First Egyptian Leader Reviewed - Bastet

BASTET’S PUNISHMENT

Prince Setne held the divine book of Thoth with a tight grip. His boat had finally reached Memphis after a long journey back from Naneferkaptah’s Tomb. He had traveled there to steal the ancient book and narrowly avoided eternal imprisonment in doing so.

What good is the book to anyone in a Tomb? Knowledge is to be pursued and obtained, he reasoned with a smile. The book had two spells in it, the first would let one charm the sky, the earth, the netherworld, the mountains, and the waters. To know what all the birds and reptiles are saying and see the fish of the deep. The second, whether one is in the Netherworld or in their earthly form, would make them witness Pre appearing in the sky with his Ennead of Nine, while the moon would be in its form of rising.

As they paddled towards the shore, Setne set his eyes on a woman walking along with her servants. The world around him slowly began to disappear, as all of his attention focused on her. Setne had never seen such divine beauty. There is no other like her in appearance, he thought. Once Setne laid eyes on her, he forgot all reason.

‘Make haste to that woman which has liberated my heart and inquire after her position!’ Setne ordered one of his servants. The man rushed over to where he was commanded. The woman was followed by Two Priests of Alabaster and two young maidservants along the shore.

‘What woman is this?’ asked Setne’s servant.

‘It is Taboubu, the daughter of the prophet of Bastet, mistress of Ankhtawi. She has come to worship Ptah, the Great God,’ replied the maid.

The servant returned to Setne and told him of the maid’s reply.

‘Go tell them I am Setne Khamwas, the son of a Pharaoh, and I will give Taboubu ten pieces of gold to spend an hour with me. If she has woes, I would heal them. I would care for her and have her taken to a hidden place where none on earth shall find her,’ instructed Setne.

The servant caught up to Taboubu again. He stopped and conveyed Setne’s words, while the others listened. The young priestess turned to him with a coy smile dancing on her lips.

‘Go tell Setne that I am of priestly rank, not a low person. If he desires to do what he wishes with me, he must come to my house in Bubastis. My house has everything one needs and there, he can do what he wishes with me, without my acting like a low woman of the street,’ she replied gently.

The servant ran back to Setne and delivered the message.

‘That suits me just fine!’ Setne avowed and ordered the boat turned to Bubastis, which was still a day ahead. The servants and scribes plead to visit their families in Memphis, but Setne waved a hand in disregard. They were to make for Bastet’s city immediately.

***

Setne’s boat arrived in Bubastis with great haste. He came to the west of the suburb and found a majestic house with a wall around it, a garden to the north and a seat at its door.

The Prince walked inside the walls and a couple of priests quickly announced Taboubu, as she came down the steps of the great house and took Setne’s hand.

‘By the fortune of the house of the prophet of Bastet, mistress of Ankhtawi, I welcome you, Prince Setne Khamwas. It will please me greatly if you would take the trouble to come up with me,’ she said, as she led Setne up the stairs.

They arrived at the upper story of the house and walked through the doors. Setne had only seen such splendor in a Pharaoh’s Palace. The floor was adorned with precious stones, the walls and ceiling were covered in sacred writings and there were many couches, furnished with royal linen.

The servants shuffled back and forth. A golden cup was filled with wine and put into Setne’s hand. Incense was put on the brazier and ointment, of the kind for Pharaoh’s, was brought to him. He stared at Taboubu, never having seen anyone like her, intoxicated by her beauty.

‘May it please you to have something to eat?’ the priestess asked him.

‘I am not in the mood for food. Let us accomplish what we have come here for,’ replied Setne eagerly, moving closer to Taboubu.

‘I am of priestly rank, not a low person. If you desire to do what you wish with me, you must make for me a deed of everything belonging to you and offer it to me freely,’ she declared.

‘Send for a scribe!’ shouted Setne in reply, without so much as a thought, as his eyes devoured the priestess before him.

The scribe was brought at once. They made a deed for everything belonging to the Prince and he offered it to Taboubu freely. As she took the deed into her hands, a priest entered the room and bowed.

‘Your children are below,’ said the priest to Setne.

‘Then let them be brought up,’ he replied.

While they waited, Taboubu rose and began changing her garment of royal linen. Setna watched stupefied and his desire burned even brighter than before. He could wait no longer.

‘Taboubu, let me accomplish what I have come here for,’ he pled again.

‘I am of priestly rank, not a low person. If you desire to do what you wish with me, you must make your children subscribe to the deed. Do not leave them to argue with my children over your property,’ she prodded.

Setne’s children arrived and he had them sign the deed too.

‘Now, let me accomplish what I have come here for!’ he entreated once more.

‘I am of priestly rank, not a low person. If you desire to do what you wish with me, you must have your children killed. I would not have them fight with my children over your property,’ directed Taboubu.

‘Then let the abomination that came into your head be done to them,’ agreed Setne, his mind shattered by a maddening lust for Taboubu.

She clapped her hands and summoned a pair of guards with helmets shaped like the mantled heads of Lions, they unsheathed their swords and she had his children killed before him. Then she ordered them thrown from the window to the dogs and the cats. She turned back to the Prince and still saw naught, but yearning for her flesh.

‘Let us accomplish what we have come here for! Everything you wished for, I’ve done it all for you!’ he implored.

‘Come into my chambers,’ she purred, as she spun around and left the room.

He followed her into the next room, where she lay on a couch of ivory and ebony. The light was dim, but her features seemed to radiate in his eyes. He laid beside her and extended his arm, but as soon as his fingers touched her skin, she let out a scream and disappeared.

***

Setne awoke naked in the middle of the Pharaoh’s Palace with his member stuck in a clay pot, his body burning with pain. He looked around and saw the people laughing at his shame, but among them were his children and he cried with joy to see them live.

‘It is Naneferkaptah who has done it all to me!’ he hollered.

Setne looked upon the Pharaoh’s throne and saw Hatshepsut. On her right stood Taboubu, smiling mysteriously. On her left, he recognized Anuket, the woman of the Nile. He bowed his forehead to the floor.

Anuket walked forward and looked down at him with pity in her eyes. She placed a hand on his shoulder, cleansing the burning pain, then she walked back to the Pharaoh. Hatshepsut ordered clothes to be brought for him.

‘I have learned of your transgressions against the Gods, Setne,’ said Hatshepsut. ‘You have stolen what does not belong to you and treated a Goddess with disrespect. The Gods will punish you for eternity if you do not return the book and ask forgiveness from the divine Bastet.’

He put on the clothes that were brought for him and bowed again. Then just as his forehead touched the floor, a realization dawned on Setne, Taboubu wasn’t just a priestess of Bastet. She was Bastet herself. The Goddess of Justice had toyed with him like a mouse, humiliated him and made him experience the punishment that awaited, should he not appease the Gods.

‘I ask your forgiveness, Goddess Bastet, mistress of Ankhtawi, I lost my mind after gazing at your beauty and all my reason left me. I would do anything to atone,’ he said humbly.

‘Return the book to Naneferkaptah, its rightful owner, so he may watch over it until the world ends,’ ordered the Bastet.

‘Take it back with a forked stick in your hand and a burning brazier on your head, that is the only way you will get safe passage to the Tomb’ urged him Anuket.

He nodded and bowed again, then he bid the Pharaoh and the Goddesses good fortune and left to return the book of Thoth.

Update 33 - 0.7.1.0 - A Step Towards Something Bigger

While we are working on the mobile version of World of Myths, we found some time for a quick update with a few but major changes.

1. Fatigue will now deal 1 damage instead of 2 (Fatigue is the effect that occurs when you try to draw a card and your deck is empty)
2. Gameboard changed. We are doing this in an attempt to create a better identity for the game that is more grabbing at first sight and match better our artwork. The changes are also in a direction that will deliver a better mobile experience. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
3. New VFX!!! After years of struggles, we have finally found a partner we can work with and you can see the results of our combined efforts :)
4. You can play Draft Mode again :)
5. Initial setup for reconnecting. It has the following limitations, that will be removed with the next update:

  • If you close the Client during a game, and re-open it within 60 seconds, you will be prompted to join your last game. If you reject to do so - the game will behave as if you have lost. If you confirm - you will get back to your game.
  • This only works after restarting the client. If you lose connection during a game - simply restart your client to reconnect. With the next update, we will upgrade it to trigger automatically during a game in which you've lost a connection so you don't have to restart.
  • This feature can be used if your game has frozen.
  • !!! IMPORTANT !!! The Client can correctly restore in about 65% of the game states at the moment. We will make that number 100% with the next update. If the game does not restore correctly, try to play a card or do some actions, then restart the Client to re-join again.
  • The feature will NOT work if the state is mulligan and if you are asked to choose a unit to kill for the middle temple. If you lose connection during these phases, you will just have to wait for the timer to trigger and pass your turn.
  • Please be patient. We will work on this feature for the next couple of days until we make it work perfectly.

Update 32 - 0.7.0.2 - The Game Changer

This is our first update where we change major elements of the workflow of the game. Most of the changes are based on data that we gathered for the past months and issues raised by the community.

The goal of all those changes is to make the game more dynamic, attractive and understandable for new players.

There are upcoming major changes that will completely revamp each Mythology. For more information on that, you can join us for our dev stream on 13th Dec 8PM GMT on Twitch.

Without further ado, here are the changes coming with this update:
1. Side temples no longer grant card draw.
2. A new core mechanic is introduced in the game - "Boon Tokens". When a player commits to attack, they will get 3 Boon Tokens. Once the player has 5 Boon Tokens, they will draw a card. The leftover Boon Tokens carry over after the reset. We plan to add cards that interact with Boon Tokens in the near future.
With these changes we try to address the issue where one of the players can put constant pressure on their opponent mainly supported by the draw of the side temples.
3. Up until now "Your Turn" began with the start of your Defense. As this was confusing for veteran players coming from other games, we are changing this. "Your Turn" now starts with your attack. At the moment this will mainly affect when a small number of cards trigger.
To add further clarification we have added visual indication, similar to the Your Turn label, that will indicate both the Defense and Your Turn (Attack) parts of the round.
4. Defenders no longer exhaust when declared for battle. This change greatly increases the speed of the game while also making it friendlier for new players. Now units will only be exhausted by card effects and summoning sickness.
5. Player units are readied at the end of their turn. (Previously at the start of player's turn, his opponent's units were readied)

6. Added visual indication of Endurance that will be lost during battle (it turns red)
7. Added search option in the deckbuilder. This will search in the card name and effect text.
8. Added Christmas Spirit assets in preparation for our Christmas offer
9. Setup server and Client to support Steam DLCs

Some Card Changes:
1. Corinthian Phalanx
Old: "Wing: Ready after your defense."
New: "Wing: When this unit's Power is increased, give the unit on the right 1 Power."
2. Ares
Old: "Pedestal: At the start of your turn, your left flank unit gains 2 Power and the adjacent unit loses 1 Power.\nYour left flank unit dies if it does not participate in battle this turn."
New: "Pedestal: At the start of your turn, your left flank unit gains 2 Power. That unit dies if it does not attack this turn."
Ares Challenge updated

With those changes, it would be a perfet time for you to revisit Leaders and cards that didn't see so much play.

Join us this Friday to discuss all those changes and be the first to have a look at all the changes that will give a better identity to the Norse Mythology.

Update 31 - 0.7.0.1 - Balance Update

This is a small part of the balance changes we are working on.
At the moment most units and spells between Mythologies can be directly compared which breaks the faction uniqueness.
For example, Norse units should generally have more Power and less Endurance. Greek units should have less power, but more powerful effects.
This Balance update does not directly make changes in that direction but it's a preparation for it. With the future Balance changes, we want to address each Mythology identity.

The King is Dead, Long Live the King - the HUGE update

Our latest update had so many changes packed up, that it deserves its own blog post. We added so many new things and improved others that we even referred internally to it as WoM 2.0. We are saying goodbye to our beloved Hourglass on the main menu. You've been a great friend Hourglass!

Next Stop - Egypt

Even though the update is exciting and fantastic, there's something even more excitinger and fantasticker (totally real words) just around the corner! Thanks to the community vote, the next Mythology joining us will be the Egyptian one!

The Egyptian Mythology will come with 4 new playable Leaders. We will start releasing more information on them and their playstyle in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned!

But that is not all! No, no, sir! A wild new spell type has appeared! The Upgrade spell type! These spells can target only Temples and will grant both positive and negative continuous effects, that will persist, as long as the Temple stands!

The Egyptian Mythology are secretly hidden masters of the Upgrade spell type and will utilize it to its full potential, once they've been released in mid-January! And yet, if you're already eager to add the Egyptians to your collection, the Egyptian Mythology Pre-Order bundles, are available in the in-game Store now!

The HUGE Update - Why?!

WoM 2.0 brings not only huge changes to the game's menu UI, but also improvements to many of the progress systems! Let's go through the reasons for each change, starting with the main menu:

When we first started working on World of Myths, one of our main UI design pillars was immersion. We wanted every bit of the UI to be part of the story and to make sense. We used the Hourglass (used to travel back in time and help the Old Gods) as a “Seed”, or a starting point and built our UI around it. Each grain of sand in the Hourglass was a card that you can collect. You could zoom in the sand and see your collection of cards. You could break a Card Pack in a mechanism below the Hourglass to charge it with new grains of sand a.k.a. cards. Your profile was a drawer in the upper part of the Hourglass and so on... Everything felt natural and we spent a lot of time brainstorming and making the whole thing look as it did. So if everything was so great – why change it? There are three main reasons that made us reconsider:

  1. We tried hard but couldn't get to the quality level of the main screen we wanted. We didn't have the internal resources and couldn't find the right partner to work with.
  2. Immersive UIs are extremely limiting. Every time you want to add a new piece to the UI, you're faced with the challenge of finding the correct spot for it, make it fit, and after a while, there are no more spots to be found. Even some of our competitors, that use Immersive UIs, struggled to work with them, although they have multiple times more resources than us.
  3. Mobile. We've designed every piece to be mobile-friendly from day one and our extensive tests with the mobile prototypes have shown that the immersive UI in its current state would be barely usable.

The New King

And here it is, your brand new home screen:

You will now get to enjoy the image of your favorite Leader extended to its full glory. The image will change automatically based on your most played Leader recently.

Profile

We are adding a proper Player Profile screen accessible from the (currently) Chubby Stone-Eater icon on the top left of the screen. We'll be introducing more icons for you to choose from as we progress! You can now check your stats and performance like Total Wins, Wins per Mythology, as well as your recent games – your opponent, the Leader they played and the winner of the match.

A big part of that screen is the Player Experience bar. We are removing the separate Mythology Reputation from the game and your current progress will be merged into Player Experience. If you have missed any unique rewards on the way - like a Card Back, those will be added to your account. We believed Mythology Reputation was going to be a vital part of the engagement with the game and bring a sense of identity for each player. It turned out that most of the time it is confusing and set limitations to players. At the end of the day, we moved to the already proven model of Player Progress Experience.

The maximum Player level that you can get at the moment of this writing is 100.

Myths Pass

We are extremely excited to present our brand new feature - the Myths Pass! Now you will gain even more rewards while playing.  Here's how it works:

  • As you destroy enemy temples you will get points.
  • One destroyed temple is 1 point. A win will give you 3 points. (Concede and Leader kills count as 3 points as well)
  • Progressing between Myths Pass levels requires 12 points.
  • Your first win of the day will grant double points.
  • The total number of Myths Pass levels is 30. After that, you will get 50 Gold per win up to a total of 1000.
  • There are 2 versions of the Myths Pass - a Free one and a Mythical. The Mythical upgrade costs $6.99 and gives x10 value of rewards. It works retroactively. (If you already have reached a specific level, all previous rewards will be granted). Owners of the Mythical Upgrade will also get all Free rewards.

As this is our first iteration of a Battle Pass, we are eager to hear your feedback and improve on the next one!

Quests and Daily Login

We've kept the daily Quests the same, but we've also added a Daily Login reward! The progress of the Daily Login rewards will not be reset if you miss a day and the rewards will loop after day 7.

Play

The ranked play was another system in World of Myths that required our attention. So far you were climbing different ladders with each Mythology. We thought that this will let players experiment more freely with decks that are not from their main mythology and lead to more diversity. Again it proved that's not the case and instead, it was confusing and had a negative effect on the experience. We have now unified all ladders into one single ladder. All players will keep their highest ranking and get rewards for all secondary mythologies they have ranked!

We are also adding the Grand Master rank into the game, which is an infinite level above the Master rank. There will be small rank drops/resets every month and larger ones every 3 months when the seasons will end.

Leaders

As we are removing the Mythology Reputation, a new question arises - "How would a player unlock Leaders then?" Question no more! We are now introducing Leader Challenges. They will act like small puzzles you'll need to solve. To unlock a Leader you have to complete all 3 of his challenges. As a starter, only the first out of 3 challenges will be scripted but we will improve the other 2 on the go. Those Challenges will also add the next bits of Lore of World of Myths, so read carefully :)

The active Mythology will now be chosen from the Leader's screen and will be used only for Daily Quests and Draft Mode.

Cards

You will now see 8 cards instead of 6 on the Cards screen and the filters were moved to a separate modal! We've also added a new resource to the game - "Glitter Vails" that will be used for creating animated cards!

We have removed one of the steps of the deck creation process and added a short description on each Leader to give some brief intro to the Leader playstyle for new players.

Collection

We are adding a brand new screen called Collection. You can open your Card Packs, see your Achievements and customize all visuals in the game from here! We have improved the skins screen and now you will see your favorite skins bigger and better. You will now be able to customize the Temples and Trophies you play with!

We have also added a short description and info on each skin and title you can use.

Final Thoughts

There are many other small changes and improvements. We will continue to work hard and improve the new menu UI. Feel free to share your feedback. We hope you enjoy the changes as much as we do!

The next updates will be focused on balance and game changes. We will also be adding a set of new cards by the end of the year. Meanwhile, you can head up to our new Store and check the Pre-Order offers we have on Egypt.
