Update 1.20.1: Crew Improvements

Commanders!

After the announcement of previous changes and based on the Common Tests results where we suggested our changes to the crew perk system, we received many questions and comments from you. Many of you shared your feedback about potential issues with the new system. We would like to thank all active players again for taking part in the future of World of Tanks. Your feedback is what helps us work out different ideas and understand which direction development should take.

In Update 1.20.1, the Crew Perk System Will Remain Unchanged

The results of the first Common Tests clearly showed us that the suggested changes to the crew perk system required serious improvements. We took into account the point that this new system will increase the skill gap between newcomers and World of Tanks veterans with experienced crews.

As a result, at this stage, we have decided to keep the current crew perk system without changing familiar mechanics. We won't add new perks or rework existing ones in Update 1.20.1.

No action will be required from you with regard to the crew perk system after Update 1.20.1. You won't need to train new perks, adapt to reworked ones, or retrain your crews—in the upcoming update, all current mechanics will remain unchanged. For example, Firefighting will still be available for the crew members of all major qualifications.

However, those improvements that will help make the entire system more comfortable and useful will be released in Update 1.20.1. We will also continue working on updating the crew perk system, taking into account your feedback and data gathered during Common Tests. We will need time to address the issues with more complex aspects of this feature.

For now, here's a summary of the crew improvements that will be released in Update 1.20.1.

Perk Training and Major Qualification Level

There will no longer be skills in the updated system—they will become perks. In the new system, all perks become active immediately once you start training them, even when trained to 1%. At first, their effect will be minimal, but the more you train a perk, the more its effectiveness increases. The same applies to Brothers in Arms—even if only one crew member has the perk trained, the entire crew will reap the advantages of the bonus.

The Mentor perk has become more convenient: Its effect now also works for the Commander.

Additionally, the major qualification level now affects almost all perks (excluding Brothers in Arms). The higher it is, the stronger the perk effect.

Combat Interface for Perks With Situational Effects

When updating the crew perk system, we tried to make it not only more comfortable to use but also more informative. To do so, we added separate icons to the combat interface to display perks with a situational effect.

The situational effect triggers and provides a bonus only when the conditions to activate the effect are met in battle. For example, some perks with such an effect are Adrenaline Rush (accelerates gun loading if the vehicle has under 10% of its hit points left) and Jack of All Trades (enables the Commander to replace knocked-out crew members).

Each time the effect activates, the corresponding perk icon will appear on the combat interface. This way, you'll see right away that the perk has triggered. You can enable and disable the display of perk icons in the game settings.

Interface Rework: Clearer and More Informative

To make the crew perk system even more informative, we’ve also reworked some in-game interfaces.

  • In the characteristics window of any vehicle in your Garage, you'll see how all current perks affect these characteristics. Now you will be able to understand more clearly how particular perks improve your vehicles.

  • Perk descriptions and pop-up tooltips in the Garage, as well as descriptions of the directives for crew, have been reworked to become clearer and more informative.
Finally, an enjoyable bonus: There will no longer be a penalty to the earned Crew XP if you finish a battle with injured crew members.

Once again, thank you for participating in the Common Tests and for sharing your feedback. We look forward to better engagement with you through future developments!

We continue our consistent work on improving the perk and crew system to make them more versatile, useful, and convenient for all players. The listed changes lay a strong foundation for other crew improvements that we will announce in the future. Stay tuned!

New Japanese Tech Tree: Tank Destroyers!

Greetings, Commanders! We’re introducing six brand-new Japanese tank destroyers for you to pursue!

Branching off from the Tier IV Type 1 Chi-He, this new line of the Japanese Tech Tree extends all the way to Tier X. It includes the first upper-tier Japanese TDs in the game, now available for you to command. But before we take a look at the six mighty vehicles coming your way in Update 1.20.1, let's briefly describe their gameplay concept and key features.

Japanese Tank Destroyers: Strong All-Rounders

The gameplay of these new vehicles can hardly be considered unique. At the same time, however, they are noticeably different from both heavily armored assault TDs and sniping "glass cannons."

Firepower

These Japanese tank destroyers are versatile all-rounders with an optimal balance of frontal armor, decent firepower, and adequate mobility. They feature mighty high-caliber guns with good accuracy and aiming time. Their damage per shot is good—but certainly not as good as that of the best damage dealers. However, they have enough DPM to seriously hurt their opponents at both medium and short distances, providing support to allied heavies.

Most TDs in the branch have AP shells that serve as both standard and special ammunition with high armor penetration values, as well as good HE shells.

Armor and Dynamics

The frontal armor of the Tier VII–IX vehicles is thick enough (in some zones) to withstand some direct fire from same-tier opponents, but it’s not enough to operate as frontline brawlers. The only exception is the Tier X mastodon, whose armor allows you to confidently play on the first line. But even this mighty warrior needs to hide its vulnerable lower glacis plate using terrain irregularities.

The top speed of all the vehicles is average, while the reverse speed is great, relative to their frontal armor. However, keep in mind that you won’t be able to react quickly to changes in battle and switch flanks, so you need to plan your routes ahead.

Summary

Most of these new Japanese tank destroyers are strong "midfielders," able to play both aggressively in attack and confidently in defense. They have medium armor, adequate mobility, and decent firepower, which makes them versatile and reliable choices for both novice and experienced Commanders.

Now—back to the branch composition.

The Ho-Ni III and the Type 95 Ji-Ro

The first tank in the line is the Ho-Ni III. If you’ve enjoyed the German Tier V StuG III Ausf. G, playing the Ho-Ni III will feel familiar—but with an even more powerful and accurate gun. This vehicle lacks armor, so you should use ambush tactics to maximize your lifespan and thus contribute to your team’s victory.

Next up: the Tier VI Type 95 Ji-Ro. Its gameplay is similar to its predecessor's but with a few modifications. The Type 95 Ji-Ro boasts high concealment values and a view range of 350 m. But due to the almost complete lack of armor, it will have to spend most of its lifetime in ambushes. The closest analog of this vehicle is the Soviet SU-100.

Tier VII–IX Vehicles: More Armor and Versatility

Starting from Tier VII, the gameplay concept of these Japanese TDs changes—they get sturdy frontal armor and even more respectable damage per shot!

The Chi-To SP has vulnerable zones in the frontal projection—big Commander’s cupolas, lower glacis plate—but it can already absorb standard shells from same-tier opponents. Try to use the terrain and turn your vehicle’s hull to decrease the impact angle, thus boosting your armor effectiveness and ricochet chances.

The Chi-To SP is maneuverable and can confidently follow heavy tanks carrying either a 75 mm or 105 mm cannon with decent damage per shot.

Roll out to the upper tiers in the Tier VIII Ho-Ri 2! This vehicle embodies the best qualities of Japanese TDs and balances its solid frontal armor with a hefty gun that has 400 HP of damage per shot.

The Ho-Ri 2 has two cupolas, one of which is at a very acute angle towards the enemy in front of you, so it won't be easy to penetrate it. There are several other vulnerable zones in the lower and upper glacis plates, but only the best Tier VIII guns can penetrate them.

The Ho-Ri 2 will perform brilliantly as an aggressive support vehicle from the second line of fire. The vehicle’s good reverse speed (15 km/h) makes it easier to roll out, take a shot, and withdraw into cover so that enemies can’t zero in on your weak spots.

Another standout support vehicle waits for you in Tier IX. The Ho-Ri 1 is a serious damage dealer armed with a fearsome 149 mm gun with 650 HP of damage per shot—but a rather long (15.5 s) reload time. It has a big lower glacis plate that you’ll need to hide, but your opponents will have serious problems penetrating the upper part of the cabin. With its notable armor penetration values and adequate mobility, the Ho-Ri 1 has what it takes to be a true roving menace on the battlefield.

The Ho-Ri 3: The Crown Jewel of the New Line

All the hallmarks of the Japanese TD line culminate in the Ho-Ri 3. Its effective frontal armor is up to 300 mm, and its durability is 2,000 HP. The only true weak spot on the front of this mastodon is the lower glacis plate. The average damage per shot is 700 HP, and the standard AP shell has 305 mm of penetration, which is enough to bring down even Tier X tanks with a few shots.

Its huge profile and low camouflage values mean that staying at the back is not an option. The vehicle’s top speed is 35 km/h, and this is quite enough to arrive at key positions about the same time as allied heavies and provide them with significant fire support.

The parameters displayed are valid for the vehicle with each crew member trained to 100% major qualification level. Some vehicle characteristics can be further improved with the Commander's bonus to major qualification level, crew perks, as well as special in-game items.

[expand type="details"]

[/expand]
The Ho-Ri 3 can also be used as a mighty breakthrough vehicle, but use caution, since its lower plate is rather large. You should always make the most of the terrain, take advantageous positions, and turn your vehicle’s hull to decrease the impact angle.

Enjoy playing these versatile Japanese tank destroyers, Commanders!

Introducing: Collections

Commanders!

We are introducing a new game feature, called Collections. It will enhance the feeling of accomplishment you get from playing through Battle Pass Seasons, and help you immerse yourself further into their atmosphere and lore. Collections will also provide you with immediate bonus rewards and serve as mementos of your battle feats.

The first Collection will appear during Season X of Battle Pass, and Seasons XI and XII will feature their own Collections as well. You will be able to access the Collection from the Battle Pass screen.

The Collection screen will be added in Update 1.20.1, and all Collection Elements and any extra Tokens you have earned by that time will be credited.

The Battle Pass Season X Collection

The Season X Collection is based on the characters’ battle diaries, which feature notes, hand-drawn sketches, and photographs. These Collection Elements will help you learn more about the heroes’ backgrounds and their adventures in faraway lands.

Throughout Season X, obtaining certain Stage rewards (both Base and Improved) furthers your Collection progress. These rewards include:

  • 2D styles
  • Completed progressive styles
  • Decals
  • Crew members
  • A medal
As you advance through the Collection, you are awarded Elements, which are narrative rewards that give more depth to the story of Season X. These include:

  • The personal belongings of each hero
  • Detailed descriptions of each progressive style
  • Dossiers on the heroes
  • Secret correspondences and photos

The Season X Collection: Extra Rewards

There are 13 Elements in the Season X Collection. Reaching a certain number of Collection Elements will earn you additional rewards:

  • 7 Elements: 1 Token
  • 9 Elements: ×6 Ode to Armor decals (pictured)
  • 11 Elements: 1 Token
  • 13 Elements: 1 Token

Thus, completing Season X with an Improved Pass will get you 3 additional Tokens, on top of the 21 Tokens from Progression rewards, allowing you to purchase the first of the two new Tier IX reward vehicles, the BZ-58-2 .

Completing Season X will earn you 10 Collection Elements, and you can get another 3 Elements with an Improved Pass. If you don't manage to finish your Collection in the current Season, you can still do so in the following Seasons, but please note that extra Tokens are only credited for gathering Collection Elements during their respective Season.

We hope you enjoy the new Collections feature.

May every adventure of yours be worth remembering, Commanders!

[UPDATE] Onslaught Continues With the Season of the Crimson Griffin!

The new start date of Onslaught: Season of the Crimson Griffin is May 3. It will run until June 11.

Based on the Common Test results and your feedback, we've determined that the combat modifiers mentioned in this article will create a positive impact on combat dynamics and the effectiveness of role skills, and achieve our goal of enabling you to experiment with more vehicle choices and unconventional tactics.

Therefore, we will be including them in the upcoming Season of the Crimson Griffin, and will continue to monitor and make the necessary adjustments as the season progresses.

Spring has sprung, bringing Onslaught back to World of Tanks with even more thrilling battles and unique customization rewards, Commanders!

The Season of the Crimson Griffin: General Overview

After the debut Season of our new competitive mode, we took a short break to analyze your feedback and think about how to make Onslaught even more exciting. While we continue to develop this mode, we are ready to launch the Season of Crimson Griffin, running from May 3 through June 11.

In this Season, we want to introduce some improvements you've asked us to add to Onslaught. Also, we want to test several new mechanics aimed at making the Onslaught gameplay more diverse and enjoyable. And, of course, we want to provide you with your favorite competitive mode and let you enjoy glorious victories! You’ll also have a chance to get your hands on exclusive customizations that we’ve added to the reward pool.

In the meantime, we will continue to collect statistics and are working on the next Season with qualification battles, which will kick off in the fall of 2023. We’re preparing some cool stuff for you, so stay tuned!

More Diverse Tactics and Dynamic Battles!

Our aim is to introduce more variety and excitement to the Onslaught gameplay. To achieve this, we’ve reworked vehicle Role Skills. We’ll also be testing two special combat modifiers during the Common Test. But first things first.

Vehicle Role Skills Reworking

We’ve reworked several vehicle Role Skills in Onslaught. All vehicle role skills are now easier to charge. Additionally:

  • Skill cooldown time has been greatly reduced
  • Some skills are now available from the start of each battle
  • Some skills have changed the principle of work, for example, Inspire affects all allied vehicles on the battlefield
Considering the increased effectiveness of vehicle Role Skills in battle, in order to maintain the pace of combat, we want to test special combat modifiers that will be added to Onslaught during the Common Test period.

Combat Modifiers

Reworked vehicle Role Skills, as well as combat modifiers tested during the Common Test, will add more variety and excitement to the Onslaught gameplay. They will also allow you to try out more different tactics and maneuvers.

There will be two combat modifiers, as follows:

  • The HP pools of all vehicles eligible for Onslaught will be increased by 25%
  • Consumables cooldown time will be reduced from 90 seconds to 45 seconds

During the Common Test, Onslaught will feature two combat modifiers. They increase vehicles' HP pools and reduce the cooldown time of consumables. We will collect data and consider your feedback before deciding whether to make these mechanics permanent. If they are well received, they will be included in the upcoming Onslaught Season. However, if you don't find these modifiers useful, we will not introduce them.

Weekly Combat Missions

The Season of the Crimson Griffin brings two lines of rewards. The progression system of the first reward line remains unchanged and includes brand-new customization items that we’ve prepared especially for the Season of the Crimson Griffin. To grab these distinctive status symbols, you need to advance through the Ranked System.

[expand type="details"]

[/expand]
But in the second reward line, instead of progression for a certain number of victories, you will now have a system with a set of consecutive weekly combat missions.

With the start of the Season, five simple missions become available to you. All missions are completed consecutively, one after another, and for each completed mission, you will receive useful in-game rewards. At the end of the weekly period, your progress is reset, and a new set of the same missions with the same rewards will become available. The list of missions is updated on Monday.

After completing a set of five missions, you will receive one Lucky Chip, a special in-game currency. Earn Lucky Chips throughout the Season to grab the most valuable prizes of the second reward line: a brand-new progressive 2D style (also available in the first reward line), a universal Training Guide, days of WoT Premium Account, and other sweet goodies.

Your rewards for earned Lucky Chips will be credited automatically. Once you have a certain number of Lucky Chips, you will instantly receive a valuable in-game item.

Brand-New Customization Rewards

We’ve updated the first reward line, which includes unique status customization items. They are now in stunning crimson tones, echoing the name of this intermediate Season. In addition to the useful in-game goodies you can earn for completing weekly combat missions, you can also get your hands on the following:

  • Unique Dog Tag elements, such as Engravings and Backgrounds
  • Cool Griffin mastery badges for reaching the two elite ranks of Champion and Legend
  • A striking “The Last of the Griffins” stripe
  • A cool progressive 2D style: After you play your first battle in the mode, you will immediately receive Level I of this style. As you reach new ranks or significant achievements in a specific battle or series of battles, your style will gain new 2D elements. The maximum Level VII style with the most imposing camo is awarded when you make it to the Legend rank.

Starting this Season, you can apply this style to any vehicle in your Garage.

Map Rebalancing and Two New Battlefields

During the Update 1.20.1 Common Tests, we will be adjusting the positioning of Points of Interest on Onslaught’s maps to determine their optimal location. We've also added two new locales to the set of maps available for the Onslaught mode: Glacier and Airfield.

The locations of Points of Interest on all maps may change and will be finalized after the Update 1.20.1 Common Tests.

Super Platoons Limits

In the Season of Crimson Griffin, we’ll remove the limits on the difference between the highest and lowest Rating Points value when creating Super Platoons. You can now join your friends in Super Platoons without restrictions, regardless of the ranks and divisions in which you play. For example, if you fight in the Debutant rank, you can join a Super Platoon in the Gold rank.

We’re also aiming to adjust the matchmaker so that Super Platoons get matched against opposing Super Platoons in battle.

Minimap Pings and Voice Chat

Here’s another improvement based on your feedback: We are removing the limits on the number of pings on the minimap to make it easier for players in Super Platoons to coordinate their actions in battle. It will be more convenient for you to interact with the team. Solo Commanders will also receive an increased number of pings on the minimap.

We’ve also made a slight improvement to the voice chat. If you were in voice chat as a solo player at the end of a battle, you will remain in voice chat in the next battle.

Rental Vehicles and Battle Pass Points

You will be awarded rental vehicles (the WZ-111 model 5A, the E 50 Ausf. M, and the T110E4) at the start of the Season. They will remain on your account until the end of the Season and will be removed when it’s over.

These rental vehicles will be available only for the Onslaught mode. It will be impossible to enter Random Battles or other modes using these tanks.

You’ll also be able to earn Battle Pass Points when playing Onslaught.

Enjoy the Season of the Crimson Griffin, Commanders! And we’d love to hear your feedback to help us decide which changes Onslaught will feature in the next Season!

Roadmap Sneak Peek #2

Commanders!

The future is bright for World of Tanks, and we can promise tons of features and improvements to your favorite online tank game!

Back in February, we announced the Japanese TDs, dynamic objects, and more. Now, we're here to offer more exclusive sneak peeks into what's coming up over the next few months! Watch the video below to hear more from Michael Broek, Publishing Director for World of Tanks in Europe and America, and Senior Game Designer, Aleksandra Legenchenko.

This is the second Roadmap Sneak Peek video in our ongoing series, where we share our goals and objectives for the near future and let you know about any planned tests for features and mechanics.

We want to hear your thoughts. Your input is crucial as World of Tanks continues to evolve, so please share any of your suggestions or questions!

Stay up to date with our latest development plans, Commanders!

Update 1.20.1: WoT Plus and Crew System Revision

Commanders!

We would like to thank all those who participated in the Common Tests of the update, as your involvement has been instrumental in shaping the game’s future. Conducting public testing of updates before introducing them to the live game is a crucial step in this process, allowing us to collect reactions and gather feedback to create a better game for everyone.

Although Update 1.20.1 has introduced many new features and improvements, we have faced some challenges with two specific aspects of the update. WoT Plus will require some additional minor adjustments, while the Crew system will undergo more extensive changes. We are committed to addressing the issues raised by the community and ensuring that these features meet our high standards. Let’s dive into how we plan to accomplish this.

Changes to WoT Plus

Free demounting of “Improved Equipment,” the equipment type purchasable with bonds, was perceived as a bonus that would give subscribers an advantage. Our intention with WoT Plus is to provide subscribers comfort and convenience, not an upper hand in battles. Therefore, “Improved Equipment” will be excluded from the list of equipment that can be demounted for free with a WoT Plus subscription.

Changes to Crew Perks

The crew system has been an essential part of World of Tanks since its early days. It allows for fine-tuning a vehicle, boosting its best features, and mitigating shortcomings. These benefits stay with players as they advance through the tech tree, taking crews with them.

New perks and adjusting existing ones were meant to add more flexibility and diversity to the crew perks selection and make it more useful. However, this was negatively perceived as an increase in the disparity among the player base between competitive players, veterans with experienced crews, and new players. We do not intend to raise the number of perks needed to ensure that players can remain competitive during a battle in terms of vehicle performance.

As a result, we have made the decision not to introduce the new perks in their current state or proceed with the rebalancing of existing ones tested during the Common Tests.

Please note, there is no need for a 30-day promotion that allows you to reset crew perks for free or to credit 12 retraining orders to all players.

Quality-of-Life Improvements to the Crew System

The revamped Crew System introduces several quality-of-life updates that were well-received by the community due to their usefulness. Additionally, these updates provide us with a solid foundation for future enhancements to crew perks and crew progressions. Thus, Update 1.20.1 will implement the following changes:

  • Unifying perks and skills into perks that work from the start and become more effective as the level of major qualification increases. For example, the “Brothers in Arms” perk will start taking effect at 1%, even if only one crew member is trained in it.
  • Removing experience penalties for injured crew members.
  • Adding a battle interface for situational perks.
  • Providing clear descriptions of perks and their effects.
  • Displaying the effects of all perks in the vehicle characteristics widget.
We want to extend our appreciation for your continuous support and valuable feedback, which has empowered us to take an exciting next step with World of Tanks in Update 1.20.1. With a host of new features and enhancements, we believe that the game will be even more enjoyable for all players. Stay tuned to the portal for further details on the update's contents and our upcoming roadmap announcement outlining the planned content for later in 2023.

Thank you for being an integral part of the World of Tanks community, and we hope to see you soon on the battlefield!
