Greetings, Outlanders! It’s time for an update on WRATH, so let’s jump right into it.
We’ve got a variety of stuff that we’re ready to show: the cave area leading up to the first boss of WRATH, solid progress on the Brute – as well as a sneak-peak of the intro map.
Enjoy!
Behold the fiery path towards the Lady of Ascension…
Beset on all sides by the sizzling, boiling lifeforce of the earth. The subtle moonlight crowns the chapel beneath – all leading up to WRATH’s first boss fight, The Lady of Ascension, who presides over the arena beyond.
We recently got a lot of great work done on this area, take a look!
Enter: The Brute!
You’ve seen concepts of him, you’ve read about him – and here he is, the Brute! Now in-game, coded, textured, and currently being rigged for animation. If you’re not cautious, one slip-up is all this powerful foe needs to blast you back to your latest save point. We can’t wait to see you all try to tackle the challenges that lie ahead when we utilize this enemy to his fullest potential.
Welcome, Outlander...
… to WRATH’s intro map! Here’s a sneak-peak at our latest work on the very first map that players of the final release will meet when they jump into the violently somber world of WRATH. Recently, we’ve been adjusting and finalizing the environment and setpieces so you can traverse this landscape.
Beautifully serene, yet the first step on the Outlander’s quest for carnage…
In other news…
What else have we been up to, you ask? Well, besides the first boss’ map/arena, the Brute, and the intro map, here’s a number of other areas we’ve been working on over the past 14 days:
We’ve made progress on a variety of textures, for example different types of metal for the episode 3 maps
After a lot of grueling work, meshing on E2M1 is being finalized, ensuring that the map both looks and plays great.
E3M4 – a matrix of chambers and pathways – has seen solid progress on the area behind the blue-key door.
Our twisted combination of flesh and metal – the Keeper – is currently being textured, after which we’ll finalize coding and animation. Look forward to seeing it in action!
After a round of playtesting, we’ve made changes to E2M5 to improve the player experience of the map. For example, traversing the map is now less cumbersome, and certain rooms have received an upgrade in terms of content and layout.
Besides the visual update to the 1st boss’ map, we’ve also made progress on the breakable terrain in the boss arena. Better watch your step, Outlander!
The Intro Map is currently receiving some additional work, including sculpting of the terrain, the surrounding sea, and a secret area – as well as other fine-tuning.
E3M2. A hellish sewer; the putrid under-works of massive torture chambers. Chambers which are currently under-construction! E3M2 is on the receiving end of a ton of work – designing, placing and refining grotesque setpieces, a bucketload of meshing, you name it. We can’t wait to show you what this map is all about!
That’s it for this bi-weekly WRATH update. We hope you enjoyed the sneak-peaks and details we’ve decided to let loose. Stay tuned for more dev updates!
It's that time again: we have a bi-weekly update from WRATH. Last week, we participated at Realms Deep 2022, a digital event hosted by 3D Realms and Friends, filled with world premieres, special guests, interviews, and much more. If you didn’t catch it, you can still see the liveshow here.
Why are we telling you about this? Well, during this year’s Realms Deep, we shared a new trailer for WRATH! Chock-full of never-before seen weapons, enemies, areas – and progress on content we’ve already shared!
But perhaps even more importantly, the trailer specified our new release window for WRATH: Spring 2023. We know you’ve waited a long time. We can’t wait to share everything we’ve been working on. And now, we’re inching closer to the finish line. Thank you for your patience.
For this bi-weekly update, we’ll be ‘dissecting’ the trailer for you, and in the process, we’ll be sharing a bit more detail on some of the upcoming content for WRATH based on what we’ve decided to feature in the trailer. Of course, we won’t share everything there is to know about these upcoming features – but we will give you a brief description of what you’re seeing in the trailer.
The following content – and more – will be available when WRATH releases in Spring 2023.
NEW BOSS: THE LADY OF ASCENSION First up, it’s the Lady of Ascension; WRATH’s first boss. Dodge, weave and utilize the arena around this powerful foe to bring her to ruin using your arsenal and the skills you’ve honed throughout the first episode of WRATH.
NEW ENEMY: THE PROWLER You know that feeling when you see a spider? That creepy, crawly sense of unease? Worried that it might pounce at any moment – and even worse if it leaves your line of sight, even if just for a second? That’s the feeling we’re aiming for with The Prowler. The design of this particular monster is not for the faint of heart.
NEW WEAPON: THE CRYSTALLIZER One of three weapons showcased in the Realms Deep 2022 trailer – it’s an instrument of destruction; powered by crystal energy, it’ll sear through hordes of enemies at a time. Wanna make the most of this weapon? Here’s a tip: Try using the secondary fire on a flying enemy.
NEW WEAPON: THE MACE OF DEVASTATION Harness the souls of fallen enemies to your advantage with this powerful melee weapon. While slaughtering enemies, this weapon builds up charge – which you can then use to tear through anyone standing in your way. Truly a twisted end to these tormented souls.
NEW WEAPON: THE LANCE Boom. This powerful railgun puts a stop to even the most terrifying of foes. Complete with the option to re-direct enemy fire, this weapon adds even more variety to the Outlander’s loadout.
SNEAK-PEAK OF EPISODE 2 You’ve seen these crystalline environments before in our latest bi-weekly – and in the trailer, you’ll catch another glimpse of maps from Episode 2; all of which we’re currently stuffing with encounters, secrets, details, props – and all the action we can fit.
SNEAK-PEAK OF EPISODE 3 It’s brief, but if you take a close look, you’ll spot a few frames from Episode 3 – specifically E3M2 which we’re currently adding a ton of fleshy, gory detail to. Gruesome and awesome, we hope you’ll enjoy blasting through this disgustingly fun map.
IN OTHER NEWS… Of course, this is just what we included in the trailer. We’ve got a little bit more progress to share with you from the latest 14 days:
The Brute, a new enemy, recently had it’s low-poly model finished. It’s currently being textured with all the metallic and fleshy detail it so deserves.
A variety of flesh & bone environmental setpieces for E3M2 are in progress.
The Keeper, another new enemy, is currently being textured, with an emphasis on contrast between flesh and metal.
E3M4 is seeing good progress on an area that is accessible via a blue key.
A number of metallic environments, such as pipes, are being worked on; for example for E3M3.
Concepts have been worked on for “Demon Meat” and “Flesh Tendrils”
A variety of Episode 2 Light Fixtures have recently been modeled and textured. They are currently being tested in-engine, and will soon be used to detail a number of maps.
Another environmental detail, specifically a pulsing ray, was recently added to an Episode 2 map. It adds some great atmosphere.
A number of textures – for example rusty metal and flesh with symbolic scripples – was finalized.
That’s it for this bi-weekly WRATH update. We hope you enjoyed the trailer, and we are so looking forward to sharing everything with you in the spring of 2023. Stay tuned for more dev updates!

WRATH bi-weekly update - 09.12.2022
Hey guys, hope you’re all doing great. Two weeks down – and that means another peek into the work we’ve been putting in over the past 14 days (minus 4 days for weekends, of course).
We’ve got a lot of moving parts, some of which we’re ready to share progress on. So here’s a few select pieces with screenshots and a short description to go along:
Ancient Crystals take root in Episode 2
First up, we’re gonna show you some terrain for E2M1, the first map of episode 2. As part of the detailing for the map, we have these giant crystalline structures – which are both part of the look and feel of the map, but will also serve as the apparent origins of the local creatures. And rumor has it that someone even fashioned instruments of war from these powerful crystals...
Long story short, here’s a screenshot of the crystalline terrain (work-in-progress):
The Key to Victory
WRATH has doors. That much is true. But now, we also have proper keys! Color-coded to match specific doors, these keys will be used to unlock the variety of gates and mechanisms you’ll find throughout the game. Check out our latest progress in the screenshot below:
What does a level designer do?
Well, design levels of course. But more specifically, here’s what our level designers have been up to over the past two weeks:
- E2M1: New terrain with sandstone and crystals - E2M4: A variety of texture corrections - E2M5: The map’s layout is now ready for internal playtesting - E3M2: Organic terrain has been added; specifically flesh, organs and a variety of bone structures. Wonderfully grotesque. - E3M4: A disturbed, yet industrial look and feel is being developed with machinery, pipes and matching textures.
In other news…
What else have we been working on, you might be wondering? We can’t give everything away, but here’s a list of some other significant progress we’ve made in the last two weeks:
- Made progress on sound loops to new weapons - Created new textures for E2M4 and Episode 3 maps - Completed all skull props; for example, we re-scaled a few select skulls, finished tweaking pixel density to get it just right – and added gibs with proper physics. - Continued work on one of the new enemies. This particular enemy recently received a number of adjustments to its model, which is currently a work-in-progress. - Low Poly of the Brute enemy is now in progress, which means we’re making good head way on getting this enemy fully fleshed out and ready. - Concepts have been designed, drawn and modelled for “Demon Meat”
We are back from gamescom where we showcased WRATH at the 3D Realms booth and ready to share our biweekly development update with you! Here is what we have been working on during the last two weeks!
- Polishing new enemy's model, the Brute - Model for the Keeper enemy - Sound design work on the new weapons - Concepted lighting props - Modeled floral vines - Episode 3 texture and map detailing
It's time for another WRATH development update! Here is a short summary of what we have been working on:
- Making and applying textures for E3 - Mapping E2 and E3 levels - Implemented the Chalice of Lifeblood - Modeled, animated, and created special effects for the final weapon
Pictured: Chalice of Lifeblood, a bountiful healing item
Thank you very much for supporting us as we work hard on this game! Stay tuned for more WRATH news and updates!
