END OF YEAR UPDATE

Hello!

So as you may already know, Bonus Stage Publishing is helping me to finish the game and spread the word. Feels very nice to have people around me who have done this before!

This change delayed the release a bit, and the new date is in early 2023. The good thing is that I now have a little bit of extra time to polish the game. So here's couple of new special things that have been added already:

  • DIFFICULTY LEVELS
There's now three difficulty levels to choose from. They don't affect the puzzles, but change how the survival / RPG stuff works. There's even Ironman mode, if you want extra tension and avoid save scumming.

  • TWO NEW MUSIC TRACKS
More great music from Troy Sterling Nies that add atmosphere in the game.

  • CHARACTER BAR STATUS PROGRESSION SYMBOLS
The lines below show the progress to the next status phase.

This will hopefully make protecting Walter easier. This feature was a suggestion from a player of the demo, so I can't take all the credit :)

  • BETTER TUTORIALS AND INSTRUCTIONS
New players should have an easier time figuring out how things work. For example, finding study books should now be more intuitive.

Before I leave, here's a previously unpublished picture from the game. I can reveal that it is not the ending. I'm not going to spoil that!

Take care, talk to you soon!

Prepare for the Lovecraftian Fever Dreams: May-Eve and Witches Are Coming Soon

Prepare for the Lovecraftian Fever Dreams: May-Eve and Witches Are Coming Soon

Finnish studio with an award-winning lovecraftian short movie announces lovecraftian game The Dreams in the Witch House to be released in early 2023!

Lapland, Finland - October 27th 2022 - Finnish game, animation, and film making studio / one man wonder Atom Brain Games are announcing their debut title The Dreams in the Witch House to be released in early 2023. The adventure game is based on the short story written by H.P. Lovecraft.

In the game the player has to survive the nightly terrors for two months, and finally face the May-Eve witch ritual. The game combines RPG and “open world” features to the traditional adventure game genre. The world is alive, and the game play is nonlinear. Many of the elements are generated randomly, so each play through will be different.

“Couple years ago when I re-read The Dreams in the Witch House by H.P. Lovecraft, I quickly realised that it would make a perfect survival adventure game. Unlike with my previous attempts to finish making a video game, this time my motivation was strong, because of my love for the source material” says the developer Antti Laakso.

While being an avid H.P. Lovecraft fan, Antti is also a creative powerhouse. Besides co-directing an H.P. Lovecraft film festival’s award winning short film Sound from the Deep, working as an filmmaker, animator and a teacher, he is now a game developer. For the game’s overall creepy feels, Antti teamed up with another fan favourite of Lovecraft genre; Troy Sterling Nies has made the soundtrack for the game.

Features and gameplay in a nutshell:

  • Unique mix of adventure game and open world survival game
  • You have 60 days to prepare for the May-Eve witch sabbath
  • Day / evening / night -cycles
  • RPG elements: health, sanity, occult & maths skills
  • Random city activities and encounters
  • Creeping tension: otherworldly threats intensify gradually
  • Several endings depending on player’s actions with 10–20 hours of playtime
  • Plenty of detailed animation and visual effects
  • Original soundtrack by genre favourite Troy Sterling Nies

The game will be published by Bonus Stage Publishing in early 2023. “Bonus Stage Publishing is helping me to finish the game and spread the word. I'm very excited and relieved that I have professionals guiding me through this nerve-wrecking period. Feels good to share the load!” tells Antti Laakso about working together with a publisher and bringing the game out to the world.

AUTUMN UPDATE

Hello! The year is rapidly nearing the end, so a quick status update.

Dreams in the Witch House release date is still the vague 2022. I just finished the new version for testers, and all the key elements are now in place. The work still continues with adding missing sound effects and bug fixing. So hopefully things go well and I can announce the release date soon-ish. It's starting to get exciting!

Meanwhile, here's a pretty picture you can enjoy. You won't find this room in Lovecraft's story, but I think many of you will know the general location.

Take care, talk to you soon!

DEMO 1.05 UPDATE

Next Fest is now over, and I want to thank everyone who played / commented / wishlisted the game!

A couple of new bugs were reported during the festival, so this 1.05 update addresses them. This will probably be the last update for the demo, unless something significant comes up. Now the work on the full version continues!

CHANGELOG:

- Fixed the crash when Mrs. Dombrowski leaves Walter's room after cleaning it
- Fixed Walter's comment when pressing the "CANCEL" button at the Photography Store
- "Task completed" text now only comes up once when Walter closes the rathole
- Fixed Walter's placement in the Downtown, so that he doesn't get stuck when the Paperboy spawns in the morning
- Map hotkey disabled when in the main menu
- Default graphics driver changed to OpenGL
- Wrong exam answer penalty reduced to 0.5 points (was 1.0 points)

Save games from version 1.04 are compatible, EXCEPT that the time of day will be reseted to dawn. In some special situations this could cause problems, but reloading the room should fix them. If you wish to keep using the previous 1.04 version, you can enable it in Steam library: Properties -> Betas -> 1.04

Thanks!
