The Rat Monarch - Exploring character classes in Desktop Dungeons: Rewind #6

Welcome back to the first Class Post of 2023!

This week we’ll be looking at the most royal class in all of Desktop Dungeons: Rewind, the Rat Monarch. Are you ready to nibble your opponents to death with the power of supreme dental hygiene?

Abilities

🧀 Regal Hygiene - Rat bites corrode enemies. Gains one stack of Corrosive Strike per level.

🧀 Regal Perks - Sensitive whiskers detect deals. All shops are scouted. Buying an item regenerates 50% health and mana (may overheal)

🧀 Regal Size - Rats are the CORRECT size: Small. Lower maximum health and mana, all items are large.

Before we venture deeper into the Rat Monarch, we need to know what the Corrosion status is and how it works. When a monster is corroded, it takes extra damage equal to its corrosion on hit. This extra damage is also applied on spells, and can ramp up very high at later levels!

Regal Hygiene allows Rat Monarchs to give corrosion to an enemy on attack. The amount of corrosion applied increases by 1 per level (and 1 per 80 Conversion Points!) For example, if a level two Rat Monarch attacks a monster, that monster will now have two corrosion. The second attack will deal two extra damage from corrosion and apply two more stacks of corrosion, which means a third attack will deal four extra damage. Stacking corrosion is the main way that the Rat Monarch kills things!

Regal Size reduces Rat Monarch’s base damage, mana, and health. The reduction of base damage means that building up corrosion on enemies is your main way of killing them. Corrosion does not go away, meaning you can build corrosion by fighting, exploring to heal up, rinse, and repeat, until you’re able to kill the monster.

The second element of Regal Size is that all items are large items, so let's talk about inventory size in Desktop Dungeons: Rewind. Your inventory is made up of 30 slots, and each large item you are carrying fills five slots while small items only fill one. Potions are usually small items, but not to the Rat. This means that inventory management can become tricky, especially when wanting to make use of Regal Perks.

Regal Perks is here to help the Rat Monarch heal up while fighting enemies. One issue being that... You need inventory space to buy an item, and we’re already a little short on that. You’ll be making decisions about which items you’ll be holding onto throughout each run, and timing your spending to get value out of the healing. You’ll be converting the items you don’t need, making your corrosive nibbles stronger!

Regal Perks also shows the locations of shops on the map. This is very useful for conserving tiles for regen fighting (check out our Monk post to learn about that!)

Gods

🧀 Binlor Ironshield - Binlor is one of the best Gods to worship as the Rat Monarch. Binlor gives damage resistance through Stone Skin and Stone Form, which lets the rat build up corrosion while saving tiles to regen on later. The second reason is that the Rat has incredible synergy with Pisorf and Stone Fist, but we’ll get to that later… All in all, the God of Mining is here to help!

🧀 Mystera Annur - Rats like to attack things. Not for damage, but to build corrosion! Damage from spells benefits from corrosion, and so Mystera becomes a great choice to worship. Flames reduces your base damage and increases the damage of Burndayraz, making it great for the rat who doesn’t care about base damage. Magic can also help you to cast Pisorf and Burndayraz more often.

🧀 Jehora Jeheyu - Jehora lets you exchange your Health and Mana Potions for permanent boosts to health and mana. This covers up the weaknesses from Regal Size through increasing your stats and freeing up your inventory slots.

The Earthmother is another reasonable God because Vine Form boosts health and gives damage reduction, but Rats have issues with getting value out of Plantation because they struggle to kill weaker enemies quickly. Entanglement is also average because slowing enemies isn’t very beneficial.

Make sure to avoid worshipping Tikki Tooki and Taurog! Tikki punishes the player when they are hit multiple times by the same enemy, which rats love to do, and Taurog fills your inventory with sub-par items while punishing you for using glyphs.

Glyphs

🧀 Pisorf - Knockback is one of the most important things for Rats to have, and Pisorf is a great way to get it. Are you really a monarch if you aren’t pushing your subjects around? Pisorf is important because of how it interacts with corrosion. If you apply lots of corrosion to a monster and push it into another monster, you’ll deal the corrosion damage to both of them!

🧀 Burndayraz - No matter what build you’re cooking up, you’ll need fire. Burndayraz is great for the Rat as it allows you to trigger your corrosion damage without getting attacked, making it a great finisher for your combos! The Burning debuff can also be useful for regen fighting.

These are the main glyphs you’ll be holding onto, especially with your limited inventory space from Regal Size and amazing boost from conversions. One other glyph you can consider taking to the endgame is Cyddstep, which will let you build more corrosion and survive monster that kill you in a single hit. Bysseps is average because you aren’t a striker (through it can help reduce resistances), Halpmeh heals for less due to your lower base health, and Weytwut is mainly used for mobility which you can get from Pisorf or the Bear Mace.

Items

🧀 Bear Mace and Whurrgarbl - More knockback and regen fighting synergies, yay! The Bear Mace makes your attacks knockback your targets, and much like with Pisorf, the Bear Mace will let the Rat deal its corrosion damage to both targets. What is different about the Bear Mace is that the corrosion damage is triggered twice: once when you hit the enemy and a second time when they get knocked into the other enemy. Whurrgarbl applies burning to enemies on hit. Burning makes monsters regenerate less health, which allows you to regen fight better and kill higher level enemies faster.

🧀 Resistance items - As you’ll be taking lots of hits, items that reduce your damage taken are amazing. If you don’t want to prepare Bear Mace from the blacksmith, the Shield is a great option. The Shield reduces your damage taken from attacks by 2. Platemail is also a great find, as it reduces your damage taken by 2 per level at the cost of always attacking second. This is a great trade deal - perhaps the greatest in the history of trade deals - as we don’t mind attacking second because we’re finishing with Burndayraz anyways!.

Some other top purchase worth mentioning are the Venom Dagger to help with regen fighting, the Elven Boots to boost your mana for spells and Magic Resistance, and finally the Bloody Sigil to keep you healthy. Happy shopping!

Combos

🧀 Flambé - Corrode a couple times and then Fireball to finish (for anyone who likes their steaks well done.) If you want to fireball twice in a row, make sure to prepare Mana boosters!

🧀 Marinate and Tenderise - Marinate a high health low damage enemy, like a Meat Man, then use them as a makeshift weapon. Make sure to not over tenderise while pushing them around like a bowling ball of death!

🧀 Molecular Cooking - The hardest recipe and top combo that can help you double kill bosses at level one! Mix in damage reduction (or Cydstepp from your local store), Burndayraz, and plenty of Corrosion to prepare. Build up that signature corrosive flavour, tenderise and flambe, then finish with 20 minutes in the Pisorf oven. Add Imawal to taste.

And that's it for today's class post! If you want to be the Rat Monarch destined to build their empire, make sure to wishlist Desktop Dungeons: Rewind!

The Warlord - Exploring character classes in Desktop Dungeons: Rewind #5

In the spirit of the season, we’re going to be looking at our favourite Desktop Dungeons class with death protection: the Warlords. They are the best users of Cydstepp, a high cost glyph which allows the caster to survive a hit that would otherwise kill them. Warlords ride on the edge of life and death to show their foes that they aren’t going down without a fight.

I’ve gotten a Warlord to do this class breakdown, but I must warn you, they seem to have gotten into New Year’s Resolutions a little early and… Have become a little obsessed with exercise.

Without further ado, I introduce the Warlord!

Abilities

🏋️‍♀️ Courageous – Drinking a Mana Potion will cause the next attack to do +30% damage
🏋️‍♀️ Determined – +30% bonus damage whenever below half health
🏋️‍♀️ Defiant – Starts with the CYDSTEPP glyph, always castable

Warlords have found a way to be the strongest and most well-rounded Striker class in Desktop Dungeons: Rewind, and that is HIMT (High Instensity Mortality Training.) While most Strikers find joy in exercising their weapon swinging abilities and then recovering before continuing to fight, Warlords push themselves to the brink of collapse in a short amount of time. Remember, if you aren’t vomiting, you aren’t doing it right!

Kin Choices

🏋️‍♀️ Gnomes – Gnomes are our WOD (Warlord of the Day.) Their ability to create Mana Potions synergises with the Warlord’s Courageous trait, while also giving them enough mana to Cydstepp permanent death or severe injury once more! Mana potions are also very hydrating and one of the easiest drinks to keep down!
🏋️‍♀️ Orcs – We’re not about numbers around here. We’re about functional monster un-aliving ability! But the Orc has… Numbers that we simply can’t ignore. The Orc’s conversion bonus of +2 base damage synergises incredibly well with the Determined and Courageous traits. Now that’s functional!
🏋️‍♀️ Elves – The true masters of AMCAP (As Many Cydtepps as Possible)! When combined with the ways of Mystera, whose machinations are unknown and unknowable, their bonus mana from conversions can help Warlords use Cydstepp 3 times in a session! Now that’ll keep you going!

As a side note, you too can become a Warlord! Almost all the kin in Desktop Dungeons have tried it a couple times and come out functionally fitter than before, Dwarves and Humans in particular. Don’t let the stereotypes hold you back, we’re very accepting and not insane at all!!

Gods

🏋️‍♂️ Mystera Annur– The God that other Strikers won’t listen to. “You need to be sensible!” they say, “Worship Taurog or Earthmother, it’s healthier.” Some of them even claim that “20% of Warlords end up with serious physical injuries.” They’re wrong. Mystera helps Warlords turn their habit of being near death into piety, and that piety into being near death more often. Doesn’t that sound perfect! Mystic Balance makes Cydstepp cost less, Magic increases your mana, and Refreshment can keep you going for just a bit longer.
🏋️‍♂️ Jehora Jeheyu – Some say Mystera's advice is weird and harming our health… I can’t wait to hear what they say about Jehora. So what you’re weakened, poisoned, corroded, and mana burned? Gonna cry?? Boost Health and Boost Mana can help Warlords stay low without dying and cast more Cydstepps! Jehora Jeheyu really is the most generous and unknowable cosmic horror.
🏋️‍♂️ Glowing Guardian – We don’t need too much training equipment, and Mr. GG agrees! While he’s not our first choice of trainer, Humility gives us more experience, Consecrated Strike can help crack through physical resistances, and Absolution helps us stay up a little longer! Though he’s against us drinking our uhh… Potions. So we don’t stick around too long.

While these are the best places for Warlords to worship, any box will do! Earthmother is onto something with her diet plans, Binlor builds our resistances, and Pacty supports quietly. Anything but Tikki Tooki or Taurog! Warlords want to get hit, and Tikki doesn’t like that… Really good Warlords can work out around this, but it’s not recommended for beginners. Taurog doesn't like casting spells, which can make using Cydstepp difficult without being punished.

Glyphs

🏋️‍♂️ Cydstepp – The bread and butter (proverbially, we don’t eat those) of the Warlord way! Defiant allows Warlords to cast this Glyphs while below 50% HP, letting them to chain attacks together while on the edge of mortality with the Determined trait active the entire time. You’ll be using most of your mana on this Glyph, so make sure to always precast it before exploring!
🏋️‍♂️ Imawal – Damn right I am! Warlords tend to punch above their weight to an unreasonable degree, and so Imawal’s Bonus Experience can become a great gateway to functional high level monster slaying.
🏋️‍♂️ Getindare – When the last hit will kill you, hit them first! When combining Getindare with Cydstepp Warlord can pull off some nasty combos. You string of exercises will look something like this: attack once to get below half health and activate Determined, then attack again to break Death Protection, finally cast Cydstepp and attack again. At this point, you won’t have enough mana to Cydstepp death, but a swift blow to their skull with Getindare might just do the job to floor them before they floor you!

As it is with all Strikers, Bysseps is also good. We know the Barbarians are fighting over if it’s right to use Bysseps or not, claiming it might be unhealthy, but Mystera tells us it’s perfectly safe! And we trust Mystera above all. You probably won’t be holding onto Burndayraz for too long because you’ll be spending your mana on Cydstepp.

Well, what are you waiting for!? Use all of that high intensity energy to smash that wishlist button so you can be functionally fit with all of your new Warlord friends!

COLOURED SMEARS DUNGEON FLOOR!

Alright Berserker, lets calm down a bit and look at the intricate complicated ways this class can pulverize any who oppose them and... Oh wait you'd prefer if the Berserker takes over this episode?

Yes? Really?

Fine, take it away...

YES! BERSERKER WILL START BY SHOWING OFF WHAT BERSERKER CAN DO!

ABILITIES

🔪 Bloodlust - deals an extra 20% damage on normal attacks against higher-level squishy meat bags.

🔪 Mage slay - all glyph-activated abilities cost an extra 2 mana because can’t read, but starting attack bonus is +20% because big weapon.

As we can see, Berserker does everything good!

Bloodlust very good! Bigger they are, harder they fall and give Berserker more funny level numbers. Serves them right for thinking they stronger than Berserker. No one is stronger than Berserker!

Mage Slay might look like bad, but actually it’s very good! This is because magic is for stupid dumb dumbs. Why use Glyphs when puny enemies can catch these hands? Some Berserker use Bysseps to get stronger, but some think it invalidates competition and puts Berserker health at risk. Unfortunately, they keep beating us in judicial fist-fight, so we can’t ban it.

Spell Kill very good! Berserkers can show even strongest magic nerds that they are no match for raw fury of swole arms! Spell Kill and Bloodlust make so they always die.

GODS

On rare occasion it happens, Berserker can recognize when things are stronger than Berserker. Sometimes Berserker must use powerful legs to carry out bidding of gods so that Berserker can splat monsters better!

Here are Berserker's favourite Gods:

🔪 Taurog – Angry Fire Man best God! Taurog enjoy when Berserker converts stupid Glyphs and gives Berserker enemy-pulpification instruments! Love Taurog. As Taurog always said: “live, laugh, gratuitous violence.

🔪 Glowing Guardian – Big Blue Beard Man good god! Humility makes Berserker look lower level, which very good because of Bloodlust. Jokes on them, Berserker doesn't know what humility even means!

🔪 Earthmother – Healthy Salad Mom good god! Vine Form make Berserker tankier to help hit enemy more, and Entanglement very good for hitting things first! Spinach makes forearms massive.

KIN

All Berserker good Berserker! Some Berserker just more good Berserker.

🔪 Orc – Orc great Berserker! with Mage Slay and Bloodlust giving percentage increase, base damage from conversion very very good! But always make sure to not become level 10, otherwise Bloodlust won’t work.

🔪 Human – Human good Berserker! Orc better than Human earlier in dungeon, but Human better later! make sure to get murder-equipment for base damage so that you can make big numbers.

🔪 Halfling – Halfling good Berserker! Small people somehow always very violent. Concentrated rage! Halfling good Berserker because resistances make health potions better! Halfling can make health potion, letting Berserker hit things longer. Trisword also very good for Halfling Berserker!

The Thief - Exploring character classes in Desktop Dungeons: Rewind #3

The thief is one of the first unlockable classes, as well as being one of the best pickups for the early dungeons. They synergize well with humans and orcs early on in the game and have high adaptability that comes from their Hoarder trait. They can find more boosters, glyphs, and shops to play around while conserving tiles.

Let's check out their bonuses:

  • Stabber - Deals an extra 30% damage to enemies with full health
  • Hoarder - +33% more items on the dungeon map
  • Survivor - All Health Potions and Mana Potions restore both health and mana

The Stabber trait also allows them to become incredibly powerful with levels as the percentage damage increase scales. Having more potions in the Dungeon due to the Hoarder trait and makes the Survivor trait even stronger as all potions restore both health and mana!

But wait! There are even more cool tricks up the Thief's thieving sleeves.

Glyph Usage

Bysseps

💎Thieves are great users of Bysseps: make your first attack hit even harder, adding percentage scaling on top of percentage scaling like an aggressive lasagne!
💎If you can tank a single hit from a higher-level enemy, combine this with Getindare and you have an amazing 2 shot combo which looks a little bit like this - Bysseps > attack > Bysseps > Getindare > attack and kill.

Pisorf

💎Pisorf spamming can be particularly strong if you're playing the Gnome (for mana potion refills) or Orc (for base damage scaling).
💎This can be absolutely insane if you worship Binlor for a free Bysseps after a wall is destroyed.

God worship

Binlor Ironshield

💎If you're planning on spamming Pisorf, Binlor is always an amazing choice for farming piety and stacking resistance boons.
💎Stone Form can help you to stack bonus damage if you don't have Bysseps.
💎Stone Heart can be good for cracking through physical resists.

Earthmother

💎Scaling is important, and it's easier to scale when you have more HP. Vine Form is super good for this, and lets you get more value out of potions.
💎Entanglement can also help you to sneak in more hits against higher-level enemies, blasting you ahead in levels.

Kin matches

Damage Kin

💎Humans and Orcs can scale very hard with the Thief's Stabber bonus. With their conversions of +10% damage and +2 base damage, you can scale to the point where 2 shotting a monster 3 levels higher than you is possible.
💎In early game dungeons when scaling is easier, they are an amazing choice. However, in later dungeons, scaling to a point where you can roll enemies is not that easy, and Potion Kin becomes easier to win with.

Potion Kin

💎Gnomes and Halflings are both kin that creates potions with their conversions. Gnomes create mana potions, and Halflings create health potions.
💎The Rogue's Survivor ability allows them to use potions super effectively and can help them through the early game.
💎It is worth noting that potions restore their primary attribute by 40% and the secondary by 20% (health potions restore 40% of health and 20% of mana), so Halflings do better early game with leveling, and Gnomes do better late game with spell spamming.

The Thief is one of the most favoured classes in the game by our legacy players and we hope you got an idea of why the Thief might be an option for your preferred play style. Is sneaking not your style? STICK AROUND FOR NEXT WEEK WHERE WE TALK IN ALL CAPS.

Desktop Dungeons: Rewind - Exploring character classes #2 The Sorcerer

It's time again for us to introduce another class that you can use for whatever schemes you have planned as kingdom conqueror.

Sorcerers are very well-rounded, tanky, and deal both magical and physical damage. They have a preference for physical attacks because they can regenerate from casting spells in essence transit. Let's unravel the magic behind what this class can do!

Unlocking
Unlocked at magical tower level 2 after the wizard

Bonuses
⚈ Essence transit - every mana point spent regenerates 2 health
⚈ Arcane knowledge - +5 starting mana
⚈ Mana shield - deal one magic damage (pe r character lv) whenever an opponent hits you

Glyph usage
⚈ Sorcerers use all the glyphs very well because of their healing
⚈ Fireball is great because it regenerates lots of health and deals lots of damage

Mystera Annur
⚈ Very easy to accrue large amounts of piety as they reward you for glyph casting.
⚈ Mystic Balance allows you to fling more fireballs and gain health from lower-cost spells.
⚈ Refreshment allows you to keep your mana up when fighting bosses.

Jehora Jeheyu
⚈ Boost Health helps with fighting higher-level enemies. Where previously you might die in one hit, you cannot get hit and heal with essence transit
⚈ Chaos Avatar can be used to heal during a boss fight.

Kin matches
Most things work well due to the versatility of sorcerers:
🤝 Gnomes and elves work for more magic damage-oriented builds because of their mana bonuses.
🤝 Dwarfs are a good pairing because of their higher health, making regen-fighting more efficient.
🤝 Humans are another good option because of their % attacks.

We hope that you've learned a little bit more about the Sorcerer and don't forget to follow us as we'll be sharing more classes and other fun reveals along the road.
