Community asked for huts. We gave them huts!



Hello fans and followers, here's Marco again, Project Lead of Stone Rage. The last few weeks and months we have been working on and off to get the project in a smooth state. We've been fixing bugs, fixing crashes, adding content, thinking about more game design content and most importantly, listening to all of you — our community — on discord. We are actively listening and discussing with our community on discord. We still have lots of work left to get the game in a state we are happy with. We will be focusing on tribes and player interaction the next few weeks., ranged and melee combat rework, tribe system, perhaps a taunt system and if time allows we can fit in a very simple decay system too. And there is plenty more to come.

The most requested feature from our community... huts. We've added in upgradeable huts with different construction stages and snap-able doors for base protection. Build your little hut village. Development renderings and in-game screenshots below. Let us know what kind of huts you want to see!

April Update - Pre-Alpha Playtesting has started!



Hello fans and followers, here's Marco, Project Lead of Stone Rage. YES, we are alive! The last few weeks and months have been quite busy for us. We have been working on and off on the project and completely reworked our entire coding foundation (as mentioned in earlier update posts). Our game now runs better than ever due to our reworking. The rework was a much needed step in order to deliver smooth and fluent gameplay experiences for you. Instead of releasing the game in a buggy and laggy state we decided to make sure it runs great before giving it into players hands (however it still could be laggy on your end - we are still testing and fixing).

What's the next step now? We have officially started early alpha playtesting with our community on discord. If you want to be part of our tester team, follow the guideline below, and contact us with why you would be a good fit to test our game. Help us find crashes, bugs and add your personal wishes for "Stone Rage". We have around 50 steam keys to give away! Join us!

How to join us as an early playtester:

Before release on EA:
  • Daily test sessions until mid of May 2020
  • Fixing all current bugs and crashes from current playsessions (top priority)

  • On May 17th we'll see how far we've gotten with the games progress and discuss a potential release date on early access

Inventory System
Fully fleshed out inventory system with tons of systems and hidden features. The inventory system is by far the biggest system in our game. We have different item-related features such as splitting, placing, merging, and dropping out items from your inventory. Clothing equipment, construction, crafting, teaming (tribe, to be added later) is heavily tied into the inventory system.

Farming and Harvesting
Our harvest system works with either instant pickups, harvesting via timer and farming with tools is the most effective resulting in biggest drop of materials. During Early Access we are going to think about adding in different material-based tools such as flint tools next to stone tools. Each with different advantages and disadvantages.

Footstep System & Impact System
Walking on different surface types and materials give different sounds as well as varying visual effects and decals depending on the terrain or material you walk on. Hitting different material-based items also show different impact marks. An already complex system where we can later go crazy with.
Example: flint tools giving different impacts than stone tools.


Tier 2 Cooking: Custom Recipes
In StoneRage you can either consume raw foods like vegetables and fruits, or you can use our complex tier cooking mechanic where you can cook different types of meat combined with other ingredients such as leaves, roots, or berries together to result in different stat boosts or overall bigger food consumption. This system will be worked on more and more during Early Access.

All human weapons are finalized and ingame, some of which will be reworked and polished later during Early Access. Neanderthal weapons are in the works.

Scam Accusations:
Recently we have gotten quite a lot of scam accussations on our discussion boards. To clarify, we have never received any money from anyone in terms of game sales (exception: indiegogo crowdfunding campaign back from 2013, where we made 1k in total). We do accept donations from people who really want donate to us but this is entirely optional. I hope this helps others to understand our current situation better. Thank you!

September Update! Accepting donations for development

Hello fans and followers, here's Marco Muellner, Project Lead of Stone Rage. Unfortunately our Community Manager Zac Knapp had to leave us, that's why I'm writting this update myself to give everyone heads up on where we are at with our development at the moment. First of all I'd like to apologize for our very little communication on our steam forums the last weeks and months. It has been quiet and rough here at the indie studio Mountainwheel Games, as we were trying to find a good, reliable programmer who can help us with the two biggest and most important game features, such as construction and AI animals. But, the good news is, we have found one talented programmer (Kenny) already. We are looking for more programmers to join us and then we are set and ready to start more testing sessions with all our new features and assets. If you are a talented programmer and are interested in working with us on Stone Rage, check the bottom of our update text for contact details!

Update on AI & Construction:
Our newest programmer Kenny has started work on the AI for animals. He has started out with an AI animal spawner which basically spawns animals all around the map with different parameters telling when, where and under what conditions animals spawn. Depending on where you are at on the huge map, animals will have different spawn rates and not all animals will be seen in every biome. AI is quite complex and needs tons of love to work properly. After that we are starting work on all of our animal blueprint classes and then we are finishing up the construction system. A lot more work needed to finish all of this. Goals and Milestones:
Our goals and milestones within the following weeks will be to finish AI, construction system, rework our website, updating our gamepedia wiki, hiring a new community manager and getting our foundation set for more testing with our discord community! Stay tuned!

2019: The Year of Stone Rage

Hope everyone has Stone Rage on their list of games to play this year because unless all of our computers and servers simultaneous combust, 2019 is the year we make it playable for everyone. But! Before we hit that point, we will hit another period of closed testing and this session is coming soon. I have been told to order a bunch of Steam keys and get ready to hand out to our community for testing. We are waiting for some final fixing, tinkering, and bug squashing before we start to invite some more people into our largely admired and envied “Testing” channel. Okay, the name isn't very catchy but that doesn't matter, we're handing out keys to play Stone Rage with all of the developers and existing testers!

Let's bring things back down just a bit. This isn't the ready for release, top of the charts version of Stone Rage... at least not yet. This is by all definition of the phrase, an Alpha test. A lot has changed in the last month, two months and even longer. The holidays for us mean family, food and gifts, much like all of you. It also means no work which actually means everyone just works more on Stone Rage. We've hit a great stride in our development and we want to keep it up! We need more help from our community to find any bugs we haven't caught, to help us stress our servers and see if we can push that performance to aching lows. Once in, you'll be in for the duration of development before we launch onto Early Access so you will have constant access to the servers and any updates we push.

On a closing note, I'd like to update everyone a bit on the development side of things, a lot of minor changes have occurred lately as well as some bug fixes that aren't quite worth mentioning here but it all leads to a greater overall experience. Aside from all the minor stuff;


  • We've had some UI changes that give a cleaner look.
  • We've begun updates on our construction system and are adding in some new structures that are shaping up quite nicely.
  • A lot of the ranged weaponry has been implemented back in and are working great, of course we will continue to tweak it.
  • Our designer has continued work on the new map and our early revisions are already looking quite good. I can't wait to show everybody more as we continue into the year.
  • Implemented some quality of life crafting changes which means the crafting system should be pretty close to finished.


I may be missing some things but this was the bulk of changes from December. This isn't meant to function as a full change log but I wanted everyone to have a good idea of how things have been progressing.

May/June Recap



Hello everyone, we wanted to take some time to let you all know what the team has been working on for the past 2 months and why we have only just started to roll out testing. We know that you are all very excited to get your hands on Stone Rage, and trust me, we are excited for you to jump in as well. However! The last thing we want is to throw this game out in the wild with the hopes of making a quick buck. We don't want Stone Rage to be extinct on arrival and so we are taking as much care as we can manage to iron out any wrinkles that we can.



Now that the general stuff is out of the way I want to give a little more information on what exactly the team has been working on. We have locked our programmer in a basement with a computer and aren't letting him out until everything is ready. Okay, not really, but he has definitely been working extremely hard. He has been knocking out bugs every day and getting Steam integration and our servers running perfectly (or at least as perfectly as we can until thousands of people try to jump in). He has been pulling some late nights for us and I'm sure he is feeling the pressure. All while I've been thinking of ways that I can make our Steam announcements more interesting!

Getting away from programming, the rest of the team has continued to keep busy. We have worked on more level design, adding more items and filling out the world. Without proper large scale testing it will be hard to determine which areas need more work so... we really need you! Aside from that, our artists have continued working on more models for the game, adding more depth and diversity to our world. A trend we hope to continue well into Early Access.

April Update

Happy April everyone!
Just a quick post from us today as we remain hard at work getting everything ready for testing. We are still making constant changes and fixes but progress is coming along smoothly. In the meantime, we wanted to give you a little progress update and let you all know what we are working on besides basic polish.



While our programmer keeps hid his head buried in his keyboard cranking out fixes, our designers are coming up with some new in game gear. We have some new clothing and armor in the works that will allow you to up your game and bring an extended level of customization to your prehistoric humanoid of choice. These new pieces are looking great and draw some inspiration from other ancient civilizations, as you can see in the concept art. We will be including different, unique pieces of clothing that can be crafted from the materials of animals you encounter, kill and skin. Now you can show the world that you took down the mighty mammoth.
