choices, including tilting the entire fuselage with the tail twisted in the opposite direction. Apart from featuring plentiful armament hard points, the wings provide extra lift.
Mi-24D
It might not have been the very first Hind variant, but it surely can be counted as one of its most famous. Entering into production in 1973, the Mi-24D was the first one to have the tandem arrangement of pilot and gunner. The weapons carried were a highlight, with the improved 9M17P Falanga-P being a particularly powerful weapon.
The Mi-24D made its debut in Afghanistan, with additional survivability elements added while in theater, also making its way to WARNO’s model of this gunship. The revised Mi-24D will be present in Soviet and East German armies and future Polish and Czechoslovak arsenals.
Mi-24V
Next up is the Mi-24V. This can be considered an improved Mi-24D produced from 1976 onwards. It received a much more powerful anti-tank missile, the Kokon, as part of the Shturm-V weapon system.
Another defining feature of this variant was the helicopter's speed. Soviet designers realized that an attack helicopter only had a brief window to use its armaments against an armed-and-dangerous opponent effectively. The Kokon was a great example, upping the projectile speed to supersonic flight with increased range, making it one of the fastest ATGMs in the Cold War.
Mi-24P
The Mi-24P from 1981 focused on upgrading its cannon by installing the powerful GSh-30-2 (as seen on the Su-25, but with slightly longer barrels) as its main gun. This autocannon was extremely effective against all types of targets. The example we are showing is a late production variant, which the East German Volksarmee also used.
Mi-24VP
The Mi-24VP, introduced in 1985, is the ultimate incarnation of the gunship as designed by the Soviets. Aside from all the previous improvements, this variant gains the GSh-23L autocannon in a special nose turret, which is a slight step up compared to the brutish gun example in the Mi-24P. The turret is an upgrade, as it can freely turn. An extremely rare variant, the Mi-24VP, was only fielded by the Soviets.
Mi-24K
The Mi-24Kp is a separate branch in the gunship’s lineage, better known as Korrektirovschik or “the one that corrects artillery fire”. Equipped with more advanced optical sights and cameras, it is unable to carry ATGMs in combat. This recon helicopter can still fire a respectable quantity of S-8 rockets.
Until next week
All right, commanders, that’s all for this week’s DevBlog. After last week’s developments, we understand emotions may run high in certain corners. We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience - we can only learn from our mistakes and do it better next time.
Once again, thanks for the continued support, commanders. Don’t forget to keep the discourse civil and respectful.
Yesterday’s launch of WARNO Gold, the belated deluxe version of our game, clearly didn't go according to the plan (but which plan does in the face of battle?).
The bundle’s pricing and actual discount for our dedicated community were not what we had foreseen. WARNO Gold doesn’t carry nearly as much of a discount for Early Access owners as we would have liked. Coupled with technical problems and back-end discount/sales issues, this makes the “bad news” part of today’s emergency DevBlog.
However, we hope to make amends for this little snafu. Please keep on reading for the “good news”!
WARNO Gold, 1-2-eh-5?
This deluxe bundle of ours is turning into a bigger headache than we expected. We originally envisioned to have Gold launch before the game’s official release out of Early Access. This didn’t happen; we encountered difficulties getting the Gold Steam pages approved and validated. Added to this, there were a lot of “under-the-hood” mechanics to do with Steam pricing and discounts that threw a wrench into our release plan.
This resulted in the inclusion of an Expansion Pass, and with Gold’s release, our calculations for the actual discount price were erroneous. The horror! We have punished those responsible and put them together with the latest batch of interns in Eugen’s coal shed for a much-needed “reeducation” program.
This leads us to:
The discount to get Gold does not live up to a special discount previously proposed to Early Access owners, which, in reality, fell far too short of what we had envisioned.
As the Eugen team, we apologize for this mistake.
WARNO Gold Technical Issues
Making a game is hard, but releasing and marketing a game is even harder, or so it seems. One technical issue was that “officially,” WARNO did not launch out of Early Access until the Gold’s launch yesterday, May 30th…
This technical consideration makes it impossible for us to distinguish between Early Access owners from those before the actual official launch on May 23rd and players who joined the battle after that (so until yesterday).
We also can’t just add an extra discount on top of the current discount or the Expansion Pass (Steam doesn’t work that way).
This left us finding an alternative way to make amends. Here it comes!
WARNO Gold Extra Extra Goodies
So, within the limited playing field we currently have, we wanted to offer the following to all WARNO Early Access owners (that is, those who owned the game before yesterday’s Gold launch).
Digital Guides as a Gift Instead of an actual extra discount - which we can’t do - we will make for free immediately the Digital Guides with a value of $9.99 / 9,99€ (or $7.99 / 7,99€ discounted in the bundle).
Now, these Guides are pretty kick-ass, and we think this goes part-way to righting the ship, but we understand this gift might not be for everyone. Before you raise your torches and pitchforks again, there is more!
Two Brand-New Early Access Pack Divisions We will add for free 2 brand-new Divisions as part of the Early Access Pack (containing 5 Divisions already). These Divisions need to be first created, designed, developed, etc. so they will come at a future, still-to-be-determined date. This will most likely be afterNemesis: Airborne Assault.
The Early Access Pack is already automatically and freely available to Early Access owners of WARNO. This means 7 Divisions for a DLC with the value of $9.99 / 9,99€ (newcomers can buy the pack separately from now on).
Once again, apologies
That’s it, commanders. Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience. We hope that we have things put right, with gifts of a combined value of $20.00 / 20,00€ for those caught in the WARNO Gold snafu.
We hope you are well. WARNO’s recent official launch out of Early Access has been the crown of years of hard work, but the Eugen team is not resting on their laurels.
Behind the scenes, we are busy fixing bugs, checking technical issues, updating texts, and tackling a whole bunch of other under-the-hood tinkering.
One of the most pressing problems was, of course, getting the deluxe version of WARNOGold online as soon as possible. And we finally pulled it off!
Check it out!
WARNO Gold and Expansion Pass
Having had some difficulties getting WARNO Gold online. In order to adhere to new Valve guidelines, we added an Expansion Pass next to our deluxe bundle.
WARNO Gold features the “vanilla” base game, plus Expansion Pass plus Digital Guides.
If you already own parts of this bundle, these items will be automatically discounted from the bundle! For all owners of WARNO, there will be a special discount.
WARNO Gold So what’s this hullabaloo about WARNO Gold?
Exactly the same content as the “vanilla” edition, plus:
Digital Guides containing 2 e-books with almost 200 pages in total! - WARNO's Timeline and Designer's Notes respectively on Army General, Operations plus an in-depth Divisions overview.
WARNO's Timeline goes deep into “how it came to pass,” painting a frighteningly realistic picture of World War III erupting at the end stages of the Cold War.
Army General gives not only you detailed insights into our five campaigns but also how we set out to create them. A great sneak peek into WARNO’s development.
Operations give you an in-depth view of how we designed Operations, the scripted scenarios on specific noteworthy battles in our war scenario, and how they are best played!
Divisions. An exhaustive list of all WARNO”Vanilla” and ”Gold”Divisions including historical tidbits, arsenal and unit descriptions, advantages and disadvantages, and how to deploy each battlegroup’s armed forces.
Pre-Order of the future NORTHAG expansion which will include:
2 new Army General campaigns, 4 Operations, 10 new Divisions including new nations such as NATO’s Belgium, the Netherlands and Warsaw Pact’s Poland.
This DLC will be priced at $24.99 / 24,99€ on release.
Pre-Order of the future SOUTHAG expansion, bringing:
2 new Army General campaigns, 4 Operations, 10 new Divisions including new nations such as NATO’s Canada, Spain and Warsaw Pact’s Czechoslavakia.
This DLC will likewise be priced at $24.99 / 24,99€ on release.
Two Nemesis DLCs:
This will be the first two WARNONemesis DLC, a popular mini-DLC series concept we introduced in Steel Division2. The idea behind the Nemesis DLC is that every once in a while, we give the community the option of which set of divisions should be developed next. We typically present three different pairs, after which you will vote on your preferred option!
Like Steel Division 2, the first Nemesis DLC will be predetermined (to be developed quicker). Nemesis: Air Assault will feature two new air assault divisions: the iconic U.S. 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and the Afghanistan War veterans of the Soviet 56-ya OG Desantno-Shturmovaya Brigada.
The second Nemesis #2 DLC will be the first DLC to be voted on by the community, as described above.
A Nemesis DLC will be priced at $4.99 / 4,99€.
WARNO Ranked Highlights
We wanted to give you an insight into how WARNORanked has changed from its Early Access days to its official Season 1.
No surprise here, but WARNO’sRanked “Pre-Season” has come to an end. First, we wanted to thank all the players for their valuable feedback and commitment to be the absolute best on the competitive battlefields of WARNO’s World War III. Many a daring commander has stepped into the Ranked arena to prove their mettle, some more successful than others.
Thanks to all of you playing Ranked while WARNO was in Early Access, we managed to improve and beef up our ranking system. But there is more: through all the battles, we saw some rather impressive members of the community ruling supreme (in their own unique way). Let’s do a big shout-out to some of our talented commanders:
Fortitude Fence: With a very distinctive aerial opening game, this player has established himself as the true specialist of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.
avrg blob enjoyer: The nickname doesn't lie; this commander excels with NATO’s 5. Panzerdivision and has demonstrated a remarkable mastery of the strategy in which quantity has a quality of its own.
StoBez: A versatile player who has made a fine comeback at the end of the Pre-Season.
Honorable Mentions
Tmanplays: stayed in the Top 10 even when playing with less-powerful divisions - and did so in extraordinarily good spirits.
Yukipaw: Winner of the "live-lav-love-1" tournament organized by the WarYes community. This commander has beaten several top players in the current Top 3. Congrats!
Ranked Meta-Analysis
So, which division came out on top in WARNO’s Pre-Season Ranked? The meta was dominated by the fast and agile paratrooper divisions, in particular NATO’s French 11e Division Parachutiste and the American 82nd Airborne Division. These battlegroups offered a gameplay that was straightforward and rapid, based around the Forward Deployment mechanic, allowing players to advance fast and far, set up quickly, and resist long enough to win. Not the most inspiring of strategies.
In WARNO’s Season 1 Ranked we remedied this by making some corrections to the gameplay and underlying map design. WARNO is a game about combined arms, including mechanized warfare, and we wanted the heavier divisions such as the American 3rd Armored Division or the Soviet 79-ya Gv. Tank. to have a better fighting chance. However, we didn’t want an overpowering “tank meta” that isn’t always fun. Game design is an exercise of juggling systems and finding the right nuanced balance!
Looking Ahead
Season 1 is only the beginning. Keep sending your feedback and suggestions, as many more improvements will come to WARNO Ranked Season 2 and beyond. In the meantime, join the competitive fun and see who can claim themselves to be the top commander in WARNO Ranked. May the best strategies triumph!

Let’s go to war!
That’s it for this week’s DevBlog. We’ll keep you up to date with all the latest happenings as soon as they hit the ground. Be sure to tune in next week as we’ll start diving into the new Nemesis DLC, Nemesis: Air Assault.
WARNO has officially launched out of Early Access. Muster your forces and get ready for battle! The time is now to lead your chosen units to victory on the late Cold War battlefields of WARNO’s World War III.
WARNO’s launch will turn the page on two full years of development. It is the closing of a chapter - only for a new one to open. We will continue to develop, improve, and create new content for WARNO, including major new expansions, nations, divisions, units, Nemesis DLC, and much more!
Note that WARNO Gold is not available due to unseen last-minute technical hiccups. More information below, but we are working on getting this deluxe variant of WARNO up and running as soon as possible!
WARNO’s Early Access
WARNO has been in Early Access for a little over two years. It is easy to forget all the features, the many divisions, the number of Operations, Army General campaign, the multitude of milestones, and update patches. So, after two years in Early Access, here is an infographic on WARNO’s official release.
Over 1000 units, expertly researched, modeled and voice-lined.
6 Nations: the United States, West Germany, the United Kingdom, and France for NATO, the Soviet Union, and East Germany for the Warsaw Pact playable in multiplayer and Skirmish, plus Belgium in Army General only.
Extensive Tutorials and a full range of Skirmish, Multiplayer and Cooperative modes.
WARNO Gold
Now, for WARNO Gold which is, as you correctly guessed, missing in action. Unfortunately, while we moved mountains, we were unable to have the Steam page for this deluxe version of WARNO ready for launch. Behind the scenes, we are very busy making sure it will be operational as soon as possible.
When WARNO Gold is available, the option for Early Access owners to upgrade to Gold with a healthy discount will be present.
Once again, apologies from the whole Eugen team.
EA Pack
For Early Access owners, automatically and freely available, a special EA Pack. This DLC contains divisions added as a “thank you” for your continued support during WARNO’s development:
The EA Pack contains 5 “extra” divisions:
The ”Berlin” divisions: NATO’s Berlin Command and Warsaw Pact’s Berliner Gruppierung and 6-ya Gvardeyskaya Motostrelkovaya Brigada.
Plus NATO’s U.S. 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) and the Warsaw Pact’s Soviet 27-ya Gvardeyskaya Motostrelkovaya Diviziya.
With WARNO’s official launch out of Early Access, this EA Pack will be made available as a DLC for $9.99 / 9,99€.
WARNO Launch Update
WARNO’s launch out of Early Access means a host of updates, improvements and bug fixes. Ranked replay has been reset as well. What else can you expect?
Artillery rework with some notable changes, including:
Dispersion spread adjustments for mortars, howitzers, and MLRS units.
Updated tooltips, more straightforward UI text, new weapons, and other descriptions.
And more …

Get Ready! WARNO's Launch is Imminent
Prepare for combat, commander!
WARNO’s launch out of Early Access is just around the corner. D-Day is 23rd of May!
We are very busy adding the finishing touches to WARNO, but we did encounter some hiccups along the way (see below, first thing). We can reveal that we have already started working on updating some of the next vehicle models and - of course - a release date patch (more details further below).
Let’s check things out.
WARNO Gold Delays
As many of you in the community have already (correctly) surmised, we are having some issues with WARNO’s Gold Steam page. This won’t affect WARNO’s launch this coming Thursday, May 23rd. However, there might be a high chance that the Gold page won’t be able to go live before release, or even on launch day. Yes, we know, for all of us, this is very far from ideal. This continued tussle to get the Gold Steam page online is the reason why this DevBlog was delayed last week.
But not to worry - flexibility is key on the battlefield. We are working on fixing this issue ASAP. Of course, while the page might be delayed, we stick to our promise. Early adopters WARNO (with ownership of our game in Early Access) will be able to update to the Gold version with a healthy discount.
From the whole Eugen team, our sincere apologies for this inconvenience. When we have more information, we’ll let you know first thing!
Some updates
With WARNO’s launch out of Early Access, expect a host of updates, bug fixes, and other improvements coming to the game. Such as?
Artillery rework with some notable changes, including:
Howitzers deal slightly more damage but will have a lowered Rate of Fire across the board.
Dispersion spread adjustments for mortars, howitzers, and MLRS units.
Updated tooltips, more straightforward UI text, new weapons, and other descriptions.
And much more …
Note: we will reset the Ranked play with WARNO’s official launch. One further unfortunate warning: due to the game’s launch, old saves and replays will be invalidated.
T-55 updates
So, the older-generation T-55 has received a facelift in the Eugen workshop. There will be better textures, updated modeling, new ejectable elements (for when the tank is hit or explodes) such as crates and even the turret, and a new dynamic top-mounted machine gun, etc. This update will have a direct effect not only on the examples fielded by the East Germans but also… the future Polish Army, which was a major user (and manufacturer) of the T-55.
EA Pack
We want to ensure everything regarding WARNO’s launch is clear to all players - veterans and new ones alike.
Available for all Early Access owners of WARNO, automatically and free, a special EA Pack. This DLC contains divisions added as a “thank you” for the community’s continued support during WARNO’s development. Instead of waiting until the game’s official launch to gift these free divisions, we decided to already give them to our players beforehand.
EA Pack
The EA Pack contains 5 “extra” divisions:
The ”Berlin” divisions: NATO’s Berlin Command and Warsaw Pact’s Berliner Gruppierung and 6-ya Gvardeyskaya Motostrelkovaya Brigada.
Plus NATO’s U.S. 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) and the Warsaw Pact’s Soviet 27-ya Gvardeyskaya Motostrelkovaya Diviziya.
After WARNO’s official launch out of Early Access, this EA Pack will be made available as a DLC for $9.99 / 9,99€.
SD Guild New Tournaments
As Eugen, we wholeheartedly support our games’ community with these amazing initiatives. But please note, that the following tournaments are not organized by us.
With the launch of WARNO, the SD League is ready to push WARNO’s competitive scene to the next level. There are two major tournaments coming up in June and July.
WARNO League Super Tournament 1.0 This tournament will kick off 2 weeks after WARNO’s release on the 1st and 2nd of June. The format will be a 2-day Single Elimination Tournament filled with intense, fast-paced action. Sign-up info and rules can be found on this dedicated page.
WARNO League SEASON 1 This long-form tournament, based on the well-tested Steel Division 2 League, will be open to all players of any skill level. Up to 64 players will be put into 4 skill levels, allowing us to organize fair matches for everyone. No matter if you are newbie or a grizzled WARNO veteran, you can expect some good, fun games.
The League will be persistent with future Seasons, with top players being promoted (and those who are faring less well, relegated) similar to European football leagues. More information, including a sign-up form can be found here.
Until the WARNO’s launch
That’s it for this very last WARNO DevBlog still in Early Access.
