New Features

- Added the Spirit Branch, a reusable spell casting wand that can help caster builds if they run out of spells, can be found as random treasure in the Labyrinth in Chapter 2 and beyond
- The December Seasonal outfit has been added to the game(inspired by A Christmas Carol), and can be found in the filthy bag in the East Stairwell until Dec. 29.

Balance Changes

- Enchanted Armor/Dolls are now limited to a maximum of 3 at any time, and the one with the least health(or oldest if they all have the same health) will disenchant upon enchanting a fourth
- The Masoleum puzzle at the end of Chapter 1 has been made clearer
- Enemies no longer try to attack Possessed Books
- Warding Candles now proc once per second again to avoid Curse Rot flipping, but still retain their accelerating healing behavior from previous versions
- Labyrinth spear traps have a longer reset time

Polish

- All items appear under sub categories in the inventory menu now, such as "Melee Rings" or "Projectiles", to better help you find items
- All previous seasonal outfits are now for sale all of the time by Tomos in Chapter 2 and beyond, instead of only one being available at a time
- Removed a public domain 1909 song from Chapter 4 which was causing an illegitimate content ID claim for VODs of the game on YouTube (sigh)
- Small audio/visual fixes for: Black Book spell(cast sound), First Witch(clipping on knife in cinematic), Basement East Stairwell(secret passage visible in doorway), Rotted Initiates(added footsteps), Worshippers(added footsteps)

Bug Fixes

- Fix an instance where enemies could be "double spawned" upon loading back in
- Fix a case where using a Spirit Twig under some conditions could result in being permanently invisible to enemies
- Fix Mr. Coffins being inaccessible in Chapter 2 if you did not engage with him in Chapter 1
- Fix Enchanted Armors being able to attack enemies, such as the Old King, during cinematics
- Fix cases in the basement and attic where a ? would appear on the map despite no treasure remaining
- Fix extra invisible stairs appearing on the map of the Wrong Room
- Fix strange behavior of watchers outside the attic in Chapter 2 when hiding
- Fix corpses blocking projectiles
- Fix Puzzle Chests reopening upon entering a room

Balance Changes

- Inner Light, which affects the brightness around the player without a lantern, is much more effective now

- Upper Initiates only cast a single Spear spell now instead of double
- Cursed Vases and Stalactites no longer do poise damage
- Some monsters, particularly in Chapter 1, have been given even more "first attacker" advantage to the player

- Added the Rogue's Ring, which deals additional melee damage when enemies are facing away from you - can be found in Chapter 1 and beyond
- Added the Cursed Balance Ring, which helps you maintain a high level of cursedness without going too far - can be found in Chapter 3 and beyond

Balance Changes

- Your lost gold from previous nights is now distributed among the chests that only appear when cursed
- Rolling now makes noise, equivalent to a running footstep
- AI has been improved to avoid "clustering" attacks - similar attacks(such as close range melee attacks) share stamina pools now, so in many cases you can no longer fall victim to an unlucky cluster of attacks
- AI stamina/cooldowns are mostly reset upon first seeing the player now, which should give more "first attacker" advantage to the player
- Leveling "Weirdness" now reduces the Spell Toll in addition to increasing Spell Damage
- Annihilation Spell now reduces your health to 10% upon activation
- Eclipse Ring now blocks 90% of Curse Rot damage, instead of 100%
- Burning Protection lasts 8 seconds now instead of 5
- Paralysis status effect lasts 30% longer
- Many NG+ items that were not permanent are permanent now
- The NG+ quest has been restructured so that after summoning the NG+ boss, you can still use the NG+ NPCs

Polish

- Fixed Seed Mode(unlocked after beating the game) works more consistently now - additionally you can see the current night's seed and explicitly enter a new seed
- Significant optimizations to outdoor scenes with trees - those that ran at 40fps on Steam Deck now hit 60
- Gold Discovery and Spell Toll stats have been added to the Stats display in the menu
- Entering/leaving doors is smoother, and Nightingale will start walking in the direction held on her way out of a door
- Hiding/unhiding motions are smoother
- When recovering items from cursed chests, a new message appears indicating their source

Bug Fixes

- Fixed issues with the Ascended and Arena Novice achievements not awarding - these should unlock automatically upon resuming a save where you fulfilled their requirements
- Fixed issue with the Action Shot achievement not awarding - you will need to complete the requirement for this achievement(take a picture with 5 or more subjects) again
- Fix Graverider not appearing in NG+
- Fixed an issue where some bosses would be in their idle pose after being defeated and saving/loading
- Fixed issues where Melee weapon descriptions could flow off the screen with enough extra effects
- Fix issue where some ring effects, such as the Castle Ring or Curse Ward Ring, were not reflected on the Stats screen
- Fix a few instances of Corpse Hex leaving odd floating goop
- Fix an instance where enemies/allies would continue to attack dead targets
- Fixed issues where Enchanted Armor would do a poor job of following the player, and couldn't follow them through elevators

- New timed event item: You can pick up the Doll Outfit by opening the filthy sack in the East Stairwell on any chapter until Dec. 4
- The Sickle melee weapon, which deals significant poison damage, has been added to the game, and can be found in Chapter 2 and beyond

Balance Changes

- Poise now recovers after 5 seconds across the player and all enemies
- Regular enemies with the sigil beneath them in the Labyrinth now drop ancient blood
- Old Sword durability is now only affected by physical damage dealt
- Dodges are no longer interrupted unless poise is actually broken
- Touching a ghost with the Bible will now alert them to your presence
- Knife, Rapier, and Axe damage slightly increased
- Pipe heavy attack made slightly slower
- The Old King boss has a much longer cooldown on spells
- Enchanted Armor does slightly less physical/bleed damage, and much less poise damage

- Fixed an issue where the map would stop updating and NPCs would stop spawning under certain circumstances
- Fixed being unable to properly use the Options menu from the Title menu with a controller and related issues
- Fixed several softlocks around entering/leaving rooms while interacting
- Fix issues where Nightingale would sometimes turn away at odd times in melee combat
- Fixed an issue where being grabbed could result in teleporting across the room to a previously chosen hiding spot

- Fixed an issue where using the Bible while turning or being hit by a ghost could result in erratic movement

v0.88

Note: Many doors were not properly locked in 0.87. This has been fixed. If you managed to reach somewhere in the previous version without a key and are now stuck, you can now choose Options -> Support -> Start New Night to reset with the mansion without losing any items. Please reach out to Support if you have any problems - we can fix saves if need be.

New Features

Melee combat has been significantly overhauled:


  • Hold the attack button for a heavy attack
  • Press the attack button repeatedly for a brief combo
  • Attacks now push combatants apart
  • Input buffering has been rewritten to feel better
  • The damage and animations of all weapons have been significantly rebalanced
  • Dodge back no longer scales distance with Speed
  • A new weapon - the Cleaver - has been added, and is now the initial tutorial weapon

Feedback is welcome, as this is a sizeable change in the feel of the game. If a weapon you loved you now hate, or you feel like you're struggling with the new system, please get in touch!

Samhain Outfit

From Oct. 28th to Nov. 3rd, you can find the Samhain Outfit in the filthy bag of the East Stairwell. You must be on v0.86 of the game.

New Features

- A seasonal outfit(the Samhain Outfit) is now available until November 3rd - just open the filthy bag in the East Stairwell in any chapter
- The Golden Spear melee weapon has been added, and can be found as a random drop in the Byzantine Labyrinth
- Through asset optimization, the size of the game has been reduced by half - down to 4.1gb
- A new "quick item found display" feature has been added - items you've found already no longer pause the game and instead appear in a stack on the right side of the HUD. Experienced players can enable this for all items(not just ones you've already found) in the Gameplay Options. Note that until you've picked up an item in 0.86, it will still be considered new.

Balance Changes

- Reduced the speed penalty of poison from 25 to 15
- Nightingale enters/exits crouch faster
- Exquisite Gold Ring heals cursedness more slowly, and stops working when suffering from Curse Rot
- Recall Shrines can no longer be activated when suffering from a negative status effect or below 50% health
- Tomos sells the Initiate Grimoire in Chapter 3 and beyond
- Ghostly Ring no longer makes you invulnerable during dodges when suffering from Curse Rot

Polish

- Exiting rooms now has input buffering, and Nightingale can exit a room immediately after opening a door
- Armor Outfit is now gold, to better fit its origin

- Fix NG+ monsters spawning in the basement of Chapter 1 and attic of Chapter 3 during regular NG
- Fix the flamethrower not doing damage as intended
- Fix Nightingale being able to walk or run more slowly than intended with a controller
