“Punji” creation story

Survivors! The “Wasteland drift” season introduced a new unusual way to cause trouble for your opponents: “Punji”. It can create energy barriers between stakes, and passing through those barriers deals a lot of harm to your enemies.

Today, the development team answers interesting questions on the specifics of the creation process of the new weapon. We hope that you will enjoy this format, and we can continue to share various insights about Crossout development. Enjoy!

Narrative

Q: Why is the weapon called “Punji”? Is there a story or a specific cultural context behind that name?

A: The naming convention for Syndicate parts is based on the Eastern and Asian cultures. The name also must be associatively connected to the mechanics or appearance of the part.

In the case of “Punji”, the key idea was to associate it with one of the various traps used in the Vietnam War. This is also in line with the part of the story presented in the update: the Syndicate is using “Punji” to fight the Scavenger battle walkers that invaded their lands.

We have looked at many different traps, and “Punji” was the best fit for the name of the weapon. It refers to sharpened bamboo stakes widely used in the South East Asia in the 19–20th century. The stakes would be placed in holes or behind some vegetation in hopes that the enemy would bump into the trap.

This concept is very similar to the weapon’s design, and it helps imagine how such a deadly trap might look in the world of Crossout.

Game design

Q: What was “Punji” like during the concept stage? Were there any unexpected changes made to the original vision of “Panji” during the development phase, and if so, what caused those changes? Or did everything go according to the initial plans?

A: Not much has changed during the development process. The concept of “Punji” was initially the same way we see it in the game now. We tested different variations of its appearance shift when you hold down the launch button, but the essence of the weapon has not changed from the initial concept to the release.

Appearance

Q: What was the inspiration for the look of the “turret” and the energy barrier? Why does the weapon look like it does, and what decisions led to its final appearance? What steps were taken to make the energy field look more distinctive and noticeable for the players?

A: We had the task of designing a 4x4x2 device, from the perspective of the in-game grid (1 pin = 30 cm). It was described as an epic part that places a barrier, which other players can still pass through. That’s why we decided on the “energy fence” concept.

The part belongs to the Syndicate faction, which meant we needed to depict a device that placed stakes with industrial design elements that is simple to install and easy to understand.

In terms of visuals, the key components were simple: a compartment for storing stakes and a shaft for deploying them, as well as structures supporting the weld points, because one of the most important design elements is ease of installation.

So in terms of the specification, we had to make a simple box, but we needed to make it more interesting. We like to avoid creating plain boxes, so we worked with negative space when developing the silhouette. We kept a balance of large, medium and small masses and paid attention to zones of visual tension buildup and release to achieve compositional balance.

“Punji” uses the visual language of materials and execution typical for the Syndicate. Simplicity is their preferred method to emphasize the restraint and neatness of the form.

As for the effects, they emphasize the specifics of the in-game mechanics and give the player clear signals on it.

Balance and meta

Q: Why did Crossout need a weapon like “Punji”? What did it bring to the game, and how did it improve the balance?

A: When the update was being developed, the game had the attacking gameplay meta. “Punji” was created to support alternative strategies of playing and countering aggressive opponents.

Wild chase after the balloons in the “Winter hunt”!

Hello, survivors! The “Grand Prix” update starts with the updated “Winter hunt” brawl. It has the best parts of the “Witch hunt” and is now even more varied thanks to the new preset vehicles. We would like to remind you that the type of blueprints changes from battle to battle: you can take part in a wild race on extravagant carriages, race cars or armoured cars with hovers, or find yourself in a running competition with robotic legs. Join in!

Attention! The mode will be available from January 23 to January 29 inclusive!

  • Victory goes to the person who can keep the balloons on their armoured vehicle longer than others and earn 100 points.
  • The brawl has preset vehicles. From battle to battle, the preset blueprints may change: there are vehicles with wheels, hovers or robotic legs available.
  • There are bonuses on the map, and by picking them up, the player can get additional advantages in the brawl. These include: temporary invulnerability, temporary invisibility, a “Kapkan” mine or a homing shot from a “Scorpion”.
  • Be careful: not all bonuses are good. Some may attach a bomb to your armoured car or slow it down. Hurry up and touch an enemy armoured car to pass the bomb to it, otherwise your car is going to explode! You may also try your luck at finding an invulnerability bonus in 10 seconds before the bomb goes off and protect yourself from the explosion. But that would be a risky play.
  • To take the balloons from the enemy, you only need to crash into their car. And remember: a high-speed chase is not the only way. Try to outsmart your opponents!
  • From the moment you pick up the balloons, your car will be gradually slowing down to a certain speed limit. Use your driving skills and any available tricks to keep the balloons as long as possible!
  • The reward for the battles of the mode is wires.

Special challenges and rewards:

  • Day 1: complete 3 battles in the “Winter hunt” brawl. Reward: “Humanitarian aid” container.
  • Day 2: place at least 6th in the “Winter hunt” brawl. Reward: 80 Engineer badges.
  • Day 3: place at least 6th in the “Winter hunt” brawl. Repeat 2 times. Reward: 2 “Passion 1” stickers.
  • Day 4: complete 3 battles in the “Winter hunt” brawl. Reward: “Humanitarian aid” container.
  • Day 5: place at least 5th in the “Winter hunt” brawl. Repeat 3 times. Reward: “Banshee’s tears” paint.
  • Day 6: complete 2 battles in the “Winter hunt” brawl. Reward: 50 Engineer badges.
  • Day 7: place at least 4th in the “Winter hunt” brawl. Repeat 2 times. Reward: “Logistician’s container”.

“Dronapocalypse” brawl returns

Attention! The mode will be available from February 20 to February 26 inclusive!

  • “Dronapocalypse” is a team PvP brawl.
  • The team that deals more damage to the enemy leviathan or destroys it wins the battle. If at the end of the battle both leviathans have the same amount of durability, then the battle ends in a draw.
  • Survivors use pre-assembled drones in this brawl, some of which were updated and improved. There are also new drones added.
  • At the start of each battle, you are automatically given a drone with random weapons.
  • The mode has respawns. Before each respawn, you need to choose a drone to continue the battle. The shown blueprints are randomly selected. If you fail to choose a drone in the allotted time, you will automatically be given one of the suggested options.
  • Choose a drone wisely and take into account the current situation on the battlefield. The right choice will help you not only destroy the enemy leviathan faster, but also buy time by controlling your opponents and defending your leviathan.
  • From battle to battle, the leviathans of your or enemy teams, as well as locations, may change.
  • The reward for the battles of the mode is wires.

Battle for uranium

  • The mode will be periodically active for 1 week at a time.
  • The participation conditions (PS requirements, ability to use certain parts, ability to play in a group or solo, etc.) may vary. More details on the next “Battle for uranium” conditions and dates will be available in the game, and its start will also be announced on the Crossout website and social media.
  • The “Clan confrontation” game mode will be unavailable during the “Battle for uranium”.

Miscellaneous

  • AI-controlled players behaviour improved: now they will try to flee an area affected by fire or cryogenic weapons.

  • Improved the environmental objects of the “New Fuji” map and optimized the location.
  • Updated the “El Diablo Gorge” map and adapted it for armoured aircraft gameplay. Also, we would like to note that there are no plans on adding armoured aircraft to the “Invasion” game mode.
  • Improved a number of environmental objects of the “Ravagers foothold” and “Desert valley” maps.

  • Reload time increased from 2.5 to 4.5 sec.
  • Ammo reserve reduced from 30 to 20.
  • “Rotation speed +30%” upgrade replaced with “Rate of fire +25%”.

Jormungandr

  • Durability increased from 437 to 568 pts.
  • Now fires a burst of three clusters instead of a single shot.
  • Damage of a single pellet reduced by 29%.
  • Reload time increased from 2.5 to 4.5 sec.
  • Ammo reserve reduced from 30 to 20.
  • “Rotation speed +30%” upgrade replaced with “Rate of fire +25%”.
Comment on single-shot shotguns: this weapon type is very unpopular in comparison with automatic shotguns. The changes are similar to recent changes to cannons, and should shift the focus of the gameplay towards doing higher damage, but more rarely. The additional increase in durability is aimed towards addressing the low survivability of these weapons.

Machine guns and miniguns

SM Hornet

  • Durability increased from 57 to 63 pts.
  • Damage increased by 12.5%.
  • Projectile speed increased by 6%.

LM-54 Chord

  • Durability increased from 66 to 73 pts.
  • Damage increased by 17%.
  • Projectile speed increased by 6%.

  • Damage increased by 14.5%.
  • Projectile speed increased by 6%.
  • The perk now gives 50% bonus to damage when fully heated (instead of 30%).

Punisher

  • Durability increased from 386 to 449 pts.
  • Damage increased by 17%.
  • Projectile speed increased by 6%.
  • The perk now requires 30 successful hits to be activated (instead of 40).

ST-M23 Defender

  • Damage increased by 10%.

M-25 Guardian

  • Durability increased from 179 to 195 pts.
  • Damage increased by 17%.
  • Projectile speed increased by 7%.
  • The perk now charges up in 5 seconds (instead of 7).

MG14 Arbiter

  • Durability increased from 240 to 261 pts.
  • Damage increased by 19%.
  • Projectile speed increased by 7%.
  • The perk now charges up in 5 seconds (instead of 7).
Comment on machine guns and miniguns: after the removal of hitscan mechanic from machine guns, their efficiency decreased noticeably due to increased rate of misses. In order to keep this type of weapons relevant, we decided to make compensating changes.

Other changes

Sidekick

  • Optimal range increased by 72%.
Comment: the change will make the drone’s damage dealing more stable, since it will be able to deal damage from a longer range.

Tempest

  • Cooling rate reduced by 17.5%.
Comment: high efficiency between 4500 and 6500 PS. The cooling time is now the same as that of the “Whirl”. The change will make the weapon more dependent on a cooling module.

Bat

  • The perk’s bonus to the volume of additional ammunition increased from 20% to 30%.
  • Power increased by 15%.
  • Mass limit increased from 6500 to 7000 kg.
Comment: efficiency of the cabin is too low in comparison with its analogues.

Corvo

  • Durability increased from 160 to 180 pts.
  • Damage increased by 10%.
  • Projectile speed increased by 14%.
  • Ammo reserve increased from 16 to 18.
Comment: similar to the changes for machine guns and miniguns.

Elephant

  • Damage increased by 7%.
Comment: lack of efficiency in comparison with other epic cannons.

Blockchain

  • Damage increased by 14%.
  • The perk now reduces the penetrability of parts to 60% of the original (instead of 75%).
  • Durability increased from 260 to 295 pts.
Comment: the changes will help increase the efficiency of the weapon and bring it back to the battlefield.

Thunderbolt

  • Durability increased from 173 to 195 pts.
Comment: low survivability in comparison with the rest of the automatic shotguns.

Humpback

  • The amount of damage you need to take to accumulate the full bonus increased from 1000 to 1250 pts.
  • The reset time of the full bonus reduced from 30 to 20 sec.
Comment: consistently high efficiency of the cabin on a wide range of PS and among different types of builds. In the current game context, the perk accumulates extremely quickly and resets very slowly, thanks to which it is kept at high values for most of the battle.

Omni

  • Penalty to power reduced from 12% to 9%.
  • Increased traction.

Atom

  • Penalty to power reduced from 15% to 12%.
  • Increased traction.
Comment on “Omni” and “Atom”: the power penalty of these movement parts is somewhat inflated in comparison with the current power penalty of “Meat Grinder”, which has the same movement mechanics. There are also frequent complaints about the lack of traction of these movement parts, and the change should fix this.

ML 200

  • Reduced the effect of surface angle on movement speed.
  • Added 25% thermal and cryogenic damage resistance.
  • Tonnage increased from 2400 to 2900 kg.

Bigram

  • Reduced the effect of surface angle on movement speed.
  • Added 25% thermal and cryogenic damage resistance.
  • Tonnage increased from 1900 to 2300 kg.

Gerrida I

  • Reduced the effect of surface angle on movement speed.
  • Durability increased from 435 to 450 pts.
  • Tonnage increased from 1500 to 1800 kg.
Comment on mechanical legs: low popularity of the entire movement part type. By reducing the sensitivity to the angle of inclination of the surface, the medium speed of mechanical legs should increase. The other changes are aimed at increasing the survivability of armoured cars with mechanical legs.

Impeller

  • Increased yaw rate bonus: for main rotors from 60% to 65%, for coaxial rotors from 35% to 50%.
Comment: insufficient effect of perk on yaw rate of armoured aircraft.

Meat Grinder

  • Maximum speed of rotating in one spot reduced by 30%.
Comment: the previous limitation allowed heavy vehicles on augers to rotate at a speed close to that of lighter movement parts, which should not be the case.

Titan

  • The wheel’s protector now takes 50% more damage.
Comment: the change should lower the efficiency of the wheel when it is used as armour and mounted on the front or on the back of the build. At the same time, it shouldn’t affect the survivability of “Titans” mounted on the side too much.

AC80 Stillwind

  • Changed the perk: for every 50 m passed by the projectile, its explosion radius increases by 0.2 m.
  • Durability increased from 424 to 488 pts.
  • Mass increased from 513 to 590 kg.
Comment: the original perk does not match the intended style of playing with this autocannon, and therefore has little effect on its efficiency. The new perk, as in the case of its predecessors, increases efficiency based on distance. The changes to mass and durability are to set the “Stillwind” apart from its predecessor “AC72 Whirlwind”, which used to have the same parameters.

Waltz

  • Projectiles’ rotation radius reduced by 25%.
Comment: low efficiency. The change will make it easier to deal damage from longer distances.

Parser

  • Durability increased from 290 to 370 pts.
  • Charging time reduced from 1.5 to 1.2 sec.
  • Charging now also increases projectile speed by 20%.
Comment: low efficiency of the shotgun.

Reaper

  • Durability increased from 520 to 566 pts.
  • Mass increased from 603 to 656 kg.
Comment: low survivability of the weapon.

Assembler

  • Energy consumption increased from 12 to 13 pts.
  • PS increased from 2400 to 2600.
  • Damage at full charge without perk increased by 10%.
  • Maximum damage with perk increased from 280% to 305%.
  • Durability increased from 359 to 413 pts.
  • Mass increased from 293 to 337 kg.
Comment: “Assembler’s” efficiency is not very dependent on modules, so it is used in a narrow PS range (quite low for a legendary weapon). The changes aim to increase the PS range in which it will be used.

Charybdis

  • Distance required to activate the perk reduced from 25 to 15 m.
  • Delay to reset the perk reduced from 4 to 1 sec.
Comment: the change will make turning the front of the vehicle towards the attacking “Charybdis” a more effective way to counteract this weapon. With the previous parameters, in such a situation, the perk of a “Charybdis” pursuing a player would take a very long time to reset, and the weapon would have time to deal damage deep inside the armoured car. Also, due to the rather long distance, the perk was sometimes activated by a nearby ally.

Swarm

  • Rate of fire reduced by 10%.
  • Reload time increased from 7.5 to 9 sec.
  • Blast radius reduced by 22%.
Comment: the previous change of damage dependence on blast radius was necessary for stable damage dealing, but it also increased the efficiency of the weapon too much. The reduction of blast radius partially compensates for this. The rest of the changes make it easier to counteract the “Swarm”.

Kami

  • Power increased by 10%.
  • The perk now also unhooks cables (from “Skinner”, “Kapkan”, “Jubokko”).
  • Perk active time increased from 4 to 6 sec.
  • Perk cooldown time reduced from 16 to 10 sec.
Comment: the “Kami” perk has quite narrow use, so we are expanding its implementation and frequency of activation. Additional power increase will make armoured cars with this cabin more mobile.

Nova

  • Power increased by 10%.
  • Perk cooldown time reduced from 20 to 16 sec.
  • Tonnage increased from 5500 to 6700 kg.
Comment: low efficiency of the cabin.

BWC Warrior

  • Speed reduced from 70 to 68 km/h.
  • Permanent bonus to speed in the first mode reduced from 10% to 5%, additional bonus to speed increased from 10% to 15%.
  • Permanent bonus to power in the first mode reduced from 20% to 10%, additional bonus to power increased from 20% to 30%.
  • Permanent bonus to damage in the second mode reduced from 10% to 5%, additional bonus to damage increased from 10% to 15%.
Comment: according to data gathered from numerous battles involving this cabin, its perk was too efficient and required some adjustments. The changes will keep the maximum possible bonuses, but lower the average bonus values in battle.

CC-18 Typhoon

  • Changed the perk: after a hit, deals damage to weapons and movement parts in the amount of 1.5% from their current durability 3 times during 1 sec. The damage is not dealt if the durability of a part is lower than 35%.
Comment: the perk should make “Typhoon” an effective choice against armoured cars with high combined durability of movement parts and weapons.

Ripper

  • Added interaction with “Tormentor”. Activating the module increases the damage from shots.
  • The ram damage multiplier of a disc stuck on an enemy increased by 2.5 times.
Comment: synergy with the “Tormentor” will allow more efficient use of energy on armoured cars with two “Rippers”. Ram damage of discs became too low after the changes to ram damage mechanic, the multiplier change should fix this.

Breaker

  • Changes to the model of the weapon:
  • It now fires from 4 barrels interchangeably instead of 2 barrels as before;
  • The barrels moved slightly upwards.
  • Durability increased from 387 to 414 pts.
Comment: the lower barrels of the shotgun were disabled, as they blocked the possibility of firing downwards with any armouring. The new model allows you to install armour for the weapon no larger than 1 pin while still maintaining acceptable aiming angles. The increase in durability should compensate for the enlarged model.

Ram damage

  • Reduced the dependency of damage on the mass.
Comment: the change will reduce the efficiency of ramming with heavy armoured cars.

  • The notification about the start of the new “Clan confrontation” season no longer appears in a separate window after all other notifications.

  • Improved the sound effects of the “M-29 Protector” machine gun.

  • Fixed a bug that caused the camera to not centre on stickers in build mode.
  • Fixed a bug that made it possible to get under the roof of a building on the “Powerplant” map while using a battle walker.
  • Fixed a bug that caused falling into the abyss on the “Volcano” map to trigger the stun sound effect.
  • Fixed incorrect collision model for one of the masks on the “Founders Canyon” map.
  • Fixed a bug that caused an incorrect flight effect of “Helios” weapon projectiles.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the “Phoenix” crossbow bolts to be attached with an offset from the point of impact.
  • Improved a number of in-game texts.

Survivors! We present to your attention the Crossout development roadmap. It covers the period from January to March 2025 inclusive. The map shows only some of the new features we are actively working on. We won’t reveal all the surprises, but we can tell you one thing for certain — the next big update will be dedicated to the Founders!

Please note that this roadmap is for informational purposes. The release period of these changes may be postponed. Also, the new features presented on the roadmap are not final and may be changed before they are introduced into the game or may not make it into the game at all.

“FInd a treasure!” contest

Intelligence reports that the locals tell many legends about valuables that were buried here long ago. This is your chance to get rich! Let's go on a quest!

Now let's go searching!

Rules:

  • This game is a variation of the well-known “Battleship” game, where participants need to name the coordinates of the point where they think the gift is located.
  • These coordinates are located on the intersection of the two axes of the playing field. For instance: G7 or E10.
  • Each gift occupies 1 cell of the playing field.
  • Targets can be located on ANY cell of the field.
  • In order to find a gift, you need to write the coordinate of the selected point as a comment to this post. Each player can write 2 coordinates in one comment. You can post only one comment!
  • The game will last until 21.01.2025, 09:00 GMT.
  • We will reveal gift locations with a winners list.
  • The player who first guessed the gift’s coordinates in the comments is the one who found it. All subsequent comments with this coordinate are not counted.
  • If the participant guesses the coordinates of two different gifts, then he will receive both rewards.
  • Don’t forget to write your in-game nickname and the platform in the same comment.

You can find:

  • 5x Upcoming Event Pass
  • 5x 7 days of premium subscription
  • 5x 3 days of premium subscription

Good luck!

The mass testing of the new balance changes has begun!

Hello, survivors! We’ve launched the special testing server where you can test all the balance changes planned for the next update. You can read the announcement here.

In addition, we have introduced some more changes to the server:

Titan

  • The wheel’s protector now takes double damage.
Comment: the change should lower the efficiency of the wheel when it is used as armour and mounted on the front or on the back of the build. At the same time, it shouldn’t affect the survivability of “Titans” mounted on the side too much.

BWC Warrior

  • The amount of distance travelled required for reaching the maximum damage bonus increased from 400 to 600 m.
  • The amount of damage dealt required for reaching the maximum bonuses to speed and power increased by 1.5 times.
  • Active time of the additional bonuses reduced from 10 to 8 sec.
Comment: according to data gathered from numerous battles involving this cabin, its perk was too efficient and required some adjustments.

We would like to remind you that the testing will take place every day from January 17 to January 19, from 13:00 to 19:00 GMT.

What to expect in the upcoming update. January 2025

Hello, survivors! It seems not so long ago that the “Wasteland drift” update was released, but it’s the middle of January already. And while you’re street racing (or chasing down those racer rascals) in the new “No brakes” brawl, we’re ready to talk about the next update.

A number of familiar brawls will return after a well-deserved break, as well as the new event with a reward scale, major balance changes, and a new epic…

We remind you that all the new features described in the “Developer blog” are not final and may be changed before they are introduced into the game or may not make it into the game at all.

Brawls in the update

The first update of the new year will bring back some familiar game modes. The whirlwind fray of the “Dronapocalypse”, tactical matches of the “Sea battle”, battles of the “Impulsiveness” and a first person view of the battlefield where Scavengers face the Syndicate.

And that’s not all! Do you remember the “Witch hunt”? We know you like that mode. Well, it’s not going to return in the next update. But there is another “hunt” afoot, the “Winter hunt”. It may be similar in gameplay to its Halloween counterpart, but the preset vehicles are quite different… You’ll see soon enough.

Other nice surprises

Mary, Jane and survivors who are willing to join them in looting another warehouse of valuables will have a chance to do so in a new event with a reward scale. Meanwhile, the Syndicate and the Scavengers are having a showdown and causing a ruckus throughout the Valley.

There are even rumours of a new awesome weapon that allows you to hurl bouncing ****** at enemies. It will become available a little later after the update releases, so stay tuned.

In addition, there are a number of different improvements and changes planned for the update: updating the “Breaker” model, as well as fixing some known bugs and releasing the balance changes, which are available for testing this weekend.

If you don’t see the “Breaker” model improvements on the test server, it means they’re coming to the game with the update.

That’s all for today. See you in future developer blog entries and other news!

New brawl “No brakes” is already available!

Hello! It’s time to test your driving skills in the new “No brakes” brawl. Get ahead of all your rivals and don’t get caught by the vigilant Wasteland police! But even if you do, you will still have a great chance to make things difficult for the other racers on the track.

Attention! The mode will be available from January 16 to January 22 inclusive!

  • “No Brakes” is a PvP race in which players have to compete against each other in a 3 lap street race while evading the pursuit of the Wasteland police.
  • The race takes place with preset cars. You can replenish your boosters fuel supply by successfully drifting.
  • Initially, only AI players are on the police team. But if an AI player manages to get close to a racer and stay near them for a certain amount of time, the racer is considered to be arrested and switches to the police side. In this case, their goal is to catch the remaining racers on the track.
  • The reward for the battles of the mode is wires.

Special challenges and rewards:

  • Day 1: earn 3000 points in the “No brakes” brawl. Reward: “Orange sky” paint.
  • Day 2: complete 3 battles in the “No brakes” brawl. Reward: “Humanitarian aid” container.
