Sidestep Legends is releasing into Early Access today!

Today is the Early Access release of Sidestep Legends. Hope you are as excited about it as I am. At 7:00 PM GMT+1 is when I will push the Release button so be ready! It will cost $2.99 or your regional equivalent so hopefully all of you that are interested in the game will afford it. The price will increase a bit at or just before the full release so if you don't mind buying an Early Access game now is good time to strike.
Compared to the demo the Early Access release includes 3 new characters, 2 new maps, 3 new abilities and a bunch of new upgrades. The currently planned content for the full release mostly revolves around more of these things and I also have some other ideas of improvements and types of content. But most importantly this is where you come in. I wanted to do Early Access for this game to be able to steer it in a direction that the players want it to go. So feel free to join our discord and discuss things you like and don't like in the game with me and other players. And I will take those discussions into account when deciding on what new content and features or changes to make in game. I will also check the Steam community discussions, but I find it more efficient to have discussions on Discord.

Demo patch notes 0.4.4

This update does not include much changes in the gameplay since that work is going into the Early Access release. But since I have been working on adding controller support and remapping of controls for the Early Access release I thought I might as well release that as a demo update.

Features/Improvements



  • Added controller support
  • Added support for rebinding controls
  • If using weapon dash on a target out of range the character will now queue the command and move towards the target
  • Improved responsiveness when using Weapon Dash on a new target while Weapon Dash is active


Bugfixes



  • You can no longer unlock upgrades that are not available in the game yet in the skill tree

Demo patch notes 0.4.3 and Early Access release date announcement!

I am very excited to announce that Sidestep Legends will release in Early Access on January 9th 2023.
There is also a new update to the demo to celebrate this. It is a smaller update this time and most coming updates to the demo will be as well, since most of my time now will be spent creating content for the Early Access release.

Features/Improvements



  • Added more things to the map. The map is not almost complete the lower left area of the map will get some more love before the Early Access release though.
  • Added minion death animation


Bugfixes



  • Fixed error in description of Weapon Dash upgrade
  • Fixed a bug causing weapon dash to make it possible to get stuck in terrain and sometimes travel forever into one direction
  • Fixed a bug causing the clone buff to not appear when creating clones from weapon throw or stealth
  • Fixed a bug causing channel heal buff to be shown for a split second after blink was used
  • Fixed so camera cannot be moved outside the map when unlocked
  • Fixed a bug causing the Armor heal buff and the Stealth heal buff to never disappear
  • Fixed a bug causing the weapon to not render with the stealth effect during stealth

Demo patch notes 0.4.2

Another smaller update, but it should improve the gameplay quite a bit with the more interesting upgrades being available earlier on.

Features/Improvements



  • New ability, Weapon dash. Dash to through a target minion and deal 40 damage to it. If the target dies the cooldown of Weapon Dash is reset.
  • Combo upgrade for Weapon Dash and Hardened Shield. Using Weapon Dash grants a stack of Hardened Skin which increases the armor for a short duration stacking up to 10 times.
  • Combo upgrade for Weapon Dash and Channel Heal. Weapon Dash now heals for 3 health when hitting an enemy.
  • UI showing active buffs and debuffs .
  • Added help text for how to move and attack at the start of the game


Balance changes



  • Lowered the speed of the root spell
  • Changed the requirements for all combo upgrades to unlock as soon as yuo have both abilities unlocked instead of when both is unlocked and the main ability is fully upgraded
  • Added a short delay before minions can attack after they are in within range of attack


Bugfixes



  • Right click now works to attack a specific target
  • Fixed stun effect not animating when stunned by boss
  • Fixed a bug causing the upgrade button to disappear on some upgrades after refunding upgrades in the skill tree

Demo patch notes 0.4.1

This is a smaller update as most of the work lately has been more behinds the scenes preparing for future updates and the full version. But I managed to do some additions and improvements to the demo as well.
The gif below shows the new splash attack upgrade in action.

Features/Improvements



  • Added more shininess to the renderer
  • Added some more stuff on the top right part of the map. More love to the other areas of the map is coming.
  • Added new unique passive, Attack Speed. Increase the attack speed by 150%. Available as a boss reward
  • Added new unique passive, Splash Damage. Basic attacks deal damage in an area around the target hit . Available as a boss reward
  • Reworked the skill tree, more upgrades will be added there in the future
  • Added option to control the character with WASD instead of the mouse
  • Added tips on the pause screen
  • Reworked the system for handling large amounts of xp crystals on the ground. Crystals should no longer stop spawning when killing minions even if there is a large amount of xp crystals on the map


Balance changes



  • Increased the health threshold trigger for Mirror Image passive fom 40% to 50%
  • Increased the number of clones spawned by the Mirror Image passive from 1 to 5
  • Increased the movement speed per 1% maximum health missing for berserker's feet from 0.2% to 0.5%
  • Increased the cooldown reduction per 1% maximum health missing for cooldown reduction passive from 0.2% to 0.5%
  • Increased the base healing of Channel Heal from 5 per second to 8 per second
  • Reduced the chance for minions to upgrade in the earlier waves


Bugfixes



  • Fixed a bug causing the run animation of clones to not play properly
  • Fixed a bug causing the Boss to get stuck sometimes
  • Fixed a bug with targeting minions with A-move from certain distances
  • Fixed a bug causing the blink clone to spawn at the target position instead of the current position

Demo patch notes 0.4.0

This update adds classic MOBA PVE combat. Fight against ever spawning minions and kill them before they become too many and overrun you.

Features/Improvements



  • Improved visuals of health bars
  • Minions, will spawn at the start of the roads towards the edges of the map. If they manage to walk through the whole path they will upgrade in power and size and chase the player until they die.
  • Basic attacks. Typical MOBA auto attacks. Use it to kill minions or attack the boss. Can be upgrades in skill tree and through various in game upgrades.
  • Throw ability. Throw your weapon in target direction and deal damage to every unit it passes through
  • Swing ability. Swing your weapon around you and deal damage to every unit hit
  • Upgrades for Throw ability and Swing ability with damage, area, distance and a few combos with other abilities.


Balance changes



  • Increased the speed of the hook
  • Several ability upgrades have been reduced in total count but increased in power per upgrade
  • Increased the XP needed per level for higher levels
  • Increased base health from 150 to 180
  • Increased boss health from 1000 to 3000
  • Increased trap damage from 100 to 300


Bugfixes



  • Fixed a bug with walking animation not playing while moving short distances
  • Fixed some parts of the UI not working properly on ultra-wide screens

Demo patch notes 0.3.8

This updates adds a new ability and fixes the UI for ultra-wide screens.

  • Added menu music
  • Made upgrade buttons disabled for a short while after appearing to help avoid selecting an upgrade by mistake when playing with the left mouse button
  • New ability Hardened Shield. Gain armor for a short duration
  • Upgrades for Hardened Shield ability
  • An upgrade for Channel Heal when Hardened Shield ability is unlocked

  • Fixed a bug causing the player to rotate weirdly at some angles
  • Fixed some menus not being usable on ultra-wide screens

  • Fixed obelisks and vases not casting shadows or receiving shadows correctly

A small update to fix a bug and some bonus stuff

  • New upgrade Clone does not break stealth.
  • New upgrade Spawn clone at current position when using Blink

  • You can now move around your abilities in the hot bar when the game is paused. Just drag and drop.

  • Fixed a bug causing the boss to sometimes spawn outside of the map
