  • Fixed an issue where clicking players avatars in the Tab Menu wasn’t opening a player's Steam Profile.

  • Players will no longer be asked to rate Workshop packs that they don't have permission to view at the end of a game.

Announcing 🎟️ FRIEND PASS + EVERYTHING IS BETTER! 🎉

Hello all! Let’s get to the big news...

We’re proud to announce our final Early Access milestone - the Trivia Tricks Friend Pass! Friend Pass will allow you to invite 7 friends into any online lobby through room code, without them needing to purchase Trivia Tricks!

Inspired by games such as It Takes Two, Friend Pass will make it much easier to bring anybody into the Trivia fun, with no Remote Play necessary! Friend Pass players will be able to partake in all gameplay options, such as Co-Op Vs Boss or even Workshop Questions!

We’ll have more information on Friend Pass (including a release date) soon, but for now consider joining the Trivia Tricks Discord to direct any questions to us developers. We’ll be happy to answer!

Most of the last 3 months of development has been laying the groundwork to make Friend Pass possible. This has required an update to the version of Unreal Engine used and a total rework of Trivia Tricks' network code, which is no small feat! However, we’ve taken this rework as an opportunity to add many user-requested features and, because almost everything has improved, we're going to breakdown these changes by feature.

The Studio Stage was the first stage we made and after two-and-a-half years it didn't quite feel up to the standard of the others introduced since... so we've given it a makeover! You'll find some new stage lights and an updated player stand for Tricksters to stand on.

New AI characters have been added for you to quiz against!
Please welcome Mimi, Pearl, Claudia, Cap'n, Frosty, Fox, Bethany and Sarah to Trivia Tricks!
I wonder if anyone can figure out their favorite categories?

The Twitch Integrator has been reprogrammed almost entirely from scratch, giving us the opportunity to add many player-requested features...

  • Twitch characters can now reach a majority during Chance Round Voting, meaning the game will progress without having to wait for the timer to finish. This majority is calculated from the number of active participants in previous questions.
  • The stuttering when Twitch Chat characters were added has been resolved, and, if your connection ever goes down, Twitch Chat will now attempt to reconnect to the game.
  • And, the change you've all been waiting for, the next time you collect a key from the Twitch Connection website... WILL BE THE LAST! Trivia Tricks will now refresh expired authorization tokens by itself!

We've been taking a look at how Trivia Tricks chooses its questions and investigating areas of improvement. While we’ve received praise on repeat questions being avoided we’ve heard your requests for more question variety during games, so...

  • Trivia Tricks will now more equally divide the selected categories. Picking two categories? The questions you'll see will be much closer to a 50/50 split than before. Picking 20 categories? Everything will be represented!
  • Additionally, Trivia Tricks will not ask a question from the same category more than twice in a row.
  • Finally, we've extended every category with some new, relevant-for-2023 questions. Hope you've been keeping on top of things!

We are continuing to polish Workshop integration in accordance with your feedback!

  • Only the host now needs to have question packs downloaded, meaning games will start much faster.
  • We've adjusted the metrics behind 'trending' packs, as previously selecting a pack in a lobby of 8 players would count as an 8x boost.
  • 'Friend-Only' and 'Hidden' packs can now be played with anyone, but the category menu will hide the details of those packs for players who don't have the rights to see them (being marked as a "Hidden Pack" to those players).
  • The TV will now have an icon when a Workshop question is shown.

In preparation for Friend Pass' release we've overhauled several sections of online play, here's some of the more major adjustments...

  • The 'Room Code' will be on-screen at all times in the top right corner of the screen instead of being hidden away in the pause menu. Don't worry! It still needs to be hovered to display the code.
  • Lobby searching is much more responsive and, in the case of a failed connection, Trivia Tricks will now show a helpful message and a timeout timer. Previously this was just a black screen.
  • We've removed the button to invite players, as this was causing confusion for Steam Remote Play and won't be compatible with Friend Pass. We recommend using Room Codes, which will work in all circumstances!

It doesn't stop there, here's a few other miscellaneous improvements and bug fixes available in Version 0.9.32.24!

  • The Character Creator now has a 'randomize' button, allowing you to quickly see all sorts of whacky combinations. It will randomize to your unlocked items, meaning any generated characters are ready to be saved immediately!
  • We've updated the icons in the Stage Selection menu to reflect the stages as they look today, as they were getting a little outdated with all the redesigns!
  • The Chance Round joining section has had several UI elements polished, such as the thumbs next to players and the Twitch menus.
  • The Achievements menu now works when Trivia Tricks is running without Steam. Additionally, we've fixed a bug where cosmetics tied to achievements weren't being unlocked in all circumstances.
  • Fixed a crash that would occur if players failed to load another player's avatar.
  • Fixed a rare softlock that had a chance to occur after failing to host a lobby.
  • Trivia Tricks will no longer direct players between several menus with awkward transitions after failing to join a lobby.
  • If, for whatever reason, Trivia Tricks cannot detect the monitor's information, the settings menu will now default to populating with 720/1080/1440/4k resolutions and 30/60/120/uncapped framerate options.
  • Fixed any outstanding issues where particular textures would be displayed in low quality for a second.
  • Fixed a bug where clients could see the Add/Remove AI buttons for a split second after joining a game.
  • Fixed a bug where some sub-menus in the Workshop Browse Menu wouldn't close automatically after a game begins.
  • Fixed a bug where the ‘Categories Updated!' text would stay on screen after players navigate away from the main lobby menu (such as Stage Select).
  • Fixed a bug where a player’s inventory wouldn't immediately update upon using an item.
  • Fixed an issue where shortcuts to Trivia Tricks would boot the game without a connection to Steam.
  • Pre-emptively resolved a bug where Ganymede's Lab wouldn't have loaded during future seasonal events.
  • During the development of this update Gustav picked a different color for their Bowtie. Who are we to argue?

Wow, you really read all the way down here? We'll let you in on a little secret! 👀 Open the Trivia Tricks' main menu to unlock the limited-time Lootbox and Jester Hat April Fool's cosmetics! But hurry, this giveaway ends April 6th!

🟢 🔴 Opt In or Out of Chance Round With Game Pacing Improvements! 🔴 🟢

Hello Tricksters and Happy New Year! We at 3-Tricks hope that you've had a comfortable holiday season doing whatever makes you happiest with plenty more of that in the year to come!

Today's update brings some changes to joining Chance Round to make it faster to get back to answering questions!

During the Chance Round phase you will now be prompted to join or decline at the top of the screen. Previously opting out meant waiting down the timer which could be a little awkward if nobody had the courage to risk it all. Once everyone has made their decision the timer will zip down to 0 and the Chance Round machine will immediately kick into action. Failing to make a decision will still default to not taking part - so don't fret if you can't decide in time. If you're playing with Twitch Chat then things still stay the same and they join how they have done before.

Some other changes this patch see the Workshop Categories now listed alphabetically to help with finding a certain pack to play with. You can now also use the mouse to click on your Item in your inventory to use it when playing with Keyboard and Mouse.

  • Added 'Yes' and 'No' buttons to the ‘Join Chance Round’ prompt.
  • The timer has been moved to the ‘Join Chance Round’ prompt and made larger. Before it was only present on the TV.
  • Workshop categories are now sorted in alphabetical order in the Categories Menu.
  • Keyboard and mouse players can now use items by clicking them in the inventory.
  • The clock item will no longer spawn when a Twitch player is in the lobby, as it was causing there to be not enough time for the Twitch Chat to answer.

  • Mr. Tricks will now correctly refer to himself as "Count Tricks" at Halloween, and "Elf Tricks" during the Festive season in all instances.
  • Fixed a bug where closing the Browse Workshop menu before the search finished would double the list of categories in the Categories Menu.
  • Fixed a bug where long Question Pack names would cause the Featured Workshop Packs box to shrink on the Main Menu.
  • Fixed a bug where the Browse Workshop and Featured Workshop Pack menus did not cap the number of characters for a Workshop title.
  • Fixed a bug where, after being hit by the Anvil item, answers could slide under specific UI elements.
  • Fixed a bug with the Item inventory prompt when playing with more than one type of controller.

And lastly, to everyone in the Trivia Tricks community, here’s to another year of tricky trivia!

  • Player podiums will no longer be lit during Chance Round if the player opts to not join.

  • Fixed a bug where, if Workshop categories had ever been selected and then were deselected, they would turn back on when swapping between Co-Op and Standard.

❄️Unlock Limited-Time Cosmetics in TRIVIA SNOWDOWN! ❄️ + New Chance Round Items!

Hello Tricksters! Grab a mug of hot cocoa and get under the weighted blankets, it’s Trivia Snowdown time!

From now until January 13th Trivia Tricks will be in Snowdown mode! Celebrate the season by enabling the ‘Festive’ question category, team up with your trivia pals to take on the Santa & Krampus boss, and complete limited-time Festive Missions to unlock rare cosmetics!

Plus there’s 6 new collectibles in the store waiting to be unlocked by spending cookies, earned through participating in trivia!

The festive additions continue with the Chance Round item pool being expanded with three new items!

Firstly there’s the Present, which grants 1,500 points to both yourself and another player of your choosing. Spread the festive cheer!

There’s also the Stopwatch, which halves the question timer to hurry everybody else into a panic (pairs well with the Math category).

Lastly, there’s Call a Boss, a phone which puts you in touch with a random boss who may (or may not) know the answer to the current question.

Finally, last week we asked the kind folks in the Trivia Tricks Discord what Quality of Life improvements they would like to see. Here’s some of the improvements in this update made possible thanks to your suggestions…

  • During Chance Round voting you can now explicitly opt out of joining, meaning the timer will be skipped once all players vote
  • Remembering lobby settings when swapping between standard and co-op mode
  • Easier communication to hosts about category preferences
These are just some of the headliners for the many small but important improvements you’ll find in this update. Thanks to everybody for taking the time to give us these suggestions! If you’ve got any ideas about the ways we can make Trivia Tricks better then do consider leaving a Steam Review letting us know what you think.

Now, onto the full patch notes!

  • The Trivia Snowdown event is back until January 13th!
  • The Festive category returns, how well do you know the holidays?
  • Plus, take on Santa & Krampus in Co-Op Vs Boss Mode!
  • 6 new festive cosmetics have been added that are available for purchase in the Character Creator using cookies, earned by participating in trivia!
  • This is in addition to the 15 festive cosmetics from last year, which are also available again!

  • The first new item, the Present, will treat yourself and another player of your choosing to 1,500 points!
  • The second new item, The Stopwatch, will halve the remaining time on the question timer - use this to reduce the amount of time other players have to think!
  • The third new item, Call a Boss, will call up a random boss for a hint about the current question! Bosses will happily tell you the correct answer if they know it, but they don’t know everything so they will sometimes have to guess or only be able to narrow down the possibilities.
  • Call a Boss will only spawn in lobbies where each player is the only one playing on their device, while the Stopwatch and Present will spawn in any lobby.

  • Players can now opt to NOT participate in the Chance Round by pressing the B button on a gamepad, or backspace on a keyboard.
  • When all players have voted ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to joining Chance Round, the timer will immediately end.
  • Players can now join the Chance Round via mouse. Left clicking on the top banner will join, while right clicking it will opt to skip.
  • The AI players will also vote no if they aren’t partaking.
  • The longest that the AI can take to vote has been reduced from 8 seconds to 5 seconds.
  • Some pauses have been removed or reduced during the Chance Round to speed up general game flow.

  • Clients can now interact with categories in the Categories Menu, sending a message to the host that they want this category to be turned on or off!
  • The chat is now visible in the Categories Menu when playing online.
  • If the host swaps the game mode that is being played (such as changing from Standard to Vs Boss), their previous settings and categories are saved and will be restored if the host swaps back. This will reduce cases of players accidentally resetting their lobby settings.
  • The "Updated!" text that appears over the Categories button now appears when the selected categories are different from when the player last viewed them.
  • The "Settings" header button in the lobby has been renamed to "Boss" when Vs Boss Mode is active to make it clearer that the Boss can be changed in this menu.
  • Negative’s order in the Vs Boss list has been moved to help new players experience a greater variety of bosses when the list is played in order.
  • Players can now ready/unready faster in the lobby, and the game will start quicker when all players have readied up.

  • Menu animations have generally been sped up to improve game flow.
  • Seasonal events such as Halloween, Summer and Christmas will now load the desired Waiting Room on the Main Menu automatically. This means future seasonal events will automatically begin and end without further patches being required.
  • The Voodoo Doll curse was a little overpowered, so we’ve nerfed it a little bit. Players now gain 25% less points when inflicted with a curse instead of 50%.
  • Some new menu transitions have been added, such as when moving to the Character Creator from the Main Menu and back.
  • If Twitch doesn’t answer when playing with Twitch in Vs Boss Mode, the boss will not consider the Twitch player when calculating the amount of points the boss should receive.
  • Players now have more time to answer questions when playing against Santa & Krampus, in line with the other bosses.
  • Addressing the feedback we received last-year, Santa & Krampus’ chance round has been sped up.
  • Several space optimizations have been implemented, reducing the install size of Trivia Tricks.
  • Several CPU optimizations have been implemented, improving performance when many characters are on-screen at once.
  • Several GPU optimizations have been implemented, improving performance in the Main Menu on lower-spec machines.

  • Fixed some typos and cleaned up the wording on a variety of questions. Thanks to all of you who took the time to report these to us directly!
  • Updated several questions to be accurate following developments in the modern day.
  • Added even more questions across all categories, many suggested by the Discord community! Thank you to everyone who has suggested questions so far!

  • Fixed a bug where AI question answering accuracy wasn't being properly reduced when items were used against them.
  • Fixed an exploit in Vs Boss Mode where the human team could increase their score by adding new players during the final round. The Boss will now gain the same number of points that the human team does when a human player joins.
  • Fixed a bug where players could join lobbies that did not match their current seasonal event.
  • Fixed a memory leak when the Magnet item was used.
  • Fixed the chat not touching the bottom of the screen.
  • Fixed the Twitch button flying across the screen when everyone readied up in the lobby.
  • Fixed a bug where some buttons wouldn’t always register being clicked on first try.
  • Fixed a bug in the lobby where no sound played when hovering over AI avatars.

Like what we’re doing? Hit the thumbs up below this news post! And to everyone in the Trivia Tricks community, happy holidays!
