Improved VFX

The Abilities that our characters wield are looking better and better! Below is the attack Head Clap Crush from our Chivalry Arts Class.

Cinematic Production

The Cinematics across the various story arcs have also been coming along well. The language of the dialogue has been changed slightly based on the feedback we received after the Demo release.

UI Updates

Unit Management UI has been significantly updated. We now have dedicated tabs for Unit Condition, Equipment, Abilities, Finishers and Inventory with a plethora of options available on each page.

Class Change

Versatility in gameplay is something we want to encourage in Crimson Tactics. We have a robust Class Change system that is currently a work in progress. However, we can show a snippet of it here:

Skill Trees

Every Class in Crimson Tactics has its own Skill Tree that can be upgraded by the Player via Skill Points that are gained by battling, gaining experience and leveling up the characters. The image below is the Skill Tree of the Berserker class called ‘Battle Arts’.

Town Buildings are utility areas that the Player can access in order to purchase and craft items as well as hire human and mount units to form a part of their squad.

Guild Hall

Guild Halls are found across Wendalle where mercenaries can be found and recruited for missions. Many skillful warriors are always looking for coins and are willing to join a party for spoils and fame.

Shop

Shops are found across Wendalle and sell many useful items such as consumables, weapons, armor, and crafting supplies that knights and rebels alike can use in their battles.

Stable

Mounts are commonly used across Wendalle for trade, commerce, farm work, and even battles. Stables provide an opportunity to acquire mounts to ride into battle and give a helping hand in turning the tide of fights in the rider's favor.

Blacksmith & Crafting Area (Work In Progress)

Blacksmiths assist the people of Wendalle in crafting the weapons and armor they need to face the dangers that threaten them. They can be found across Wendalle with Blacksmiths of varying skills. They are also accompanied by Potionmasters who make potions and other consumables that give warriors an edge in battle.

There are 3 types of Character Units in Crimson Tactics:

Unique Character Units

These units are significant characters in the game’s narrative, and the political thriller that is Crimson Tactics revolves around them.

Arlys Frink

The protagonist of Crimson Tactics, Arlys is an able fighter and his actions will decide the fate of Wendalle. He can prove himself to be a capable leader or fail to save his own soul even, depending on what the player chooses.

Blazh Solberg

Blazh’s life has been always affected by the turmoil eating away at his nation. It had finally forced him to take up his Bow and assist Arlys in his journey - becoming an ally and close friend.

Duke Beorn Rolfe

Duke Beorn Rolfe comes from a line of royalty. An extremist and highly intelligent man, he usurps the throne of Wendalle from King Edrich Alwyn by allying with The Holy Empire of Asalia. He's a vicious, highly-skilled, two-handed Knight who can control Dark Magic - and can cut down squads of enemies without breaking a sweat.

King Edrich Alwyn

King Edrich is the former ruler of Wendalle. He maintained peace throughout the kingdom using diplomacy and peaceful means. Unfortunately, his peaceful methods made him complacent and drew the ire of disruptive forces. He is slayed by Duke Beorn Rolfe, who had single-handedly sieged Castle White Pyre. His death throws the entire kingdom into turmoil and leads to an era of suspicion, duplicity, and betrayal.

Semi Unique Character Units

Semi-Unique Characters are the supportive characters who help move the plot along and who may or may not serve as pawns in the larger political turmoil of Wendalle.

Sir Unwin Braddock

The Commander of the Knights under Duke Arsenio, Sir Unwin is a cruel and rough man who is defined by his corruption, greediness, and blind loyalty to the ruler of Swozalta, Duke Arsenio. His skill set as a fighter is great, only surpassed by his vanity as a commanding officer.

Rheda Solberg

A kind-hearted, fiercely loyal ranger, Rheda is the agile and tenacious sister of Blazh. Her beauty is compounded by her resolve and her determination to see problems through. She loves her brother dearly and will do everything she can to protect him.

Durwin The Deranged

A powerful, if unhinged, warrior, Durwin got his nickname ‘The Deranged’ after he slew a party of men for spilling a drink on him at a pub. He’s bloodthirsty and merciless and respects nothing more than coin. He lives his life wanting nothing more than ale to drink, fights to pick, and skulls to crush.

Matilde Messer

Matilde is a strong rebel of the White Banner. She’s a loyal to the cause and will do what must be done in order for their purposes to be fulfilled. She serves as a right-hand woman to the leader of the cause.

Generic Character Units

The common units who can be either friend or foe. These units are commonly found across Wendalle and serve as units most commonly seen in battles.

Knights

Frontline Defensive Melee Units. Playstyle centers around being a tank in the frontline and soaking up damage while also dealing some medium damage.

Warriors

Frontline Offensive Melee unit. Playstyle centers around dealing medium damage in the frontline. Unit is very versatile in the type of damage it can deal.

Rangers

Ranged units specializing in Kiting and Mobility. Playstyle centers around dealing damage from a distance and maintaining distance from the frontline.

Rogues

Agility-based units specializing in critical hits. Playstyle centers around moving quickly and dealing critical damage.

Party Management

We are currently working on Party Management. This feature is very WIP right now.

Early Access

We have decided that we want to release the game on Steam Early Access. This will give us an opportunity to integrate Player Feedback into our Agile Development Pipeline. We are targeting End of July as a tentative time period for our Early Access Release. The Early Access FAQ can be found on the Crimson Tactics Steam Store Page.

Essentially, we plan to release a Feature Complete version of the game for Early Access and add more content over the Early Access Period. We plan to release around 20+ hours of content at the beginning and gradually add more upto 50+ hours of content. During this time, we also plan to balance and tweak the gameplay based on the feedback we receive from the community.

AI Profiles & AI Protocols

The AI System in Crimson Tactics is based on Nested Behavior Trees. Each unit has an AI Profile which is a behavior tree. Each Node in the AI Profile is a separate Behavior Tree in itself. These nodes are called AI Protocols.

Attack Nearest Unit Protocol

Here is an example of an AI Protocol. This Protocol dictates the unit to seek out the nearest enemy unit and attack it. The behavior tree highlighted in green shows the selected branch of the tree and the corresponding action being executed by the AI.

Behavior with different weapons

The protocol works with both melee and ranged weapons. We can see the same basic attack protocol seeking out the nearest enemy and attacking it with a crossbow.

Field Arts Protocol

We also have Special Ability Protocols that make the unit execute Special Abilities. These Protocols are designed in a way to optimally use the stats of the unit.

Complex Behavior

AI Protocols can be mixed and matched in the AI Profile to create complex behavior.
