Pioneer Mode now added to Zelter Early Access!
With the new update to Zelter, both the appropriately named Challenge Mode and the endless Pioneer Mode are included in the game.
Pioneer mode comes with several important new additions:
Play at your own pace
Pioneer mode doesn’t have you racing against the clock (only against zombies, and starvation, and thirst, and potentially infection). You can take your time and gradually develop your shelter to stand up to zombie hordes. Even the evacuation helicopter is yours to call in when you feel ready.
Restore supplies
Essentials such as water won’t be easy to find - you must work to restore the infrastructure. Sources of water will start out broken when you enter a Pioneer Mode game, and it’s up to you to get the water running again. You aren’t the only one desperately in need of supplies. Those you rescue will need food, water and shelter just like you.
Rescue & recruit
In Pioneer mode managing the NPC survivors you rescue is one of your primary tasks. With their newly fleshed out backgrounds you’ll find they come from all walks of life. Under your guidance, some will be fit to take up arms against the zombie horde together with you, becoming allies. Ally NPCs have their own inventories and equipment slots, but they also have their own needs and demands.
Protect lives
Even with a gun in their hands, most NPC survivors aren’t suited to the hardships of a zombie apocalypse. Every rescued survivor will reward you, while every survivor lost to the infected horde will come back to kill you as a smarter, more dangerous zombie. Tend to their needs, then evacuate them from the horror they found themselves in by chopper. Otherwise they just might lose themselves to the infection and become part of the very threat you’re fighting against. But not everything in the field is trying to kill you.
Strategic areas
The map has both reliable shelters (once you clear the zombies inside) and strategic objects. But the latter are protected by walls. You will need resources in order to bypass these walls and get to the building beyond them. But be careful. Sometimes walls aren’t just there to keep someone out, but also to keep something in.
A mysterious vendor
While playing Pioneer Mode you may come across a mysterious merchant. Sometimes it’s worth not looking a gift horse in the mouth. With their help you’ll be able to sell off excess supplies and purchase some very valuable items! And let’s not forget another more legitimate businessman - the crop merchant.
Further new features that you will find in Pioneer mode include:
The ability to repair broken doors, damaged barricades and workbenches. Ranged weapons also have durability now and require the repair workbench to fix them
New defensive structures added to the game. Open the gate! Wait. Zombies. Close the gate!
Furnace, campfire and oven can now produce items automatically so long as the appropriate materials are slotted into them
And of course a brand new loading screen =3
Player feedback is the driving force behind improving Zelter and adding new features. So whether you’ve been with us for a long time or are a fresh survivor only just dropping into hostile zombie-infested territory - let us know your thoughts!
There are people counting on you, survivors! It might be too late to build paradise, but maybe you can at least delay a descent into hell.
P.S: If you would like to play the old version of Zelter, you can right-click Zelter in your Library, select Properties, then Betas and use the code: FeelingNostalgic
June'22 developer's notes
Hello, survivors!
Another month of dedicated work on Zelter has gone by, so let’s go ahead and see what’s been done in June.
Development for the new update is complete so it's on to QA (Quality Assurance) tasks. That means we’re diligently checking whether all events and interactions within the game are operating properly.
One of our key goals was to implement as much feedback from our previous beta versions of “Challenge Mode” and “Pioneer Mode” as possible. We’re working hard to meet the expectations we heard voiced by you and bring our players a rewarding experience.
As a result you’ll get to play a new live version in July!
Now that the current development stage has progressed to QA, there aren’t too many specific features to discuss. That said, making sure features we’ve already mentioned in previous updates are working properly is of critical importance.
That doesn’t mean we don’t have anything new to bring up though!
New environments
We have introduced new tilesets to diversify your survival experience. As we go on, new content will be added to keep things interesting. This includes unique resources and conditions that will demand varied strategic thinking depending on what tileset you’re on.
More on vehicles
Once vehicles are added you'll get to travel in style across the map way faster than you would on your own two feet 🚗🛵
Once you find functioning vehicles, you’ll be able to drive them. Operating vehicles will require specific resources, such as oil, electricity, etc.
Be mindful of your surroundings! Crashing your vehicle into a big obstacle can cause severe damage to it💥
We plan to provide different UIs for different types of vehicles as you will see in the future. Please note that vehicles will not be added to the update at this time.
Staying saved
After multiple internal tests we have concluded that the way you save your game in “Challenge Mode” shouldn’t be the same as “Pioneer Mode”. We believe that our previously used system where the game would save every day automatically didn’t work well with the tense atmosphere in “Challenge Mode”. Instead we decided to switch to manual saving. When playing Challenge Mode use your single precious save slot wisely, survivors!
Pioneer Mode will have a different approach to saving, with separate autosave and manual save slots.
Following the next update we’re putting all we’ve got into developing multiplayer mode. We also intend to expand the game with additional content, including various items and perks.
Our top priority is for the game to bring you the most enjoyment and we will work tirelessly to achieve that.
Look forward to the July update and we'll be looking forward to hearing what you think about it, survivors!✊
May'22 developer's notes
Hello, survivors! 👋
May is at an end and we are happy to bring you a new Zelter development update!
Pioneer Mode is nearing completion.
All core systems are currently in place and we are on to adjusting balance. After QA and localization throughout June it will be added to the live version in July. This renewed version is the fruit of 15 months of dedicated labor. Once development of Pioneer Mode is finally complete, all our efforts will be directed at multiplayer mode.
We would like to express our boundless gratitude to all of you who supported us and stuck with us through thick and thin.
Let’s move on to Pioneer Mode, then examine what’s in store for the upcoming multiplayer mode.
Pioneer Mode: Farmer’s market
In Pioneer Mode players open barriers surrounding the starting area to expand the territory available for exploration and farming. But in order to unlock the barriers you will need money and various resources. They’re not easy to come around, money in particular, just by exploring and fighting zombies. Luckily there are merchants hiding all over the map, willing to trade with you for items. They value food in particular, meaning you can sell what you grow by farming. Costs fluctuate however. Pay attention to the prices to make the best profit.
Save & Load: Bed & Tent
We have implemented a save function. The game will now automatically save at a certain time every day. However, you can also save the game at a desired time by using a bed or a tent.
NPCs: Military base
Rescued NPCs may now become companions. They all have different skills and tendencies. This area will help you periodically find more skillful NPCs who know their way around a gun (and a hungry zombie). Though still not as well as you do.
Multiplayer: Kickboard and motorcycle
Currently, we are in RnD for vehicles, developing controls, mechanics, ensuring driving around will feel satisfying. Although vehicles are not present in current Pioneer Mode, we are doing our utmost to include them in multiplayer mode. 🏍️
Multiplayer: What’s the mode?
At this moment multiplayer mode is being developed as a hybrid PvP experience. We made the decision to add it as a distinct mode as opposed to adding multiple players to challenge or pioneer mode. This mode is designed to promote cooperation, competition and betrayal.
Our very first multiplayer mode will feature multiple survivors engaging a single “special” zombie controlled by a player. The survivors' mission is to hold out until the rescue helicopter arrives. The zombie will relentlessly attack survivors and keep them on their toes, evolving as it gets EXP. Player-controlled survivors who are killed transform into zombies as well, attacking their former allies. 🧟🧟🧟
Build fortifications, hide in shelters and do all you can to survive the zombie attack and live to see the evacuation helicopter.
This wraps up our May update. There will be more to come, so stay tuned! Best of luck, survivors! ✊

April'22 developer's notes
Greetings, Survivors!👋
April is over and the team continues to work hard to bring you the long-awaited Pioneer mode. That is precisely what we’ll focus on in this update. Let’s dive in!
Arm rescued survivors
You can now promote the civilians you save and arm them to assist you in battle. Bear in mind that they can behave differently depending on their type (passive / general / active) which is also going to affect the way they react to enemies. Choose who to entrust with a gun wisely!
And to add a little extra weight to rescuing them, each civilian will now have a short background story.
Vehicles
What better way to speed up travel time than by making use of some of the vehicles standing around? The team’s researching ways to introduce controllable vehicles to the game (kickboard, motorcycle and more).
Brand new boars
We’re expanding the bestiary of Zelter with wild boars. These critters won’t just wander around. They’ll also try to eat your crops and trample your fields! Boars are also aggressive, so pay close attention and tread carefully!
Pioneer Mode & unlocking territory
Remember how we said last time, Pioneer Mode will start out with a smaller map? Here’s what it’ll look like. You will require a certain amount of money in order to lower the walls and gain access to new areas. These come with more resources, civilians to rescue and more powerful monsters. The price to unlock each subsequent area is going to increase!
Last but not least
A couple more additions will include a suspicious black market shopkeeper for you to trade with...
… As well as a new safe house.
We know Pioneer mode is a widely requested and eagerly awaited feature and we are hard at work making it the best it can be. Next update we look forward to telling you more about our plans for the multiplayer mode.
Best of luck, survivors!
Zelter: Development Status 🧟♂️👀
Greetings, survivors!👋
Zelter’s development continues. Many features have either been implemented or are going to be implemented in the near future. Let’s cover some of the biggest of the bunch and see what there is to look forward to!
Pioneer mode
We know this is among the most often-mentioned part of our development. It is precisely because of how requested it is that we want to do a thorough job of making it as good as it can be. You are seen and all the work we do is towards applying your feedback and releasing the best Pioneer mode possible. And when we do, you will have a brand new endless mode to play. Let’s get right to what’s going to be in it:
Saving & Loading
Save and Load your game progress at any time.
Unlock territory
Start the game on a 3x3 grid and expand it to 9x9 by opening barriers as you make progress through the game. More territory to explore, more resources to gather, and more NPCs who’ll be grateful for rescue!
Respawning resources
An endless game mode requires endless supplies. That’s why resources will respawn at regular intervals. Just remember to put in the time to gather them!
Additional features on the way
Pioneer mode will eventually be expanded with even more features. Learning the story behind NPCs, trading resources at a store and more are coming up. Don’t worry. We’ll be sure to tell you all about it when it happens.
New NPC features
It’s about time those rescued NPCs started pulling their weight, isn’t it? We are working on improving the AI and adding new behavior settings for the NPCs you save. Their current functions will include a personal inventory and combat capabilities. Designate up to 3 rescued NPCs to be your companions and assist you!
Challenge mode auto-save
We heard you asking for a save feature in Challenge mode! That’s why we’re working on an auto-save feature to back up that hard-earned progress and let you pick the game up from where you last left it.
Multiplayer
Competitive survival
Our current plan for the Multiplayer mode is to pit four survivors against one another. Enjoy your resource-gathering civilian-rescuing zombie-shooting action, this time with competition!
Horde mode
A 4-on-300 showdown! This mode in which four players stand together against an enormous horde of zombies is currently in development. As you can see, Zelter continues to receive updates. We welcome and examine all your feedback as we work on the game. With this knowledge and your support our team is working tirelessly to enhance it with features and quality of life improvements.
Challenge Mode Tips & Tricks
Hello, fellow survivors!
Getting to the final day of Challenge mode in Zelter is no easy task. Use these hints to become a seasoned survivor!
1) Complete the tutorial
You might know how the game is played from the previous updates, but modifications to the game mean it can sometimes change. Completing the tutorial means you’ll definitely have hands-on experience with every up-to-date feature.
2) Set your difficulty
Following the tutorial you’ll get to make your character and choose your difficulty. Novice is easier than the default Seasoned difficulty, and Veteran is for those looking for a true challenge. Every difficulty is valid and you should play whichever one you prefer!
3) Keep an eye on the messages
CP is going to message you as soon as the mission starts. Among other things, you’ll find out the helicopter arrival time. You should expect more messages from Command as you progress through the game. They contain important info, so pay attention!
4) Find shelter
When there’s a zombie plague outside, staying out in the open is beyond dangerous. Bunker-like shelters in the area are far more secure. Find one and set up your base soon and use it as your permanent hub for all your crafting and item-storing needs. You won’t be able to stay inside indefinitely, but you’ll be glad you have a shelter to go back to.
5) Sneak around
Sneak, don’t run! If a zombie’s not directly looking at you, you can get past them without a fight. Just sneak by holding down SHIFT and move forward. Just remember, when you sneak you also hold your breath, and you can only do that for so long.
6) Start gathering and crafting early
Time is not on your side. At the very beginning, focus on crafting your tools, an oven and a wooden workbench. From there you can craft more advanced structures and gear. Remember the best use for each tool Axe - to chop trees for wood and dismantle wooden objects Pickaxe - to mine ore and stones Mallet - to break down garbage piles and various metal objects
Chests will help you keep adequate space to store all your resources. Make several if you need to!
7) Remember your quick access slots
Zombies won’t politely wait while you rummage through your backpack. Quick access slots are your friends. Make sure you assign all your essentials to quick access slots to gather resources or defend yourself at a moment’s notice
8) Food and water
If you are hungry or thirsty, you won’t be able to survive, so you need a supply of water and food. Drink from taps or sinks in any house (or your shelter) and that will take care of thirst. Hunger is trickier, but if you chop down an apple tree the apples will alleviate both your hunger and your thirst!
9) Make a gun
The starting box may well contain a pistol, but don’t count on your luck - make your own. A Metal Workbench will give you a choice of pistol, shotgun, SMG, assault rifle or hunting rifle to craft. A trusty pistol would do you good, but remember to experiment! Your enemies will get bigger. So should your guns. Just make sure you craft the right ammo too. It’s simple enough to gun down a single normal zombie in 2-3 shots, so no need to go in guns blazing. Be wary of the ammo supply.
10) Rescue civilians
Your endgame score depends on how many civilians you save. Not to mention the perks every rescued civilian gives you. Even when you’re out of space for new perks, they can give you supply boxes with ammo, food or medicine. Look out for civilians and get to them before the zombies do!
11) Craft a backpack
You start with a fanny pack that has rather limited space. A proper backpack will require leather that you get from hunting animals. You’ll get more than double the inventory space, so it’s definitely worth it!
12) Secure a landing zone
On day three the first helicopter will arrive. The noise is guaranteed to attract zombies from all across the neighborhood. Secure the position in advance by building barricades and turrets to cover the civilians’ escape.
13) Craft a refrigerator
Spoiled food does you no good, but a refrigerator will keep it usable for much longer! If you plan to stock up on food - make sure you have a fridge to put it into.
14) Scout your surroundings
The area around your shelter is always worth scouting. You may find loot boxes or useful items such as herbs with which to craft medicine and tonics. Furthermore you can note the location of the water pump and electric generator early on. Both of these facilities are essential so be sure to know where to go when you need to fix them!
15) Craft skull keys
Zombie bones can be used to craft keys to open your way to particularly useful loot - armor, tools, barricades, weapons and ammunition, as well as medkits and tonics.
16) Complete additional (blue) missions.
Completing a blue mission triggers a supply drone to be dispatched to the area. Among other things it will bring you infection medicine - the only cure for the zombie infection.
17) Scout at night as well
Night time can be frightening, but if you’re well-prepared you can use the time to investigate further, save additional civilians and gather resources. Just make sure you return to safety before the helicopter arrives!
18) Use map markers
Right-click on the map to choose from markers you can set on the map. Found a chest you can’t unlock yet? Mark it to visit it later when you have the key.
19) Craft to spare
You’d do well to craft more than you need at any given time. What you’re not going to use right now may well come in handy later!
20) Remember to level up!
Put your talent points to good use! However, since you can’t refund your talent points, read up on what each talent does in advance and get ready to unlock and upgrade the ones that help your playstyle.
We hope you found these hints helpful in surviving the zombie plague. Do you have any hints or recommendations for fellow survivors? Share them in the comments below and have fun playing Zelter!
