Devlog #37

PSA: Due to technical limitations, we had to limit the number of frog hats given to 1 per device.

Greetings! The Steam Summer Sale has kicked off, and we're thrilled to invite all newcomers to the captivating Longvinter Island. There's already a wealth of content for you to delve into. Plus, we've created an opportunity for you to snag your own hat just by playing. For the explorers among you, try venturing across the expansive map to unearth the hidden frog hat. Remember, these special hats are available for a limited time, so don't miss out!

In today's devlog, we'll be discussing what we aim to introduce and enhance in our next update. While we don't have a specific release date at the moment, we ask for your patience and promise it'll be worth the wait.

Caves

Our primary focus recently has been developing a dynamic and engaging cave system. Designed to echo the established bunkers' mechanics, these new, randomly generated caves promise to add a fresh layer to your gameplay. They will pave the way for mining mechanics, the discovery of various ores, and the introduction of smelting. Alongside this, we're rolling out a unique garden set, craftable from multiple metals, allowing for distinctive aesthetic variations. To guide you through this expanded gameplay, we're introducing a dedicated quest line centered around the caves. Dive in and experience this exciting new chapter!

Wolves Unleashed

After several tantalizing hints and a six-month wait, we're thrilled to announce that wolves are finally joining the game! These new additions will form part of the hunting compendium, marking our first venture into hostile wildlife. We're eager to see how you'll engage in combat with these creatures. But that's not all - these wolves aren't just foes, but also potential allies. You'll be able to use them as mounts for faster land travel. Stay tuned for details on how you can obtain one of these beasts!

Additional Features Preview

In addition to the major features we've been sharing, we've got a host of other enhancements planned for you. These include the ability to name containers and sort items within them for easier inventory management. We're also reworking the equipment tab for a more user-friendly interface that offers a better view of your character. New elements such as a passive fishing net/trap and more are on the horizon. As always, we'll roll out these updates first on our experimental server to ensure thorough testing and bug fixing before the broad release on other servers. Stay tuned for more updates!

Devlog #36

Greetings! Welcome to our latest Friday devlog! It's been a little while since our last one, and I (Sven) apologize for that. I took a short summer break, which meant a pause in our devlog updates. But fear not, the rest of the team has been diligently working towards our next content update even in my absence! So, let's dive into what's been going on behind the scenes and what exciting developments you can look forward to.

Modding support

Implementing modding support proved to be quite the task, demanding numerous hours to troubleshoot the plethora of challenges that came with our chosen plugin. Nevertheless, the effort was worthwhile. It's been a month since we've launched this feature in an invite-only test phase, and the creative outputs have been simply delightful to witness.

We're looking forward to seeing these imaginative modifications soon on our modded server list. Remember to explore these servers in their designated category. By clicking on the three dots icon (…), you can expand the server information to view all installed mods.

Here are a few highlights from the world of mods:

Modding Support

The final version of our modding support is now ready and we're planning to distribute it gradually through Google Forms submissions. Just fill out the form and we will give access to the GitHub repository.

What Can You Achieve with Modding?

To begin, you'll need the source build Unreal Engine 4.26 to access the project editor. We've made specific elements modifiable by adding a "replaceable actor" component to the items you're permitted to modify. Here's an overview of what you can currently achieve with modding:

- Introduce new items to the game, such as food, plants, weapons, and additional placeable objects for your house
- Customize homes with varying appearances and colors, or upgrade turrets instead of electrical systems, and more
- Create new in-game events, like air drops
- Make alterations to Longvinter Island; while custom maps are not yet functional, you can still manipulate the map by spawning objects and executing server code
- Modify the player character by adjusting running speed, enabling a fully rotatable camera, and adding custom character models. Since we use the Unreal Engine's default mannequin character skeleton, you can easily introduce new models as player characters, as well as custom UI elements
- Replace chests to offer improved loot or increased quantities of existing loot

As someone who has spent countless hours modding games like Skyrim and Fallout, I'm thrilled to see what unique creations you'll produce with our modding tools. We'll review your ideas submitted through the forms and create guided tutorials for the most popular ones, helping you get started as quickly as possible!

When is the next update arriving?

Before we release the next major update, we'll first apply a hotfix to address the remaining issues and ensure that modding support functions smoothly. This will also resolve any critical bugs still present in the game. Following that, we'll start working on the forthcoming update, which will prioritize your feedback, implement quality of life enhancements, and incorporate your suggestions.

We've already begun developing features like customizable chest names and the ability to quickly sort items within chests by value, rarity, and category. Additionally, we'll be introducing the highly anticipated and previously postponed hostile wolf to the game. As we finalize our objectives for this update, we'll share more details about the planned changes. Furthermore, we will continue to work on fixing bugs and incorporating the quality of life improvements you've recommended.

We appreciate the feedback and input from our players and are committed to providing the best possible gaming experience for all. Thank you for your continued support!

Devlog #34

Welcome to Friday Devlog!

Modding support

We made every effort to have modding support ready for the launch of this update, but unfortunately, we couldn't complete all the desired features. We also didn't want to delay the update any further, as server progress was wiped due to update requirements. We saw that many players were eagerly awaiting the wipe more than the update itself. We apologize for the issues encountered at launch and are working diligently to address them. In the coming weeks, we'll be resolving the remaining significant issues and adding modding support. Let's also address some other concerns that have been raised. In the meantime, we encourage players to start preparing by installing the required source build of Unreal Engine 4.26. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to work towards delivering the best possible gameplay experience for our community.

Currently known issues

We've received reports of a bug that emerged since introducing controller support. This issue causes characters to halt their movement when eating or interacting with items in the inventory. We have already taken steps to mitigate this problem and will continue working to resolve all instances where it occurs.

Another significant concern you've shared is related to gun recoil while moving. In version 1.10b, we transitioned to a new character model using Unreal Engine's skeleton, simplifying the animation process. Previously, movement recoil was solely managed through animation. We decided to switch to a random spread calculation for better control over recoil. While we intend to maintain a slight accuracy reduction when moving to give retreating players a better chance of survival, we plan to adjust the recoil next week. We'll closely monitor your feedback and continue fine-tuning until we reach a satisfactory balance for all players.

Results of Player Survey on Official Server Wipes

Recently, we conducted a survey to gather feedback from players on server wipes. We received 197 responses, and here are the key results regarding the server wipes:

Do you want all official servers to have wipes?

Yes: 54.8%
No: 45.2%

Would you rather have:

All official servers wiped: 38.1%
All PVP and monthly wipe servers wiped: 9.1%
All PVE and monthly wipe servers wiped: 16.2%
Only separate monthly wipe servers: 36.5%

How often should the Normal servers be wiped?

Every month: 18.6%
Every 3 months: 41.5%
Every 6 months: 39.8%

After analyzing the results of the player survey, we are thinking about making some changes to our wipe policy. We would be keeping the Monthly wipe servers, which will reset every month, and we would be wiping the other official servers every 6 months.

We believe that this approach strikes a good balance between the desires of our player base and the need to maintain a stable and fair gaming environment. Players who enjoy the frequent reset of progress and the challenge of starting fresh can continue to play on the Monthly wipe servers, while those who prefer a longer-term experience can enjoy the other official servers.

We appreciate the feedback and input from our players and are committed to providing the best possible gaming experience for all. Thank you for your continued support!
