Wilford: Deep Underground

Larger than normal update

I've been working hard on the game. As such there are some big changes in this update:

  • Improvement in how graphics are rendered
  • Instead of managing settings (volume etc.) on the title screen this is now done by calling up a menu. You do this by pressing Q. You can do this both on the title screen or while playing.
  • Cosmetic changes to the title screen. Added an encouragement to sending feedback, and an explanation on the controls.
  • Gems now breakable dirt now spawn again. They were gone with the last update due to working on the new algorithm.
  • The timer during play now shows a clock icon instead of just "S".
  • Probably other minor things.

Better randomly generated levels

I've implemented a new way for levels to be generated. They look much more organic now, and will become more and more complex as you progress through the game.

You can now also press Escape to exit the game.

UI stuff

Added a basic UI for the level screens, just to test functionality.

Collectable gems, new music and bug fixes

  • The gems can now be collected again
  • Draft of new music for planet 1. I want the music in the first map to be more upbeat, and get more and more serious as the game progresses
  • Fixed some bugs where too many sounds were being played at once when breaking stuff, causing lag

Shiny gems

I've adjusted the physical placement of Wilford in the physical world a little - though hardly noticeable.

I've also made it so the gems you need to pick up are very clear and shiny. They can't be picked up just yet though.

Intro story and other small details

  • First draft of an intro story is now in the game. For now it's just sketches but it will be fleshed out more in the future.
  • Improved the particle generation when a block is broken.

Minor updates

  • When you see the game in your library you will now see a fleshed out design of Wilford, courtesy of Justin Wood (justinwoodartist.com).
  • Updated the credits section
  • Changes to the dimensions of the game level. Currently working on the way levels are generated.
  • When you break a block containing a gem, you will see it appear and then slide to the bottom of the screen in a nice smooth way.
